This video has been updated in a later version to reflect the controversy surrounding the quads in Nathan Chen’s 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic routine.
17-year-old Nathan Chen is on the verge of becoming the world figure skating champion. We break down the gravity-defying physics behind his record-breaking moves.
Nathan Chen is on the verge of becoming the best figure skater alive. But the stresses on the 17-year-old American aren't just psychological. Chen is known for doing more quadruple jumps in a single program than any other figure skater in the world. But the moves are incredibly taxing on the human body. These are the physics behind figure skating's most difficult jump.

He's 18 now, he's now a 2 time national champion and grand prix final champion. He has won gold at every single competition he's been to this season but he might not win gold at the olympics as his most major competitors (Shoma Uno, Yuzuru Hanyu and Boyang Jin for the most part) have been injured, withdrawn or inconsistent at all the competitions he's faced them at this season, all of those competitors have similar technical content with better presentation skills (eons better in the cases of Yuzuru and Shoma, just a smidge better in Boyang's case) which do make up approximately half the total score in skating. Shoma and Boyang are on a perfect path to peak at the olys now and Yuzuru Hanyu, though seriously injured, has pulled world records out of nowhere before, in fact, Yuzuru is determined to land a quad axel before his career is over. We are currently witnessing a renaissance of quads in mens skating and even 13 year old girls are starting to attempt quad salchows and toeloops. It's a great time to become a skate fan!!

Nathan's Salchow is so impressive to me because he uses the one-footed take-off. It's amazing. Majority of skaters do it using the toe-loop(two-footed) take-off. His 4Lz and 4F are also really impressive, and his jumps have only gotten better and better as he's become more experienced with age.

On the long run we all probably need hip replacements by 30 But it does take a toll. The impact is quite harsh, remember we land on outside or inside edge meaning we are leaning just a bit to our left or right without actually falling. And also, most jumps are made in the first half of a program? Which leaves the second half and you are feeling out of breath and ready to drop dead. Some skaters will do the jumps on the second half and get even more points. I only attempted that once at a competition and sure I got more marks but oh boy did my lungs feel tight. And let’s take into account that our skates arE SUPER important. Look at Chen’s blades even, they are different from the more traditional ones. And they are built with that support to aid his jumps. Sometimes if the skate is poorly fitted, the blood circulation gets funky and you get that feeling of needles pricking your skin. If you are bad with the cold and how wet the skates might get that also makes for it to be uncomfortable

RaymondHng if you skate you're taught how to do salchows before you learn toe loop, the technique for a toe loop is harder than a salchow, but I'm surprised as to why a triple salchow has a higher base value than a triple toe loop🤔

@koda1082
@koda1082 7 жыл бұрын
No_Quads_ And_Axels Look how the figure skater takes off. If the skater does a 360° turn before taking off with the edges of the blades, then it's a salchow jump. If the skater bends their legs before taking off with the edges of their blades, then it's a loop jump. There is the toe jump, which takes off at the toe pick. As for the flip jump and Lutz jump, look at the edge of the blade. If the skater takes off from a slight inside esge, then it's a flip jump. If the skater takes off from an outside edge, then it's a Lutz jump. The figure skater goes backwards into the air and lands on the other side with these sides. However, the axel jump takes off forward with one foot and rotate an extra 1/2 revolutions and lands on the other foot.
@SweetMillefeuille
@SweetMillefeuille 6 жыл бұрын
The only tell for the lutz is the slight lean and reversed direction just before takeoff so I find it quite hard to differentiate from a flip. Especially for skaters who don't do a clear lutz so it ends up looking like a flip, hence the term "flutz"-ing.
@mateoferretto2175
@mateoferretto2175 6 жыл бұрын
SweetMillefeuille actually, since the flip uses the inside edge they generally do a three-turn before jumping. For the lutz they always move backwards and jump.
@RaymondHng
@RaymondHng 6 жыл бұрын
These are the six jumps in order of difficulty for a skater who spins counter clockwise and lands on their right foot. The difference is which edge and direction they are taking off when jumping. 1. Toe loop-Right Back Outside edge, Left toe pick-assisted 2. Salchow-Left Back Inside edge 3. Loop-Right Back Outside edge 4. Flip-Left Back Inside edge, Right toe pick-assisted 5. Lutz-Left Back Outside edge, Right toe pick-assisted 6. Axel-Left Forward Outside edge
