Octavian Grant is the living embodiment of "The only way to win the game is not to play"

He was a genius in that regard. He took one look at what was going on after Sidious died and said “nope. Grant out.”

Interesting that he was one of the few high ranking imperials to see the writing on the wall and just leave.

Id ask you to cover the droid that thought it was Anakin Solo, but that would be like a minute long video. Also great stuff, your videos often paint the picture of the Essential Guides and Sourcebooks really well.

Grant is an interesting character who, while being a racist bigot, he wasn't a loyal fascist Imperial. Nor was he a megalomaniac or, from what I know anyway, didn't directly carry out any atrocities. I like the idea that he may have come out of retirement during the Vong war. Even though that's not canon, I'm going to choose it as part of my own head canon, since we'll never know otherwise anyway. I think him fighting in the Vong war would make sense with his self serving, go with the flow attitude that it seems like he had. When it was to his benefit, he served the Empire, then when the NR became more dominant, he switched sides. Knowing his dislike of non-humans, I could easily see him outraged by the Vong enslavement of humans. Therefor I think it fits that he'd have fought. Though it might not have been until the election of Cal Omas that he might have been allowed to serve. Fey'lya and his faction would never have forgiven him for his past allegiance. But Omas was far more pragmatic.

I almost wonder if he might not have taken advantage of the chaos during or immediately after the Vong war to finally make a play for power.

@@trekker105 I doubt it. If he wasn't interested beforehand, then I doubt he would have been by that point. I don't think it's impossible, just less likely.

He easily could’ve been the commander or general of the local planetary PDF sort of like Jace in Thyferra. And if he stayed alive, he might have even fought with Fondor

Octavian Grant's exile planet being the same as the one Han and Leia went on vacation on is weird. But having ti also be the home base of Kaerobani the pirate lord with an Interdictor d from Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith despite Grant being there under watch of Jan Ors is really weird. (And it's around the same time since MotS starts in early Shadow Hand and the Mara levels are between the end of Dark Empire 2 and possibly around the same time as the Jedi Academy Trilogy and I, Jedi.

I think this guy might be my favorite of the twelve mostly on the strength of his name being one that would make sense IRL also it would sound fucking transcendentally delicious in a Core accent. Grahnd Admiral Octavian Grahnt *chef's kiss*

I love the name for the two people in history it's referring to, Octavian the first emperor of Rome and general Ulysses S. Grant. But a nonpolitical combination of the two

@@tuskinradar8688 Not the person you were talking to, but. I personally find Yang more agreeable, but his devotion to doing the right thing is both, his greatest strength, and his greatest weakness. I'm more on the Machiavelli side of the discussion, in the end, the results are all that matters, if one's devotion to democracy causes its downfall, one could argue that that is evil, in and of itself. Though the FPA was already so corrupted that Reinhard's New Empire would probably be preferable, in the short term at least, and maybe even in the long term if Hildegard were to establish the constitution. Reinhard is also great, though his pride causes a lot of deaths, that doesn't diminish his character, just enhances it, as any good flaw does. I can't really decide between the 2, though Oberstein and Reuenthal are my favourite characters from the series.
@tuskinradar8688

@@MrWheelman82 honestly its such a hard decision, half the time I find myself praising Reinhard just because Yang is so great someone needs to be in the other corner just to balance things out. Your description of them both is spot on, and In an eventual rewatch odds are ill find greater appreciation for Oberstein and Reuental, because while I definitely appreciated them, in the blur of my first great binge I dont think I committed enough of them to memory, even as much as I did.
@MrWheelman82
@MrWheelman82 3 жыл бұрын
@@tuskinradar8688 I only watched through it twice, but I intentionally limit myself to 3 episodes a day at maximum, it gives me enough time to commit stuff to memory. LotGH is my favourite anime, and possibly even my favourite piece of fiction. It also introduced me to my now favourite composer as well, Gustav Mahler, I've tried a couple of time to watch Die Neue These, but without Mahler and the other classical music used, it just feels like missed opportunity everywhere. So I'll stick with the 1988 OVA. There are a lot of good characters in the anime, very few characters fall flat, even though I do agree with people that the Terraists are a bit, one dimensional, so to speak, such terrorists and people do exist in real life, so I can accept them being this way.

The way how Kaine got lured into this trap and ruthlessly shot down by an E-Wing while being in an unarmed shuttle must be the greatest excample of cowardice the NR ever displayed.

I like to imagine that Grant did come out of retirement during the Vong War and helped Garm Bel's faction that was based in the Tapani Sector. Then I imagine he was assassinated by the GAG sometime before the Second Galactic Civil War in order to prevent him from joining the Confederation.

A while back, Mr. Takei was hinting on Facebook that he would like to cross franchises and appear in the Sequel Trilogy. I suggested that the Story Group bring back Grant and have Takei play an older version of the character, so we're on the same wavelength there. For whatever reason, it never came to pass, but there we are. It would have been nice to see some Old Imperials amongst the grand coalition that shows up at the endgame....
