But we glorify the US dead as heros. I see them as naieve, their actions in that particular moment showed heroism but the fact that they got payed to go fight overseas makes them mercanaries and your bias sees them as patriots. I find it disappointing at best that here and in the movie, the actions of the 160th crew are diminished or not called out by name in the credits. One was a 2LT of mine and a Maj at this time, Stephen Reich. West Point graduate, US National team and Orioles system baseball pitcher. Otherwise known as Pilot 1 or Pilot 2 in the movie credits. Steve and his crew gave their lives to go save others and should be on equal footing!

The original plan, as formulated by the Marines, had a recon team of six operators (Marine Recon). But, when the mission went to the SEALs, they elected to only send four men. Also, strangely, the SEAL team opted to go into the mission with one of the least powered communication radios available to them: MBITR AN/PRC-148. The 148 is low in power, as compared to the heavier AN/PRC-117, which the SEALs opted against. Trapped in the gulch where they were ambushed, the 148 would have been useless as the signal would have not gotten out of the terrain. The satellite phone they had as back-up had a similar disadvantage due to satellite coverage in the terrain. Typically, special operations communications doctrine calls for four separate methods of communication in an operation (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency, or "PACE"). The AN/PRC-117 would have been a good "primary" in this terrain. While tragic, it is important that lessons from the errors made in this mission go to improve future tactics and techniques so that these incidents can be mitigated, or altogether avoided.

Decent analysis; The 82 mm M-1937 Soviet mortars weighs over 120 lbs and has a range of approx 300 meters, it take 3 men to operate effectively. The JEM is also the lightest and smallest and combat proven, crypto modernization program & certified by NSA to protect the confidentiality of voice and data. Also PACE exists for a specific mission or task, not a specific unit, because the plan must consider both intra /inter-unit sharing of information.

I don't know what its like to be a seal but I am a marine and I am honored to be on the same side as these men. I am also greatly honored of what Marcus an Chris said about Marines, we are THE hard changers and are ALWAYS itching for a fight. The fight never leaves us. Simper Fi. If there is a heaven I look forward to meeting these men.

Operation "Red Wings" was a Marine Corps operation where Phase 1 (recon) and Phase 2 (direct action) were to be performed by Task Force Blue (ST 10 and SDVT) since the air assets from Task Force Brown (160th SOAR) were SOF (SOF doctrine required this type of SOF involvement if their air assets were to be used). After action reports and post-operation intelligence revealed that - opposed to early, mostly exaggerated reports - the SEALs faced no more than 10 fighters at the time of the ambush. However, their positional advantage over the SEALs (high ground) greatly multiplied the enemy combat power and gave the appearance of more enemy. Mostly unknown to the public (but already released to the media) the infiltration helicopters erroneously dropped the fast rope at the infil site after the SEALs descended. This is a common procedure during direct action missions, but may have actually given away the presence of the SEAL team by morning. Better communication between the SEALs and the aviators could have prevented this. It is likely that - in the dark and with the noise - the SEALs had no idea this huge piece of equipment was left behind in the open.

Juan Perez good point. People often also don't know that the original insertion point was where the helicopter was shot down. The muj. (Not taliban) were waiting for them . Luttrell clearly states in his book that the team were aware of the dropped rope and made an attempt ( obviously failed) to hide it. It was the rope. Not the shepherds he loves blaming that have them away.

Intel on the area by Marine units assigned to that AOR, Navy analysis of the video released by the Taliban after the firefight, and interview transcript of Afghan who saved Marcus. So, a few things. That, and the FBI agent (former SEAL) originally assigned to Task Force Blue for that rotation (they were there to handle the counter-drug SSE tasks during SOF operations) was later assigned to our unit in SE AFG, so he had insight.

Maybe they remember Waco. Or maybe everybody's experience in the USA is not the same experience as ours. I am a vet, I don't need people to stand to make me feel like I fought for something. In fact I feel like I fought to allow them to not stand, so that I do not feel like I live in a fascist country that marginalizes people for feeling different from me. Yeah and I thought the same thing until I remembered the national guard being there among the feds and local agencies and evidence that they fired into the building and that there were members of Delta Force there as well firing automatic rifles into the building and FLIR picking up hundreds of rounds firing into the building from those positions, evidence of shape charges killing several women and babies, tanks of the N.G., and that Janet Reno and congress categorically denying all this material evidence. Women and children who were all unarmed being shot by our own military with very substantial evidence that this was a factual based homicide carried out by our military in conjunction with police. I just don't think someone kneeling to our national anthem is a big deal. Contrarily, I think it is important that our society reminds the powers that be who rules the government. The People. If they don't want to kneel because they think we are doing the wrong thing and want to correct me then go right ahead. I am not above reproach and am fallible even if I have a badge, a gun, or congressional authority. This does not mean they do not appreciate the entities that keep us safe from Russian invasion or terrorist attack. It means that they are trying to tell us something is wrong with the system that can be changed to uphold the truest form of Democratic freedom. God bless the USA, God bless Christianity, God bless us all.

you confuse GOD with "cannot" - two notions incompatible. HE is delicate, yes, allowing us make own decisions and mistakes too, but :-)) never powerless of anything. as for these guys, they won - if your defeat [tactical] give you illumination, epiphany - while victory [also tactical] just leave you with sensation [useless] of a pride, and worthless satisfaction, than later might be considered less valuable than former, you sure will agree.

nope. :-)) your mistake again. children starve because men aint no saints and let them starve. if the men were any better - you won't find no children starve. won't find no evil among men at all. separate contradictory notions please :-)) by the way, the "guys" only survived because locale villagers hid them, fed them, risked their own lives for them and sent word to troops command. word 'good' is to mild.
