Last summer, we got to spend one of the best weeks of our lives with our dear friend & mentor, Jim Kovaleski at his summer abode just outside Eastport, Maine.

This grass, or hay, has proven it's worth over & over each year for Jim. The proof this year was in spite of a drought, with no access to water - he was still able to produce an abundance of produce & he owes his prize-winning onions & other veggies to this grass-fed soil fertility. I’m 23, I just want to grow food and build stuff. I don’t care about money or other materialistic things, I just want to be a productive blessing to God and His servants. Currently working on a farm for a living, my big goal is to have a wife and children on a self-sufficient farm living a wholesome and simple life.

Wonderful teacher I'm from Africa and I never heard of growing things on only grass what an intelligent man and how all Humans can just feed each other with less work, American people are always smart people. And it looks he is having fun working with grass Gardening.

u can also incorporate leaves which are even more nutritious than grass, what u have in abundance close to u, use that as long as it's chemical free and decomposes in a couple months time

Love this kinda logic. Adaptive farming! My grandfather persevered through drought, with livestock, by not just providing pasture. He kept his weeds, in the ground-covers and the shrubs too. He kept his trees in hedgerows as fodder for his cattle. He always brought healthy cattle to market, no matter what the weather was doing. When the logic to farming is only maximising yields - guess what's the first thing to suffer in a drought? So thanks for sharing Jim's approach, Pete. We need more of it.

peace and love It's the minerals weeds were able to draw up, that the grass couldn't. This was before minerals became an industrial product, so all farmers knew to keep an array of weeds in the pasture. It was more common for a farmer to be disconcerted he didn't have enough weeds for his animals, than becoming disconcerted he had too many! Weeds guaranteed fat and healthy ruminants. In Australia, our soils are really poor and have periodic climate periods of drought too, so it's even more important to keep weeds for animals. Because some weed roots, go down deeper, meaning they'll be able to be grazed, after the grass has died. Coupled with his hedgerows, this is how he was able to get fat cattle to auction, in a drought, when everyone else's animals looked poorly. Grass is what my grandfather fed his cattle in the good years. Weeds were there for the animals to mineralise themselves. But in the bad years, he had weeds and hedgerows as backup. He couldn't fathom why farmers only wanted fields of pasture. It was like waiting for the bomb to go off, and ruin the farmer.

I learn something: Accept it when some plants don't make it. The earth is resilient - my whims and desires take a backseat in the grand cycle of life. Wow a heavy lesson learnt this morning. I have to replay this video again. A lot is being shared in this clip.

I am doing similar things in my small backyard garden, putting all mowed grass from our own lawn (so no harmful chemicals for sure ) to the garden and all leaves too (fall leaves first go through chicken run then into garden in winter). I started preparing the soil last fall. This is my first year of planting and I have a lot of harvest. Also made some videos to record the harvests. So happy!

I truly believe in this method of gardening and I’m putting it into practice. I’m growing amounts the grass and weeds and recycling (chop & drop) whatever I cut or pull. May not be the prettiest. My garden & videos will focus on growing weeds. Lol. because they grown themselves in all our garden whether we want them or not. 👍🏾

@@thisguy333 Are you joking? If worms crawl in and love news paper and eat it then there is no harmful criminals or glue. Worms are very sensitive to any chemical and would not live in it if it was poison.

Started my mulched garden halfway through this season.Went through a drought, was very pleased at how the grass mulch held the weeds back and kept the moisture in the soil , so simple I'm also looking to start a market garden , can't wait

This is an incredible concept to me! I had heard that metals in city water accumulate and do not wash away if used on a garden basically ruining the soil, I was crushed. I can't wait to start :)
