While the legend of the KMS Bismarcks final days have been studied and re-told time and time again, much emphasis has always been placed on the exploits of Arc Royal and Force H.
But while the British have basked in the glory of sinking the pride of the Kriegsmarine a small, lesser-known tale of heroic badassery was about to unfold. The legend of the Polish Destroyer Piorun, a crew who took the 1v1 me challenge a little too personally.

Sadly Ordinary Seaman Richard Polanski who was the last surviving crew member of ORP Piorun who served during the hunt for Bismarck passed away on December 17, 2022 at the age of 101. Piorun, and this sliver of history has now went from being in living memory to the history books. But it’s certainly a tale which will never be forgotten.

I don't believe that special part of Heaven was created by the crews of those two ships. I can tell you one more amazing true story. It's a story of Polish submarine ORP "Orzeł" (Eagle). At the start of WWII on 31.08.1939 "Orzeł" was interned in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, Lithuanians disarmed the ship, but Poles managed to keep 1 torpedo, simulating jammmed loading mechanism, it was low on fuel and maps were confiscated. Yet they managed to escape, then raided German tanker for fuel, then went through Danish Straits, without maps! Ship's navigator drawn map of Baltic from his memory! They escaped to UK. We had amazing, brilliant sailors at that time. I love my Poland. Poland is not a land, Poland is in hearts and souls of Poles, nobody can take it from us!

In an alternate universe the Piorun's crew, overcome by battle-lust, rammed the vessel alongside the Bismark and boarded her, ultimately capturing her as a prize in spite of numerical inferiority. She would then serve out the rest of the war as the ORP Zemsta, flagship of the Free Polish Navy.

That whole "We are poles!" sounds totally like the Polish, as according to my dad who's father was part of General Anders' army. I heard similar stories with the RAF getting frustrated with polish air fighters who, upon seeing the Germans, would immediately break formation to charge at them. Not that I can blame them, obviously, they lost their homeland to them and then it was taken by the USSR. If I was them, effectively having no homeland anymore, I'd be pissed too!

Can we just appreciate just how INSANE the crew here was? And I don't just mean the mad lad Leeroy Jenkins charge at the Bismarck, firing all guns while screaming "I am a Pole!" over and over again. I mean the fact that her crew, if the reports are true, are standing on the deck, hurling insults and trash and firing pistols at the ship, and even bringing up instruments to sing their national anthem. All this...while the ship is maneuvering to avoid Bismarck's fire. all while the Bismarck is shooting at them. ...just how absolutely 'no fucks given' mad lad do you have to be in order to be singing and playing an instrument while a 50K+ ton behemoth of a warship is raining 15 inch shells and whatever else it can down upon you? Just found your channel through this video. What a powerful story. When the entire Atlantic Fleet was so terrified of Bismark, one tiny Polish Destroyer said 'hold my Żywiec' and got in her face , and stayed there for hours, making Bismark waste most of her shells with no hits scored. Imagine the damage Bismark could have done if she hadn't wasted her ammo trying to hit Piorun, even as damaged as she was. This should be a far more known story than it is. Thank you for sharing this, in your unique storytelling method.

There's a method in it. You had to be stupid enough to become a Hussar for example, mind that they never retreat. There was a Battle of Hodow, June 11, 1694 , it's a long post, copy of oficial info on Wikipedia, but this story is just insane and it's true: " The first clash took place in the fields near the village of Hodów, where the Polish cavalry attacked the Tatar vanguard, numbering about 500-600 horses. The Poles captured two mirzas (commanders). After this clash, the Poles, realizing that the main forces of the enemy were yet to come and that they had no chance against the overwhelming numerical superiority of the Tatars, withdrew to the village of Hodów. There, the armored (pancerni) and hussars dismounted from their horses and used caravans, koblen, fences, tables, barrels and the like for defense. The attacks of the Tatars, on foot and with the help of firearms, were repulsed by about 300 armored and 100 hussars for five to six hours. When the ammunition ran out, the defenders fired Tatar arrows inserted into the barrels instead of bullets. According to various estimates, there were 25,000 to 70,000 Tatars, but King Jan III Sobieski gave 40,000 in an interview with Mikołaj Złotnicki, which would give a force ratio of 100: 1. Unable to defeat the defenders, the Tatars sent Lipki, i.e. Polish Tatars, demanding surrender. The Poles refused, so due to significant losses, the Tatars retreated to Kamieniec Podolski, which they occupied at that time. Thanks to the effective defense, the further Tatar invasion was stopped. Most of the defenders were wounded in the battle, and several dozen were killed, including a dozen banner comrades (banner was a base cavalry unit at that time). Konstanty Zahorowski, the commander of one of the hussars, died of his wounds three days after the battle. Mikołaj Tyszkowski was taken captive by the Tatars and later bought from it" We still have it down inside us, it's put to sleep during peace time, but try to attack us and you'll face it with full force. Poland is a European empire's grave, like Afghanistan in Asia. She's not worth attacking as she becomes your eternal pain in the arse 😀 Peace brothers ✌☮

"because it's a hole." Man/pig sir I live near Clydebank and they haven't been shook like that since March 1941. Also the blitz helps explain part of that after that particular attack there was little left standing. Most of the place was rebuilt in the 50s and 60s in that glorious time of absolutely shite "social" architecture and town planning.

I love this. It reminds me of an account I read in a book about the airwar where a Pole in a Mustang, While over Germany on a long range escort mission got into a dogfight with a 109 and had exhausted his ammunition. He had an opportunity to break it off and make a clean escape. Instead he knew the Jerry didn't know he was out and he figured he'd just run the bastard out of fuel and get him that way. It worked and the German had to bail out.

I used something similar in warthunder air battles. When im out of ammo, if I'm fast enough I'll loiter behind and enemy plane and follow them as they manoeuvre. Some teammate usually shows up and gets a clean shot on him after some time of this

Repulse was Renown's sister ship not the Hoods. She was a battlecruiser with 6x15 in guns. Hood had 2 more main guns and twice the armour thickness (really a fast battleship) and she didn't have a sister ship as the rest of the admiral class were cancelled, she was effectively a class of one.

In the battle of britain a Polish pilot in a Hurricane got into a dogfight with a Bf109. after some time, the pole damaged the 109´s engine and followed it to the ground. The Messerschmitt still tried to escape, at low alt, but the Pole wouldn´t let go. After he had no ammo, he made a maneuver to bypass the 109 and attacked him head on. Aparrently the german Pilot wanted to evade the Pole, but at no altitude he crashed into the ground and died. So, what did we learn? The Japanese make suicide attacks and die. The poles make suicide attacks and survive

piorun, błyskawica and grom have pretty much the same general meaning - a lightning In common use, piorun seems to be more about discharge itself, as a weather phenomenon, błyskawica more about flash of light associated with it (because of "błysk" which means "flash"), and grom is older word.... there is also another word "grzmot", which is noun for sound that lightning makes.

Hello there,as to the translation of "piorun" it would be thunderbolt and not just thunder nor thunderstorm, there was another ship ORP Burza, whose name is literally thunder, of the Wicher class, meaning storm, as in the wind and not the clouds and so on. Also there is another polish ship from this time ORP błyskawica, that also stands for thunderbolt, that you can visit as it is a musem in Gdynia war port.
