This is a great western dance hall scene from The Great Race (1965). Lily Olay (Dorothy Provine) was great in this scene. Dorothy also played in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963) and another one of my favorite 60's movies Good Neighbor Sam (1964) alongside Jack Lemmon.

Filming of "The Great Race" took place from June 15 to November 27, 1964. Dorothy Provine, was 29 then, as seen in the video clip. She died of emphysema at 75, almost 45 years after this film's release on July 1, 1965. Dorothy Provine, 75 (Jan. 20, 1935 Deadwood, SD - Apr. 25, 2010 Bremerton, WA). Natalie Wood was 26 for most of the filming dates. Natalie Wood, 43 (Jul. 20, 1938 San Francisco, CA - Nov. 29, 1981 Pacific Ocean, off Santa Catalina Island, CA). R.I.P. to two of the finest and loveliest actresses of the 1960s.

For my money “The Great Race” was an exceptionally entertaining movie and as other reviewers have said underrated. It is also rarely shown on television for reasons totally unknown to me. Dorothy Provine playing the saloon singer Lily Olay was absolutely wonderful in her small cameo role and the movie is worth watching for her alone as can be seen from this clip.

The Great Race has got to be one of my favorite all of time movies. I loved it as a kid but even more as an adult when I grew to understand the innuendos. Heck, I like it so much I named my vintage military truck the Hannibal (Twin) 8('s). Thank you, Blake Edwards, for this CLASSIC! I have always wondered though if some years later that Mel Brooks wasn't unconsciously spoofing Lily Olay with Madeline Kahn's "Dietrichesque" Lily von Shtupp in "Blazing Saddles". I agree the characters themselves are dissimilar yet there are similarities in their performances...name, performing in a rowdy saloon, trying to seduce the main character...Anyway, just a thought.

A number of competition stunt scenes were filmed near my home in Kentucky as well as the road scenes with the rock fences toward the end of the film. My dad and uncle were extras and were paid handsomely. I've watched the film a dozen times and still cannot spot them. My dad was very vexed at the amount of money wasted while waiting for the right weather shots and for Keenan Wynn to get his lines right. But he did get to play pool with Peter Falk!

I can't view Natalie Woods as a sexy star because her greatest fame came from her as a child star in "The Miracle On 34th Street". The movie, MO3S, is so manically awesome that I can't view her in any other class but as a child. Something formidable doesn't feel kosher about that. I think people have their heads screwed on backwards to view her other than that. Hence, she's just another common woman as an adult, Robert Wagner's wife. However, Dorothy Provine rocks the _ house down!!!

It's funny… this scene is somewhat similar to the Lilly Von Schtupp song in Blazing Saddles, which worked better because Madeline Kahn is much, much funnier.

+Geoff Scheinbach Yes but this was 10 years earlier - if anything Blazing Saddles was a tribute or pastiche. Really, are you trying to take something away from Dorothy Provine's performance? Because it's pretty close to perfect from what I can see.

+Claire Hamilton No, nothing against Dorothy Provine. It is unfair to compare her to Madeline Kahn. Hers is one of the select few comic turns that was Oscar nominated!

Look at the hilarous bit from 3:28-3:33 with Lilly throwing her boa over Maggie's face, not just once, but twice!
