This was my sort of homage to one of the greatest duel within quake history. Today I covered one of the most iconic and greatest quake match ever, Quakecon 2016 Duel Grandfinals between Evil and Rapha. This was my first major project I've completed on this channel, and I really hope you guy's enjoyed it. Huge shout out to SummoningSalt for inspiring this idea. I really hope I did his videos justice.

I thought Evil's game was focused on aggression rather than defense, even Rapha has repeatedly stated that Evil played an extremely aggressive style in QL. What do you mean by "defensive?" Most of these games are dragged out because of the clash between Evil's nearly perfect aggressive style and Rapha's perfect defensive wizardry. Evil knows he can't just push Rapha, because he'll just get punished, and Rapha will then go hyperdefensive upon obtaining a leading, which doesn't allow Evil to play his game. However, Rapha doesn't want to risk dying against Evil for the opposite reason. Evil's aggressive style perhaps shines the most in the way he pressures and chases the spawns. Evil can consistently chain frags off spawn (seriously watch the closing 2 minutes of 125 fps season #23 Grand Final Evil vs Cypher Lost World). This is why Rapha plays so slow and defensive to counter Evil's aggression. Watch how Rapha played DM13 against Evil in 2015. 1 frag lead then +back the whole game. By the way, if you haven't watched the 125 fps games. Even though they weren't major tournaments like the Dreamhacks, IEMs, and QuakeCons, there are some really great matches in there, though not at the same level as 2016 Elder. I'd actually say 125 fps Season #24's Grand Final is worth watching even next to QuakeCon 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. I would say the gameplay is faster in general though, as the Evil - Cypher matchup is very different from the Evil - Rapha matchup.

Hey there! Yep, I kinda miss wrote / misspoke when making the video. I'm not really well versed when it comes to QL, as it's one of my least played Quakes. Gonna keep your comment pinned so I don't confuse people who are interested :)

A crucial detail that makes the evil comeback so incredible which I think you missed was that after the double rail on Rapha, evil knew if Rapha spawned on the other side of the map, there was no way he would find him in time. So he leaves rail room, which allows the game to spawn rapha in there (since QL excludes the closest spawn points to prevent chain spawn kills). And he plays into the fact that the ONLY way he was getting that frag was IF rapha spawned back into that room. And sure enough. Yea it's pretty lucky, but to be able to maintain the wherewithal in a game THAT intense to play INTO that luck WHILE also hitting 2 PERFECT rockets is seriously what makes that one of the greatest plays in FPS history.

Not to mention, rapha tied up the previous map with a spawn frag, man there were a lot of crucial spawn frags in this tournament.

4:23 -- incorrect reasoning. The 1-map lead would be because that's how tournaments with Winner Brackets and Loser Brackets work, usually: Whoever makes it to the Grand Final through the Winner Bracket starts with a 1-map lead. This just *IS* , regardless of whether he has dropped maps on his path or not. .

honestly, as much as I enjoyed BOTH the games AND the commentary you did here (amazing job, btw !!), part of me is partially convinced that they had pre-arranged it in some way... After all, it was THE LAST ql big-money / big-name tournament, and the chance HAD to be taken for this to be made as amazing, exciting and memorable as possible !! Of course, these 2 are the best players in the world, but I doubt that anyone watching / following would have been especially excited to see a straight 3-0 sweep by any side. Therefore, the organizers / players HAD to make it memorable in some way... My 2 cents. :P .

Playing this game at the competitive level takes skill. Unlike CoD.
@Pyroteq
@Pyroteq 9 ай бұрын
Very cool. As a non Quake player however, I find the rules they use very weird. Coming from other arena FPS I believe that a tie on a map should just end in a tie and go to a new map. Having players play a single map for 28 minutes when they've just come out of another map is crazy. As someone that's played competitive FPS at a high level at tournaments a 15 minute match was incredibly mentally taxing after a few rounds with very small breaks in between. I can't imagine having to expand such a high stakes game to almost half an hour. Also, not having proper double elimination is a MASSIVE FAIL. The reason you have loser bracket finals and winner bracket finals is to ensure the player/team that wins the grand final WINS THE MOST AMOUNT OF OVERALL GAMES AGAINST THEIR OPPONENT. Giving a player just a single map lead is ridiculous because then you can have situations where a player/team wins a grand final, yet actually wins LESS GAMES overall than their opponent, they just happen to win the "right" games. Every match should count, so the winner should carry across ALL their wins. MLG perfected video game tournament structure in the mid 2000's. Anyone doing any other tournament structure is objectively and MATHEMATICALLY WRONG. In the end Evil wins 2 matches and Rapha wins 4, yet Evil is the champion? Even a toddler knows this makes literally zero sense. So sick of tournament organizers failing grade school maths and ruining tournaments.
