What was the Great Schism? What was the major effect caused by the Great Schism? In this video, we'll walk through the history of the East-West Schism from 1054 AD, and the ripple effects caused by the schism.
Excerpt:
The eastern and western parts of the church have had a long history of unity and disunity as Christianity spread around the world. Historians speak of an East-West Schism as a singular event that took place in the year 1054. But there was more behind this single event that led to the East-West Schism of the church.

Remember, the Filioque was never mentioned in the Gospels. Rather, the Gospel alludes to the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and being sent from the Son. The terms were often used interchangeably in certain regions in defence of the Son's divinity, which gave rise to the schism afterwards.

There isn't a Biblical one. I've read that Toledo bishops were actually trying to deal with 1. Muslim influence and 2. Belief that Holy Spirit is not actually God. (An old, old heresy that is still around, Oneness Pentecostal or JW.)

I'm struggling with the same thing, though I was raised Pentacostal. I'd probably be a Catholic but I just don't think I can ever accept Immaculate Conception, and I know the Orthodox Church doesn't believe that. But at the same time I recognize the importance of apostolic succession and I also feel a sense of peace when I think about becoming a Catholic that I don't entirely feel when I think about becoming an Orthodox. I also struggle with the fact that I feel deeply called to some form of ministry but I know Catholic priests cannot marry(excepting some exceptions in the Eastern Catholic Church) whereas Orthodox priests can. And I know I need to be married in order to stay away from sin.

For what it's worth, I'd say try out a Protestant church that preaches the Bible and treats the Bible as the final authority. I love my Catholic and Orthodox brothers but they can be so wrapped up in traditions and dogma that they lose focus on Jesus Christ. This schism seems to be focused on how important The Pope actually was when his importance shouldn't even be in the same stratosphere as Jesus Christ. See what real Bible believing Protestants are talking about when they say Sola Scriptura and Sola Fida (I know a lot of denominations are trash) and make a decision, but don't forget it's ALL about Jesus Christ and what he did for us. Acts 2:38 Ephesians 2:8-9 2 Timothy 3:16-17
@IsaiahINRI
@IsaiahINRI 29 күн бұрын
@@euthyphro8935 But Jesus says that the Apostles had the authority of Heaven. First individually to Peter when he confesses Jesus as The Christ in Matthew 16 and then to the rest of the 70 in Matthew 18. And they all said to trust the bishops. Paul, one of the Apostles though not the 70, even appeals to his authority as an apostle in one of his letters. And Ignatius(a disciple of Polycarp who was a disciple of John the Apostle) said to trust the bishops as where they are so is Christ. And, if the Apostles passed on their authority all the way down to present day, then the bishops of the Catholic Church, Orthodox and Roman, would then also have that same authority: the authority of Heaven. So to deny them, unless properly excommunicated, would be to deny the Apostles and so deny Christ as well. And Sola Fide is unbiblical. Jesus says what we must do to inherit eternal life. He says to keep the commands. And He even lists several sins that if you commit, without repentance, you would go to Hell. And, again, if the Apostles have the keys to the Kingdom, as Jesus said they do, then if they or their successors say something forfeits eternal life, then they have forfeited eternal life. Likewise with Sola Scriptura, if the Apostles grant authority to their successors, then the successors' words must also be taken as scripture. I agree many have lost sight of Christ but that does not make their commands or decrees necessarily without authority, unless that authority has been taken away like in the case of excommunication or abrogation by a future successor. As Jesus said about the Jews, do what they say but do not do their works.
@euthyphro8935
@euthyphro8935 29 күн бұрын
@@IsaiahINRI we agree more than you think. The Apostles absolutely had authority to dictate and teach scripture which they did. The Bible even says in Thessalonians 2:15 to respect the Tradition given by word or epistle... from the apostles, who have all died. Where we're going to run into an issue is apostolic succession, which I've never been convinced of. The church doesn't have more authority than scripture, The Bible says in both deuteronomy 4:2 and Revelation 22:18-19 not to add or take away from his word. Finally I've given chapter and verse for why I believe as I do. Should we believe councils and dogma carry more weight than scripture? Do our works that are filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6) compare at all to Jesus's sacrifice?
@IsaiahINRI
@IsaiahINRI 29 күн бұрын
@@euthyphro8935 Jesus gave them this authority, though. Jesus humbled Himself to agree with whatever they declare.If they then declare that apostolic succession is the way, then Jesus agrees. There is even a scriptural basis for these things, so it isn't solely rested upon Ignatius

