Michael Caine is a Korean War combat veteran. I would not be surprised at all if the emotions from this film are both a mix of masterful acting and heartfelt sorrow for his brothers. It's beautiful.

I was living in Paris 25 years ago when my father made his first trip to Europe to visit. He was in the 82nd and 101st airborne after WWII and was a historian who later taught high school history. We went to Normandy and he walked the beaches and walked the cemeteries of The Allies but we were also humbled by the care and respect given German graves. They were just as manicured as the others. Seeing him get lost in the history as we went from place to place to have his fill of putting all the pieces together. We missed the last train back to Paris and had to sleep at the Bayeaux Hôtel de la Gare - a seldom used room in the attic of the brasserie at the station. It was an ancient building and we joked as we shared the old bed with what seemed to be a straw mattress and joked how this must have been how it was 50 years hence. That trip was one of the dearest memories I have of him. Miss you dad. Every day.

We just held a little celebration for a friend who is 104 years old. It marked 80 years since he was rescued after his Halifax crashed into the Mediterranean on July 17th, 1943. He and 5 other crew members were rescued 9 days later. We asked him what kept him going, and he said hope. His pilot was 20 years old, and he landed the Halifax on the ocean, getting all the crew into the dinghy safely before it broke apart. The crash site was 300 miles from the Italian mainland and 150 miles from the North African coast. After 212 hours, they were finally rescued by a British destroyer. A true hero and a gentleman.

Interesting story elsewhere on KZfaq, with Sir Mike tells us about his experiences in the Korean War. Michael and his other squaddie mates, crawling on their bellies through the Chinese lines, so close to the enemy that he could smell the garlic on their breath. Michael said that afterwards, he's never ever been frightened of anything since.

My dad (Canadian army) landed on the beaches on June 7th. One day after D-Day. He was lucky he was not in the first assault. He did get seriously wounded later and was send back home. He never did say much about the war. My wife's parents were both in the British army. Her mother in England and her father in North Africa, Italy, Germany. Neither talked much about the war. I feel proud of them all; also am proud of all who served for what they did and the sacrifices they made. This movie sounds a lot like his story, EXCEPT, he never once talked about it being a waste! He was never sad about those he lost, he said the best he would see again soon. Looks awesome. My Dad was at Normandy, the Western Desert and Sicily and finally into Germany. He'd have loved this film, sadly he passed in 1980 far too early. Me? Vietnam. Uncle Korea. My younger brother. 22 years in USAF. Wife? Marines. Mom? Lived near Sheffield, during WWII growing up, she's gone also. My Grandfather? WWI. Just the preview made me tear up. Will the young appreciate this movie, or will they flock to another superhero movie or Barbie? How many truly know what was given and yes it was given for all future generations and should never be forgotten. To all the vets commenting here? I salute all of you, deeply. Thank You isn't enough!

WOW! Excellent trailer. I’ve always enjoyed watching any movie Michael Caine appeared in. He is one of the greatest actors of all time in my book. He had a style all his own and could adapt to anything. Wished he could have won more than 6 Oscars and 2 Academy awards because he certainly deserved the few he did get. All my respect Michael and you can bet I’ll be watching this one as well.

Guaoo!
