In the comics Darksied had nothing to do with Hank Henshaw's origin. He did later take over Apokalypse though and upgrade himself with Apokalyptian technology. He also later gained control of the Manhunters. In the comics Hank Henshaw was a Technopathic Technomorph, able to control, inhabit and alter machines and technology, with his consciousness no longer being able to survive inside a biological form.

He came off as more whiny than tragic. I mean I understand his pain but if he just escaped on time his wife would stil be alive. His blind devotion to Clark sealed his fate.