I hate being stuck between denominations. It just leads me into a path of more fear and confusion. I go to a church that calls themselves non-denominational but they come off as Baptist/southern Baptist to my husband and I. Not that I see anything wrong with Baptists, it is just the one who runs the church (my FIL) says he has this church set up because of the others being hypocrites. He is friendly to all but I feel like I'm being misguided a bit and some of the theology doesn't make sense. I try to listen/watch videos online and read Wikipedia for history of the church to try to understand which church had it wrong and where it all went wrong. Some claim that Jesus left a church, not a Bible but the Bible was also written by His apostles and/or disciples so it is very weird to think that the Bible holds little authority even it is said to be God-breathed and His word. I too want us to get along but there are things that confuse me so much. I am partially glad/blessed that I am even concerned with this because it shows that I am indeed working my salvation with both fear and trembling. Part of me also thinks that a lot of this is a huge misunderstanding. Like the Holy spirit either coming from the Father or from the Father and Christ. I wish that was the only issue I have to deal with with the other denominations around me. I can definitely simp for the catholics a bit when they say that us protestants can't even fully agree on things. I've been told by my church that if we all believe in Christ and His sacerfice for mankind and that we love God with our everything and love others as ourselves, we are good but unfortunately I have come to understand that things are way more nuanced than that.

The gospel of St. John states it begins with logos and Logos was with God. Logos is God. This is the Trinity. The Trinity is God revealing himself to us. Pythagorus prepared us for the Trinity. He believed number was the order of the universe. ( 1+2=3) 1 is unity. 2 is diversity. 3 is the Trinity (unity and diversity at the same time) Another characteristic of God is beauty. “The true, the good, the beautiful” Because of 20th century, beauty gets lost as a result of the decline of art. Beauty is a manifestation of God. There is evidence of this Trinity throughout creation.

Excellent summary of the Great Schism and its underlying roots. I understand your toning down your descriptions of the Crusades as being "misbehavior" but it was dramatically more than that. When the Muslims took over Constantinople they didn't kill many people. When the "Christian" Crusaders came they left no one alive. It was a massacre -- mass murder, plundering, raping, you name it they did it. But overall, this video is a very thorough overview of the history that provides a lot of detail other descriptions of the Schism don't go into. Thanks, you have a new subscriber with alerts!

The more I learn about the Catholics, the most I become aware that they are a source of so many conflicts and controversies in the global Christianity. @vinnyv949
@vinnyv949 10 ай бұрын
Well then you’re misinformed. Catholics are the only true Christians and have done their best to put down heresy and spread the gospel to the world. The Catholic Church is the reason just about everyone in earth can claim to be a Christian even if they call themselves some other form of Christianity. But without the universal church there would be no Christianity. What this video doesn’t say is the sack of Constantinople wasnt until the 4th crusade. There were 3 crusades that were sent to help the Byzantines deal with Muslims by the Pope after the schism. And the Byzantines were quite treacherous. Read about how they left Byzantines during the siege of Antioch during the first crusade. Yes the fourth crusade went horribly off script as Constantinople was not the original target. However to cry for the Byzantines who conquered and pillaged so many peoples when they get conquered is pretty rich. They were at an all-time low point with horribly incompetent or outright malevolent emperors when the fourth crusade arrived. The only reason you would say the Catholic Church is a cause of controversy is because you want to believe some form of heresy which is a mortal sin and evil.
@Pietrosavr
@Pietrosavr 6 ай бұрын
Strange conclusion you came to. While the behaviour of the crusaders was inexcusable the division that happened was mostly political and not theological. The entire church was under the popes rule and everyone recognised it, unfortunately secular ruler of Constantinople decided to replace a bishop with another because he refused to give communion to someone who openly had incest, Rome wanted to restore the proper bishop but they rebelled and were a significant factor in the schism. Read about Photius and Coerularius, the schism was mostly personal and political not actually theological.
