In German we’d say:
THE GREAT INDIAN KITCHEN ist eine schonungslos-realistische Anklage an das Patriarch, die auf beklemmende Art und Weise aufzeigt, dass wir noch immer einen langen Weg vor uns haben.

"Thanks Science" 👌🏻 This is a brilliant movie and tight slap against the patriarchy and gender roles in the Indian families regardless of the religion or race. The problem is too deep rooted into the society that, it's almost unknown to the females that, they are being dominated and to the men that they are Toxic and dominant, it's just normal for both parties because that's how it has been for a very long time. I will note down certain key scenes from the movie in reply since it has spoilers.
@vishnu.bharadwaj

Few scenes that's detailed beautifully in movie. # The awkwardness of the arranged marriage setup. (We have seen this in many movies but it's just real as shown in this.) # The facial expression of husbands character when the wife pours the dosa batter perfectly on the first day after marriage. # The mother moving out to help pregnant daughter at a distant land . The shifting of her attire from saree to a first time salwar clearly pointing out she is far away from Kerala. # The emphasis of the leaky kitchen sink. (This somehow exactly happened in my cousins place, came in after movie discussion in family whatsapp group) means that it might be happening in 1000s of other kitchen around the country :D # The emphasis on the Indian meal. (To make someone understand that an Indian meal is not an easy preparation ) # When the husband saying that, he is not against her going for job. But he will decide when the right time is. (Control over women is just seem to have transferred from the DNA of father to son, when the father denies her going for job at first) # The innocence of little girl who brings milk, grown into the Toxic system seeking for the wife unaware of anything. # The transformation of wife from happy alone to happy married servant to angry married servant to the newly discovered divorcee .
@vishnu.bharadwaj

Even though the emphasis of certain religious aspects in the movie are depicted correctly, some are direct mockery (will know how it will turn out soon when more people watches the movie, opinions are coming in a split as of now) I personally am living alone for past 7 years and can easily reflect on every aspect of the movie if not directly but in an extended way. But it is unfortunate that some others even though well educated ones follow the same mistakes of the past. It might be a very simple task, for example; it is always the wife's or mom's duty to make tea for guest arriving in a home. It's just that nobody questions it. I might not have been any different sometimes if I didn't get a different exposure. An extremely important factor to be noted in the movie is that Nimisha's character has grown in a different condition altogether (the emphasis of gulf ) and she could understand the problem because it wasn't normal for her. But, what if someone's grown into this, how will she realise that she's not a slave, it's not her only duty, it's not her life she's living. Education helps but not always.

I forgot to mention about the cinematography. The angles chosen to show the chaos, the top angles showing the amount of work happening on the kitchen slab, the wide angle shot that shows the entirety of the kitchen; everything is very neatly portrayed.

I was staying with my husband in Poland for last 3 years and delivered our second baby there and the doctor recommended to have bedrest for one months unfortunately none of our family was there with us to care of my 1st baby and the usual household. It was by then my husband understood what a house wife is going through in her daily life.Compared to kerala household work in European living conditions are sooo easy but still my husband found it difficult for him to handle and finally he said that I have earned his respect for taking care of him and his family. Thanks for a great review, as always, Jimmy. I remember my mother having to stay out of the kitchen during her periods. Plus, a lot of other nonsense. When I started my periods and refused to follow these unreasonable rules, there was a battle every month. My dad and brother went to Sabarimala, the same pilgrimage shown in the movie, and they ended up renting a room for a month because I wouldn't stay confined in my room at home.

Please imagine the role of this woman with 2 children and may be one with special needs. A marriage based on slavery can not take up challange like raising a challenge like raising a child with special needs. I have seen such marriages breaking when husband distances himself from the wife and child cause she gave birth to special need child and can't stand it's presence in his perfect life. I remember when I was in high school, my friend ( she is a hindu brahmin) used to cry when she gets her monthly periods. Because her family won't allow her to sleep in bed and she has to go another room. They serve her food in separate dish and cup. On the seventh day she has to take everything ( bed sheet,pillow cover, dish , cup and what ever she touched) to the pond and wash everything and she has to take bath at early morning 5 am. I got shocked when I herd about these things but later I understand its not not just her many girls situation in my class is same.

Sir one more thing. It's about song lyrics. lyrics are not written in mainstream malayalam language. This language is known as 'Paluva language'. It was a language which has a secret behaviour/ misterious nature which was used by dalits especially 'Parayar/ sambavar' in Kerala in a period when untouchability, caste descrimination & atrocities were so strong. They used this language inorder to save life and protect their children & women from higher caste land lords. As i said earlier since it has a secret nature higher caste feudal lords couldnt understand what they are saying each other. And time gone and the caste descrimination and atrocities were swept away (I mean directly) and this languge became a rare language. Even present descendants of that community dont know how to use it. But it was carried over from generation to generation by some people. The lyrist of this song whose name is Mrudula devi is one among them. She is a writer and dalit-women activist too.

Review is nice. Movie is not realistic in many aspects. Middle class and upper class house hold kitchens of kerala replaced ammi kallu with mixie and Firewood stoves with Gas Stoves at least 25 years back. I cannot imagine kerala house holds hanging on to all these outdated customs in 2021. The kind of houses that follow the customs that are shown in the movie do not even form 0.5% of the contemporary kerala society. I am not discounting the efforts and hard work of women. They still work hard tirelessly, but they have all the modern gadgets in their kitchens. I also agree to the fact that women do most of the work in kitchens and house hold chores and men still do not participate much. The biggest issue with this movie is that it has mixed timelines. They show customs that were prevalent at least 30 years ago and generalise those to current society. The characters of husband and father in law shown in the movie must be the rarest of the rare species in the current kerala society.

It will be great if you can choose 3-4 broad areas like say cinematography, acting, direction etc. and score them separately and finally the score for the movie.

I agree with the movie highlighting the issues of many/most women in India. I also think it is intellectually dishonest in failing to peel the layers of human nature. Religion / marriage is just one of the means [And they can be a blessing for many as well] for humans to exploit others for power, money, sex and sadism. But they in themselves are not the problem. Living in a developed country where religion or marriage is not an integral part of the society, yet the existence of inevitable chaos of human nature irrespective of prevalent feminism and atheism, just shows that there is an intrinsic problem with human nature [both men and women]. And if we don't address that we would be just finding new scapegoats. Sometimes it can be women, sometimes men. Sometimes religion, sometimes race. Sometimes wealth, sometimes poverty. Like a pendulum we keep swinging from one scapegoat to another.

@@TheJimmyCage actually the movie is also discussing some caste issues. the servent who came to their home is from a lower caste, and they are calling their aunt while they are getting ready for the pilgrimage. The director tries to show the untouchability of modern times. the songs of that movie (except the group dance song ) is written in Paluva language, which was used by the Paraya caste (Untouchable caste) in the earlier period. the servant humming the song while they are cleaning the home.

Fun facts. 1) 1 interviewer asked the director some viewers felt that the end credits looks like woman figure. Is it a directors brilliance?l. He answered no no it s not. Then he says if viewers thinks so oh yes let it be a directors brilliance and let them come up with more brilliance like this. 2)some people watched the movie on pirated sites and some of them contacted the producer or director saying they want to pay the price of 140 rupees to their account. Some of them paid. The director says he dont encourage it but it may be the first time it happened. He says sometimes movies do influence people and he is happy about that.

Thank you for the review. I was uncomfortable the whole time watching the movie, you're right it's almost a horror movie. I almost couldn't sit through it. I was almost hoping she would get a break when menstruating, but they did a good job showing how it made her feal.
