Verlander, Scherzer, Price, Sanchez, Porcello. The 2014 Tigers rotation has 8 Cy Youngs, 5 ERA titles, A Triple Crown, An MVP, and lead the league in Strikeouts 9 times. As a Tigers fan I still want to vomit thinking about how we wasted this.

This video perfectly encapsulates the 2012-2014 Detroit Tigers except that they had even more pitching, one of the top offenses in the league, but the bullpen blew games and the bats went quiet when we needed them the most (the 2012 WS sweep and 2014 ALDS). The 2013 rotation is arguably one of the best rotations assembled for a team ever and it can be argued that it got even better in 2014.

I’m similarly sad as a former Cleveland Indians fan. I didn’t spend 35 years (I’m 40) idolizing the Guardians; I don’t know who that team is so I stopped caring. The Tribe getting reverse swept in the WS against the Cubs was the last thing I ever watched on TV with my dad (RIP) before he passed. Born in 1950, he never saw his beloved Browns win a Super Bowl nor the Indians win the World Series. Cleveland’s teams that lost two WS in the ‘90s were legendary teams. Vizquel, Thome, Belle, Baerga, my personal childhood idol Kenny Lofton… later on that team fielded some of the best players of the last few decades. Sizemore was a HOF talent whose reckless outfield play cut his career short. So many Cy Young winners were of course traded away. But while most baseball fans remember Sabathia as the long-time Yankees ace, he was perhaps the best pitcher ever to take the mound for the Tribe in my lifetime. So many talented rosters, magical seasons, elite pitchers, bats, fielders… and nothing to show for it. And now they’re gone forever. I dunno who these Guardian people are but they don’t mean a dang thing to me.

I think in hindsight winning in Citizens Bank Park with your pitching staff is hard. That’s not what the ‘08 team was about. Obviously Hamels was great, Brett Myers was okay, and Moyer was an aging wonder. But really it was having a great bullpen of Madson and Lidge combined with the 1-6 being gangbusters.

Chicago's big four of Mark Buehrle, Freddy Garcia, Jose Contreras and Jon Garland was an absolute force in the 2005 playoffs. They all had ERAs between 3 and 4 in the regular season, which is good, but turned it up in the playoffs where they combined for a sub-3 ERA. 2005 was the year I, a Houstonian, got into baseball. Them getting swept in the World Series completely broke seven-year-old me. Looking back now, with how we’ve been absolutely spoiled with playoff riches the past eight years, I can look back and appreciate this a lot more. I’m mostly satisfied that Biggio and Bagwell even made the Fall Classic at all considering how many of the greats never even did that, and I’m also really happy for the Southside finally breaking the Black Sox Curse as doing so was simply an important moment for baseball, no other way around it.

Edit: the rest of the league was doing it too, multiple current and former MLB players are on record saying it wasn’t only the Astros. @@notsauer I'm aware that the players union is quite strong and makes it difficult for the league to punish players, and that the team fine was the maximum allowed per the rules. I didn't bring up those points for that very reason. Nonetheless the fact that he didn't take the "pieces of metal" as he puts it shows he went easy on the Astros. Literally every team would take the trade of a WS title in exchange for $5 million, a couple draft picks, and some bad press, don't act like that was much a punishment at all. Congrats on winning the division this year by the way.

Fact is, George Steinbrenner had oddly decided that he didn't want Pettitte back, and offered less than Houston did. George always had a thing about knocking his own players while coveting everyone else's. True to form, he broke the bank in order to bring Pettitte back to New York after the three year Houston contract expired.

I would like to see _any_ evidence - I mean anything at all - that Pettitte's decision to sign with Houston was to save his marriage, or that Willie going to the Mets had anything to do with his own marriage. I am a baseball historian as a hobby, and have never heard either claim, nor can I find a single reference to either claim online.

At one point, peak Johan Santana and Francisco Liriano was a beast one-two starting pitching combination along with a prime Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau on offense. The Twins odds to ring was something like 25-1 and I put money on it. Sadly, both pitchers were derailed by injuries and I never got to see if it would come to fruition with them being healthy.

All 5 members of the 2011 Phillies rotation posted an ERA+ over 100, as did their top 5 arms out of the bullpen. The rotation of Roy Halladay (163), Cliff Lee (160), Cole Hamels (137), Roy Oswalt (104), and Vance Worley (127) set the table. Coming out of the bullpen were Kyle Kendrick (119), Michael Stutes (106), Antonio Bastardo (146), and David Herndon (116), with Ryan Madson closing (162) after Brad Lidge went on the disabled list. Kyle Kendrick was also the Phillies' spot starter, starting 15 games during the season (mainly as a fill-in for Oswalt when he injured his back). The Phillies lost the NLDS 3-2 to the eventual champion Cardinals. "1-bloody-nil" to those that know.

Such an incredible rotation, but maybe the most underrated part of these teams was Lance Berkman. He slashed .300/.413/.559 with a .972 OPS and 148 OPS+ in the 2000s. In the 2004 and 2005 playoffs, he slashed an absurd .340/.453/.617 with a 1.070. In that 2005 World Series, he slashed .385/.526/.538 with 6 RBIs, becoming the 4th player to have the highest WPA and cWPA in a World Series despite not winning. All in all, he was an incredible force for an otherwise-mediocre Astros offense

For additional details regarding @2:12 I watched that Wagner postgame interview in 2003, he was disappointed that the Astros didn’t sign that year’s 18-game winner SP Woody Williams. So sad the Astros’ front office got butt-hurt from this & traded Wagner for 3 Phillies subpar players. Wagner, after all, headed that 2003 bullpen, which no-hit the Yankees @ Yankee Stadium (1st time since 1958). They wouldnt have the same bullpen woes in the 2004 postseason.
