The Good, The Bad & The Ugly - Change in Game Design

In this video, I talk about change in Game Design and why it often isn't as simple as we as a community like to make it. Changes and choices in game design have both good and bad consequences - usually relegated to a particular type of player or psychographic profile.
I explore these changes as they have happened in other games and how it relates to Age of Sigmar and Warhammer.

Applying the theory of psychographic profile as it applies to Candyland my belief is the change to the last square ruins existing value of the game. Some games are used to teach children life skills which if not discussed with them after the game is an opportunity lost. The difficulty of conquering the last square teaches patience, that finishing is the hardest part of any challenge, that life is not fair, that if you are not careful competition can pass you by and that sometimes it helps to be lucky. These are challenging concepts to teach children that games can make easier. Making the game easier at the end destroyed value the original designer gave it....and turned it into a simple race. Change can be very, very bad. Thanks for the insight! Please consider an episode on life skills roleplaying can teach everyone from a game designer's perspective. I have found such games to be the most valuable of all.

Jeffery Schutt Yep, and as I pointed out, this is one of the LEAST controversial changes in a game's design from most involved. I think your point is very well taken and it shows that even in what is often perceived by a wide audience as a positive change, there are always dark sides to the change, necessary consequences that can change something fundamental about the experience of the game. That is a weighty topic you have for me there, but I have added it to my list as I am always looking for great ideas!

Vince Venturella A lot of good points. This is very informative for all of us game designers working on games (like myself) out here. I will take this advice into account with my work on Twilight Era.

Awesome! Human evaluation is a tricky business and you're right that for every good there is a bad. Indeed, every "yes" to something can be also be stated reversely as a "no" to the alternative and vice versa. I've been thinking about that topic recently. On a less serious note check out the changes in art on the Candy Land board! Dare I say progression or regression? My wife informed me that we own a copy of the game for her pediatric therapy. Apparently she plays it often at work haha. As always keep up the good work!

When people have invested in a market and they have found all the loop holes they don't like it when the regulations change. Suddenly the pecking order is turned on its head and the old tricks don't work. New players rise and the old order is cast down. When a market has significant barriers to entry people don't enter the market. Wargamers don't like randomness because you can't meta your way out of it so people consider randomness just luck and not skill. This is ironic when playing a dice or card based game. When 8th came out there was much anger about random charge distances. suddenly the ability to judge 16.5 inches was about as much use as the ability to make a barrel, downgraded from a critical skill to consigned to a museum. Hail Caesar, written by Rick Priestly, is essentially warmaster rewritten as an ancient wargame, it has spawned a number of other supplements including a scifi game Future war commander. Those games don't feature points values mostly because Risk didn't believe in them. Any significant change to the warhammer rules was always going to be met with fear and loathing from the conservative part of the community.

john tailby All good points as always sir. I would argue though that in your first example, the bigger players are the ones more easily able to absorb the impact of change. Here is a simple example by way of a long analogy. So here in the states, vaping is taking off and smoking is dropping like a rock. Now vaping is relatively unregulated and of course people are pushing to change that. Who is leading that charge? The big tobacco companies of course. You might say, well yes, but they have the most to lose, they sell tobacco, not vape stuff. That was true, however, most of the larger ecig companies are now owned by tobacco companies. Essentially, they are looking to regulate themselves because they know 1) they can make the regulations most favorable to them and 2) they have money to absorb the change, i.e. they have large compliance departments that can make sure they are compliant while smaller people just can't afford to be compliant (which speaks to your second point). To bring this back around to our current meta and warhammer. In the past, those players or groups at the top have classically been able to absorb the changes (which 6-7-8 weren't really large) and were able to remain the dominant players or groups. The current change is massive and favors a completely different playstyle - meaning there is no guarantee they would remain the dominant player. There is also probably a second layer there of analogy to the 9th Age. The Swedish/ETC alliance is undoubtedly constructing a game they would find favorable, i.e. that suits their playstyle and strategies, which would allow them to remain dominant. All of that is meant in a friendly fashion, everyone is acting in their own self-interest and I understand. My sincere hope is that at the end of all this we have two strong, thriving games that appeal to different psychographic profiles and allow more people to play and enjoy warhammer in the style they favor.

The argument reminds me of the discussion around new fuels for cars. The existing industry is heavily invested in maintaining the status quo. A new radical shift to hydrogen in stead of petrol would be treated with massed fear and loathing from the existing industry. Even if the new plan is better for the environment people will still lobby the government with all sorts of irrational arguments.

john tailby Yes, there is very much a situation of the status quo often has a vested interest in that status quo instead of shifting to a new option, even if it's better. (certainly not a direct correlation to WHFB8 vs. AoS, but it has echoes).

I love these vids, thanks for doing them Vince. Have you played any DnD 5th? how did you find it? compared to previous editions. Do you like that changes? My group have been enjoying it, 2 of our party are new to roleplay and dnd.

kye baker I love D&D 5e, I think it's probably the best overall edition of D&D that has been created. There are things I love about every single edition, as they all brought interesting ideas to the table. Overall, I think it's solid because it did the best of synnergizing the best of all the previous editions while still creating it's own voice. As an aside, next time you play the game, open the PHB and go to the second page with the credits and look closely at the last paragraph - you may see the reason I am biased ;)

In all fairness, Jeff is one of the greatest RPG authors of all time and has given us so much (we often forget he was integral to Dragonlance) - to be counted in a group with his name is beyond an honor

Apologies, I did not mean to be little Jeff's work or achievements. My coment was made in ignorance, an attempt at humour. Though It has got me thinking, as a player I am unaware of who the authors and game designers are of the games I play. Until you directed me to it it I had never even glanced at page 2 of the phb. I am curious now, what games have you Vince written/consulted?
@VinceVenturella

kye baker I took your comments as light hearted and was just adding to them ;) I have worked on 3 editions of D&D and published 6 of my own games, I have been doing this for a little more than 10 years, but of course, I am still a baby compared to many in the industry.
