I never agree with the "American Dream" interpretation. Gatsby's dream is to be recognized as someone important, by the old money. That is quintessentially status conscious etho of the European value system. Being rich is not enough, seduction of and elopement with Daisy is not enough, he wants a "proper" wedding with old-money respected family of Daisy. And frankly, the book is also not a "masterpiece" by any stretch of the imagination. For one, if fails the very basic "show, do not tell" etho. Everything about Gatsby is told, literally spelled out, every detail, by Nick Carraway, the narrator. The actual passages on Gatsby himself, while not non-existent, is thin. Daisy, of course, is also essentially a caricature. The most interesting and full-throated character, it turns out, was actually the brute and careless Tom Buchanan. In any case, most writings that extoll it as the "greatest novel" of the last century, doesn't even understand what it's about.
