Gerald Norman "Jerry" Springer (born February 13, 1944) is a television presenter, best known as host of the tabloid talk show The Jerry Springer Show since its debut in 1991. He is a former Democratic mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio, a former newsreader and a musician.
In 1970, Springer ran for Congress. He failed to unseat incumbent Republican Donald D. Clancy, but garnered 45% of the vote. He had previously spearheaded the effort to lower the voting age, including testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of ratification of the 26th Amendment.
Springer was elected to the Cincinnati city council in 1971. He considered resigning in 1974 after admitting to hiring a prostitute. The episode was uncovered when a police raid on a Fort Wright, Kentucky "massage parlor" unearthed a check Springer had written for its "services". Springer came clean at a press conference. His honesty helped him win back his seat in 1975. In 1977, he was chosen to serve one year as mayor by the City Council.
In 1982, Springer sought the Democratic nomination for governor of Ohio. TV commercials for Springer's campaign referenced his use of a check to pay a prostitute, saying that he wasn't afraid of the truth "even if it hurts". He failed to win the Democratic party's nomination, and his political career was put on hold. Springer considered running for the United States Senate in 2003, but backed down due to negative affiliations with The Jerry Springer Show.
Springer's broadcast career started while he was still mayor of Cincinnati, with album-oriented rock radio station WEBN FM, which was noted for its laid-back and irreverent radio format. The station featured commentaries by Springer under the banner "The Springer Memorandum." The popularity of these commentaries helped launch his broadcasting career.
Springer was hired as a political reporter and commentator on Cincinnati's NBC affiliate, WLWT TV, which had, at the time, the lowest-rated news program. Later, having been named primary news anchor and Managing Editor, he needed a broadcast "catch phrase" in the model of other great newsmen. With the help of some others at WLWT, he created his signature line: "Take care of yourself, and each other." Within two years he was Cincinnati's number one news anchor, along with partner Norma Rashid, and for five years, the most popular one in the city, garnering ten local Emmy Awards for his nightly commentaries. It was a position he held until January 1993.
Springer's commentaries on WLWT were frequently satirized by Cincinnati radio personality Gary Burbank.
In 1997, the Chicago-based NBC-owned station WMAQ hired Springer to serve as a news commentator. However, this proved to be unpopular among viewers, as it resulted in the resignation of Ron Magers and long-time news anchor Carol Marin. After performing only two commentaries, Springer resigned as commentator.
The Jerry Springer Show debuted on September 30, 1991. It was developed by WLWT-TV to replace its Phil Donahue Show (coincidentally, the style that Springer was in was similar to Phil Donahue, and both were produced by Multimedia Entertainment). It started as a politically-oriented talk show, a longer version of Springer's commentaries. Guests included Oliver North and Jesse Jackson, and topics included homelessness and gun politics. Springer was best known for hosting the sometimes controversial tabloid talk show Jerry Springer from 1991 to 2018.
Springer died at his home in Evanston, Illinois, on April 27, 2023, at the age of 79.[49][104] A family spokesperson said that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months prior to his death. Jerry Springer’s grave is at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, Illinois.

I met Jerry 4 years ago me and my sister. No lie he was walking downtown in downtown Baltimore city just walking he came out of the hotel when I spotted him and started walking down the street . I pulled up and My crazy sister started yelling “JERRY!” 😂He ignored tf out of her so she said Jerry I know you hear me calling you! 🤣 again ignored tf out of her so she got out the car and followed him he tried to hide in the Dunkin’ Donuts when he thought he was clear he came out and she started walking behind him then said excuse sir that’s when he turned around and said yes 😂 she said you Jerry right? He said yes she says I didn’t want to blow your cover (she already did by yelling Jerry ) she said let me get a pic he said ok ,she took the pic but my sister was high off weed so her lips was dry she lick her lips and said oh no we gotta do another one 😂 Jerry said ok but hurry up he let her get another pic . Jerry was awesome and extremely smart that’s why I said forget it she scaring him away and stayed in the car . I used to not be a fan, but after I saw him on "Who Do You Think You Are",it changed my opinion of him. His parents left Germany to get away from Hitler. Their parents all stayed Germany, and he lost both of his grandmothers in the Holocaust. He was led to a memorial with rte names of those taken away. He was far away in the camera shot but you could hear him crying.

I remember reading that Jerry himself was born in an underground Tube Station in London in 1944, where people were taking refuge during Nazi bombings. His parents, along with so many others escaping the Holocaust and every day Londoners sought shelter from the war planes in the tube stations. How fitting that his later career was to lead him BACK to pure chaos and bedlam. THANKS SCOTTY for your grunt work. All us Tapeheads out here appreciate you and your efforts!

