In his worst video to date, World of Warships semi-proudly presents, an angry, drunken, Scotsman ranting about something he is completely unqualified to talk about while making you nostalgic for Age of Empires II.
Come live the excitement, the memories, and the anger of when two Ocean Liners dueled each other on the high seas during World War One.

So two countries had the exact same idea to disguise an ocean liner. And they chose two ships to disguise as each other. And they completed this plan at the exact same time, and the two ships met each other on their first mission? If this shit was written in a book I would say that's too big of a coincidence, and thus terribly written.

@@MichaelJohnson-tw7dqI don't know if you're familiar with ex Navy Seal Don Shipley* - he investigates instances of alleged, (often confirmed) cases of stolen valour. Almost all of his investigations involve Special Forces claims, with the vast majority being Navy Seal claims. Even crazier is the proportion of guys claiming to be ex Seal Team Six. I suppose the thought process is, "I'm gonna lie so I might as well lie BIG". You'll often get the ones who can't just lie about being ex Navy Seals, they've also got to have served in other illustrious units or corps. *His channel was called Buds131, but after some issues with KZfaq he's had to relaunch under Don Shipley Former Buds131. The format usually involves a person, (wife, girlfriend, employer, associate, or potential business partner) getting in touch with Don Shipley asking if he could verify someone's claims to have been (usually) an ex Seal - he then looks into the claim before making contact with the guy making the claim. At this stage the subject will either keep digging and lying, or they'll come clean. If you've not seen it, it is very watchable - Don and his wife, Diane, are wonderful together and are extremely committed to stamping out stolen valour claims.

I find it hilarious that they had the idea to turn their ocean liner into a gunboat to cause chaos among merchant vessels, then had the idea of disguising it as one of the enemies ocean liners that looked similar only for everything to go to shit as on their first voyage they encounter the ship they were disguised as, that had also been turned into a gun boat.

Oceanliners are not cruise ships.
@hanzzel6086
@hanzzel6086 4 ай бұрын
An Ocean Liner is like a Greyhound bus, it gets you from one place to another (relatively) quickly in varying degrees of comfort. The destination is the whole point. A Cruise Liner is a party bus, it is meant to be fun and comfortable. The voyage is the point, it might even end at the starting location. As such, an Ocean Liner can (and did/do) be/become a cruise ship, but a Cruise ship can't (unless it used to be one) be/become an Ocean Liner (too much difference in hull structure).

An armed merchantman was a pirate and third party combatant if it was'nt directly affiliated, and a Submarine could be attacked and forced to sink by a ship attempting a ram, fulfilling the quotent. From what I recall, the captain got five medals from the company he worked for at the time, for Bravery, since each attack, the Germans sent an angry letter declaring the event. WW1 is strange because... basically everyone was? It was the "War to end all wars" in the very genuine sense that it resolved and wrapped up several previous conflicts in Europe. But each conflict ended with treaties and restrictions, which built up to the degree where... well, Britain goes to war because a guy buying a sammich shoot fancy hat man in a no-where land. Von Bismarck has this problem, and made the point, that the web of treaties was like a web that tied them all back, and tied them all together. Britain was a strange one in the war, since historically it had always had a closer tie to Germany than France, and had always been an arbiter of these treaties, There was the valid argument that if you could tie Britain up in enough knots of paperwork it would just step back out of the conflict. German ministers spent a lot of the war just... coming up with ways to try and get different groups to stop for a short time to give them an edge. They sent Lenin to Russia, funded revolts in the French Army, tried to make the Royal Navy more negotiable by trailing warships all over the globe and using destroyers to capture fishing boats in the north sea. And the whiney aspect was key, All these treaties were like a web and basically all sides were trying to pull all the different strings to force eachother to step back or stop. Submarines were a technicality in the Cruiser Rules. A loophole.

@@gehtdichnixan9005 Frankly, what was and was not considered a war crime in WW1 is kind of bonkers. For example, flame throwers and poison gas? 17:00 I am pretty sure that the Carmania was not in fact disguised as the Cap Trafalgar, so the battle was in fact between two identical looking ships operating under the same name. Edit: fair point at the end, probably should have waited until the video finished to comment. One point though, Flags. Given Cap Trafalgar was acting as a merchant raider, it would likely have flown a British flag (probably the Red Ensign) until the battle started. Carmania meanwhile was acting as a Q-Ship, with her disguise simply being of her armament, not as a German ship, so she was likely also flying the correct British flag prior to the engagement. Also, the Royal Navy and German Navy likely used different shades of grey for their paint schemes, with Cap Trafalgar being the only ship present using another nation's shade of grey as a disguise.

My spin is that-if large caliber naval rifles didn't pop rivets when fired we'd still be mounting them. And you do realize that US subs are the exception that proves the "Americans jam guns anywhere there's a space for them" rule* Citing All WW2 BB, CA, CL and many DD and DE as well. Frankly, I'm amazed we didn't sortie with a mob of US crewed sampans. Heck-one could probably mount a dozen stanchion guns on a 30' sampan. Or a single 8".

The reason we don't use those huge ass cannons and rifles anymore is, unfortunately, more mundane. They are not as effective as tomahawks. So basically, the death of the battleship was because of the DDG. You don't really need huge cannons when you can just launch a big ass missile at someone from several dozen nautical miles away. Today's defenses are also so damn good that, usually, if you don't completely and horrifically neglect your maintenance, undertrain your staff, force people to say your zombie of a ship is in good enough condition for warfare, and in general, give a damn about human life, you usually won't even take that missile. I don't even think we'll see railguns as they've basically fallen out of love for them in comparison to Hypersonic missiles. By the way, if you listen into to any wartime comms between ships and you hear them screaming "VAMPIRE! VAMPIRE!" That's the codename for an Anti-ship missile.
