The game that peaked in the Arena FPS genre, where it was all about fast movement and endless fragging in the blink of an eye. Quake 3 is one of the closest games to being a perfect shooter in my opinion, and is the best Quake game in the franchise still. A good portion of the arena shooters that would come out a take a page from this games book and for good reason. Every other quake title released after would be divisive, even with Champions. But people still play Q3 and it's various versions available like CPMA and Defrag, as well as some of the conversion mods that spawned from it.
Hope you enjoy :)

a mixture of quakeworld,q2,q3 with proper matchmaking could be the ultimate fps the problem with modern fps games is their sluggish feel... and emphasis of "realism" , wich always isnt actualyl realistic, but just ugly.... same comparrison to oldschool cs... only reason people went to csgo... is Valve literally FORCED it with banning events, because noone wanted to playcsgo and all pros kept playing cs classic 2:52 - omfg this gives me flashbacks , i literally have a cup, where i keep my tobacco and lighters in ; )))))) shame... that CS Pro Mode never saw the light of day... (was meant to be a slight upgrade but keeping the physics and overall feel... because CS Source was complete failure....) modern q1 modded client engines are rather good actually.... i played some few years ago, fully enjoyed the simplicity of it.. i personally think Quake2 had the highest skill ceiling

It is literally mind blowing that Quake1 was released in 1996 and Quake3 in 1999. In today's world it is unimaginable that you could make such a monumental jump in graphics in 3 years.
@brokenportals
@brokenportals 9 ай бұрын
That's because we're so far ahead that differences in graphics are pretty marginal nowadays. The main differences though would be in art style. You could take Team Fortress 2 and Breath of the Wild and 100 years later they would still be timeless because of their distinct artstyle.

It was also symbiotic between the gamers & video card industry. In that era, gamers asked for faster cards & the video industry will make them as long as the gamers bought them, which is why a lot of the video cards were designed for gaming, whether primarily from 3dfx, nvidia or ati. That symbiosis pretty much is still in play today.

whilst not as ambitious in scope as UT99 the pure movement mechanics, smoothness and refined engine of idtech3 was second to none. Disagree. The game was heavy. It was disappointment when it came out. The people expected single player adventure. Not arena oriented multiplayer beast. In 99 the multiplay wasn't as common as today. Q3 was the wrong concept in the wrong time. It survived only on the local Lan game clubs.

One small thing I remember my friends and I were impressed with when we first saw Quake 3 were the curves. It is crazy to think that something as simple as a curved archway on a door or the rocket launcher was almost mesmerizing. Such a small graphical advancement by today's standard was a huge leap back then. Nowadays you sometimes can't even tell the difference between a game released in 2013 and 2023 (at least at a glance). Battlefield 4 still looks pretty nice.

Quake champions is quite nice to play, but the crap around it prevents you from just hopping into a game for a quick frag or two, instead you have to wait 5 minutes for it to find a frikkin server. So I've only played that a handful of times. Quake 3 is the ultimate FPS game despite the primitive graphics.

As someone who grew up on Id softwares games, and played a huge amount of quake 1-3 in my teens. I can't believe how the arena shooter has faded away. I personally still prefer quake style of gameplay over all other kind of shooters. It's fast paced. Has fun and cool weapons that each is unique. Often features cool techniques to learn and master, such as plasma climbing in case of quake 3 and rocket jumping. The levels often play with verticality. It's all about controlling the map and it's pickups and reading and predicting your opponents moves. Lastly, the most important thing. Everyone always starts on equal footing. No one has an adavantage over other players because they unlocked something others have not. It is all just skillbased. I really find it weird that younger generations don't find this appealing at all. For me the closest thing right now there is to something that is reminnicent of arena shooters is Overwatch. Where many heroes definitely takes inspiration from old school arena shooters in terms of how they play, and I guess that is the reason why I really like Overwatch.

@Lovelime_ You're very welcome. As for the arena shooter genre, it's something I'd like to touch on. But in short, high ttk, small and chaotic maps along with fast paced movement made it very difficult for casuals to get into, not without spending a considerable amount of time to reach the peak of quakes gameplay. Not to mention the fundamental differences between weapons. In quake, every weapon is unique. But in something like cs or cod, every weapon is fundamentally the same with different variables between them.

True arena FPS is only going to make a comeback if it's built around team play like 3v3,4v4 or 5v5, this includes tailoring that maps for it and such. Majority of players don't like 1v1's since it's higher stress and they can only blame themselves for a loss. There's a reason why all popular shooters are team based.