Very smart man in a way. He knew where the money was and he gave his audiences what they wanted. Same silliness still thrives today with all these horrific "reality" shows.Beautiful cemetery and plot. Very peaceful. Thanx for sharing his story and his grave sight. Excellent job, Scott. The first season of the Jerry Springer Show was filmed here in Cincinnati, and covered local serious issues, like a Phil Donahue show back in the day. I think it was filmed at WLWT's studio, where he was a news anchor. Then he moved the show to Chicago and turned the show into a Howard Stern daytime show, and his ratings boomed. I can happily say, my friends and I saw The Ringmaster in the movie theater. I got to meet him back around 2001 when I worked in television. Super nice guy. He died on my birthday.

I Just loved his show, watched it all the time while growing up & I was home from school sick or something. I remember one day my mom caught me & my oldest daughter watching it when she was 11 months old & I got chewed for that by her lol. So I just reminded her that my dad introduced it too me at a young age as well by the way she wouldn’t remember it lol. Than right before my 21st birthday I told my mom that I was gonna attend a show in the audience for my birthday & she goes, ok just as long as you don’t bring home beads lol🤣🤣🤣 He sure will be missed.

I saw Jerry a little over a year ago in a restaurant along the river in Cincinnati. I was walking through the restaurant on the way back to my table, and as I passed one of the tables I saw Jerry having dinner with another gentleman. When I got back to my table I said to my friend, "I think I just saw Jerry Springer!". A little while later my friend excused himself from the table, then upon his return he said, "that IS Jerry Springer!". We both had a good chuckle out of that! Consequently I was shocked when I heard about his passing this year just because of the fact that he looked perfectly healthy only a few months before. It was soo much fun to watch them get into it.” I said, “I used to watch it and laugh. Jerry had some good come backs.

thanks for doing this vlog about jerry springer, he was a very amazing person, as he did so much in his life, the jerry springer show I used to watch when I was home from work and my friends just thought it was the most funniest thing on TV at that time, whether it was fake or not it was funny to watch all these people with issues. RIP Jerry.

I only saw Jerry on America's Got Talent as the host. He seemed like such a nice guy. Didn't know he passed until this year.

Jerry’s show was iconic and they’ll never be another one like him. I stopped watching his show years ago because I didn’t like the way it exploded black people but still respect. The show was filmed in Chicago during it’s peak in the mid to late nineties and the city was six hours from where I live in Minneapolis before it moved to Connecticut in later years until it ended. Rest in peace, Jerry. 🙏🏾🕊️

I don´t know about him. He earned money by making people embarrass themselves in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers, that´s especially horrific cause they would actively choose and look for low IQ people they could manipulate. He (and his success) is one of the main reasons why trash TV has become such a controversial thing in Germany.

I loved the episode I Want To Pose Nude. Springer had a photographer from Penthouse take pictures of this girl live in front of the audience! She held nothing back!😮

I was sitting at home one day, watching the Jerry Springer Show........and as I was watching I noticed my neighbor who lived in the apartment upstairs from mine was a guest on the show. Her girfriend was cheating with her cousin in a lesbian love triangle. It was fake of course. She told me how they fabricted the story and how the show's producers encouraged them to fight on stage. They even gave her a commercial - free orange colored VHS of the show which she asked me did i want to watch. She passed away a few years ago from an accidental fentanyl overdose and I always think about her on the show.

I was on Springer in 2013 Its fake everything people say is true but the ppl you take with you (my husband and friend) did not do what they were accused of. For example All the "dirt" my husband supposedly did was 💩 he had done 10-15 yrs before I ever met him, but he did not do any of it with Appril We got paid about 3000 just between my husband And I. The episode is called basement bootie calls I can't find it but if anyone does please lmk I'm Brandye (wearing a green top) we were the 2nd guests. By the way the reason you don't know if it's real or not is bc you practice a script for 2 days the drill you have you rehearse all day and literally 10 minutes before going in front of the camera you find out everything you've practiced has been flipped on you... And also you're not allowed to be with that third person (the bad one) you bring the entire time you're there so they'll take that person out and show em around town and party with them and they just left me & my husband and it was in a shady neighborhood so of course it causes animosity between you and your friend you flew there with. I did it for the $$ if bought back to school supplies shoes and clothes Hell you only live once! I still have my t-shirt and my beads and I didn't even have to show my ta tas lol He was a super nice guy rest in Peace Jerry