The initial releases of Q3 however had nothing on Quakeworld's (QW - Q1) movement physics, found jumping for example clunky think it got fixed it with cpm, so unfortunately I kept playing QW :) The addition of the railgun is a big increase in the gameplay depth and skill ceiling. Agreed, for me it is also Quake 3 (with OSP or CPMA) and CS (1.6 that is) at the very top of multiplayer FPS. I've played these two games hundreds of hours on so many LAN parties in the the early 2000s. For Quake 3 in particular it is the timing of items, mainly in duel, and the movement that was so intriguing to me. I probably played as many hours or even more of DeFRaG than I played "normal" Quake 3.

Quakeworld (Internet-based Quake 1) is still the GOAT Arena FPS, and even better than Quake 3 Arena / Quake Live. Whilst agree the pinnacle of the Arena 'scene' was Q3A, at the turn of the millennium, Quakeworld has overall better gameplay, faster movement and tighter controls. Lacking the railgun (at least in default mode, outside mods) means closer more intense in-your-face combat requiring better tracking and projectile aim and use of the rocket/grenade/shotgun/LG and I think the mods and continued development. Practically everything Quake 3 had or did well was taken from Quake 1. No disrespecting Q3 though, it was a stunning game which I played a lot and exceptional technical achievement at the time. But I can't go past Quake 1 as the actual godfather of Internet FPS and the greatest FPS of all time. Its the one I come back to, and still has an amazing scene of dedicated players; who are amazingly, after almost 30 years, still building new maps, still improving and trying to perfect their skills and understanding of the game, still having a blast playing it.

I had the fastest connection possible around 1999. Nopthing has ever been as smooth ever since hahaha. I am amazed it's even playable through a vpn today though so that's also an achievement. I had a lot of fun play testing redesigned maps and preforming trick flips and jumps. I can't expect to be that fast forever. Good video, good times.

I loved different mods, the adrenaline was through the roof. There is not a single game that can do that to me.

For all the people out there that didn't have the pleasure to play in a full Q3 Arena I'm sorry. It was so much fun. I had a dreamcast with the Ethernet adapter which made me just as fast as most pc players and i had the dreamcast m&kb it was great. No rules, could change my name as much as you liked, rocket jumps then switch to the rail gun❤ nothing but love for this great game. Only down side was some pc players would download "cheats" like "quake cop" which was a bot running around killing everyone and making edgy comments after every kill😂 good times.

You should look into movement in Quake 3. Look for tutorials on circle jumps and strafe-jumping. The movement is what makes these games so good they spoil every other game out there. I used to not know how to do that movement myself but I was missing 70% of the fun.
@brokenportals

Yeah it's something I've looked into and have yet to practice. Eventually though I wanna talk more about the defrag scene because I don't see a lot of videos about it besides the defrag movies.
@rolithesecond
@rolithesecond 8 ай бұрын
@@brokenportals yeah zoot used to do quite a lot of defrag stuff, streams of the dfwc, showing off stages etc (which was frowned upon by the dfwc people for some weird reason), but he's got new things in life now. but his channel zlive somewhere has a pretty good tutorial on movement that I also used to practice stuff on some quake live custom map. Also, rapha quite recently had a movement guide in quake champions. it takes quite a bit, I took an hour or two for a while every day while listening to podcasts and stuff while just getting in the muscle memory.

I really truly hope they continue the pattern and give us a Nightdive remaster next year. Quake 3 fucking rules and deserves to have proper widescreen support and modern touches.

Quake Champions is pretty nice to play nowadays, most of the really toxic aholes have left the community, I feel like and the pro level is higher than ever before.

Yeah it was always a really good game, and it did try to shake things up to push things forward. But it wasn't what a lot of those people wanted. They just wanted more q3 but with better graphics pretty much.

Back in high school, me and my friends played the s*** out of quake and quake 2. Quake 2 at that time was my favorite game to date! That being said. When I seen pictures of quake 3 and I was so pumped!! When it came out. I loved it! But where was the campaign? I loved the quake 2 campaign and was hopeful for a continuation... the strog were extremely fascinating! My friends were always on quake 3, I stuck with quake 2.

Quake Champions is awesome, and people still play ut4 despite Epic's efforts. I play Quake Live everyday. UT3 is very underrated as a multiplayer shooter imo.

Agreed. I'm not too big on the Gears of War paintjob but gameplay wise it's just as good as any other UT game.

Interesting how many adults have a serious engagement with essentially a recreational medium. I think it's a continuation of the comic book forums (letters to the editor), which used to contain long treatises about every aspect of the comic book stories and characters. It's not for me to judge, but I moved on from comic books in late adolescence to involve myself with more concrete endeavors.

I've always been more into Unreal but I think it's fair to say that Quake had the bigger impact. Also Quake was generally treated better as a series compared to Unreal as it was more consistent in quality. And now Epic removed all Unreals from everywhere, as if they're ashamed of their existence.

i am 41 years old and i still play open arena, an open source clone based on the q3 engine every now and then. the good thing about these kind of game is that you can hop in for a few rounds and leave after a round or two. you dont really have a big time commitment. quake live is still popular today.
