Mysterio says the green mist was to prepare everyone in New York for symbiosis with those purple symbiotes. So it wasn't poisonous. Don't know why they needed preparation since symbiotes typically just merge with their hosts, but whatever, it was an in-story explanation for the game's low draw-distance. By the way, I was always concerned that Spider-Man left Cletus Kassidy to die while on the run from Monster-Ock. The Carnage symbiote saved Doc Ock from the one explosion, but Cletus was left unconscious and naked right in the core of the exploding underwater lair. And yeah, Monster-Ock scared the shit out of me back in the day, especially when he catches you. I loved the hell out of this game. Influenced heavily by my favorite Spider-Man cartoon, and it got me back into Spider-Man during the slump between said cartoon's finale and the Raimi movies. And the soundtrack was spot-on! Composed by Tommy Tallarico. Didn't care much for the second game. I think the first one used up too many of the best villains.

Dude I played this on the PC. It was one of my favorited along with Web of Shadows! I still remember vividly Venom being a dork and his Surfing the web mantra. And that final boss run was so hard for me as a kid.

Responding to your questions: 1. Otto: Otto is supposed to have reformed, the game mentions it in his character bio screen. 2. The gas: The gas is not poisonous, it's supposed to prepare the people of the city for symbiosis. I have no idea what that means lol. The gas doesn't kill you, it's just game's limited capabilities. 3. JJ calling Peter instead of 911: I think he knew Peter would "call" Spider-Man. He was just too prideful to admit it. 4. Scorpion lore: Mac Gargan was a detective hired by JJ to find out how Peter took such great pictures of Spider-Man. Unfortunately for him, Peter's Spider-Sense prevented that. After that, JJ got him to be part of an experiment to give Gargan superpowers using a suit making him Scorpion. Gargan tries to kill Spider-Man, fails and afterwards, finds out that the suit can't be removed. So he blames JJ for his condition and that's where the mission comes from.

I hope when the Venom 2 Trailer comes out we are teased about him getting the spider symbol on his chest

In the comics, Mac Gargan was hired by Jameson to follow Peter to figure out how he gets pictures of Spider-Man so easily. Jameson volunteered Gargan for an experiment on artificial mutations to turn him into the Scorpion to act as an Anti-Spider-Man, the experiment made him stronger but had some side effects on his mental stability and becoming more villainous as he got stronger

I have this game and beaten it many times. Who here still have sweaty palms from trying to escape Carnage Doc Oct from the underwater base.

As for Mary Jane existing to be kidnapped in the comics. At least back in the 80's and early 90's, when I was reading the comics on the regular, she rarely was kidnapped. She kind of defied the trope of the hero's loved one being kidnapped a lot.

I agree, it's still my absolute favorite Spidey game ever. I also love its SUPER underrated and underappreciated sequel, Enter Electro. I loved how it picks up immediately after the 1st part and you have to contend with an all new set of villains in Shocker, Sandman, Beetle, Hammerhead, Lizard and Electro. Vicarious Visions did a great job with it.

Man this game was so sick, my buddy got it on 64 and we COULD NOT beat the bomb in the bank for forever long! I also got the demo for my computer from a Kellogg’s box and played that thing constantly until I saved up enough money to buy it for myself!

In the cutscene at the end with the villians in there jail cell, Mysterio has a picture of Sable on his wall with a Mysterio style helmet imposed on her head.

I had a PC copy of this game that would always glitch right at the Scorpion part, Spidey wouldn't appear in the cutscene (but JJJ and Scorpion reacted like he had) and when the actual gameplay started I was just falling into the green mist

So, the reason Venom is crazy is because the symbiote briefly atatched to Deadpool, hence why Venom talks like Deadpool.

@veeinfuso i'm not sure if i remember right but i think JJ hired scorpion before he became scorpion to capture/take out spiderman due to him(spidey) being a criminal in JJ's mind for just wearing a mask, and one of the conditions of the job was wearing the scorpion suit to give him a fighting chance against spidey, but some complication i believe to do with the suit and a variant of the green goblin gas which left him stuck in the suit and even able to transform somewhat when enraged and become stronger more agile and aggressive.... this took place in spider man the animated series on fox kids... again if i remember right... stay safe bro and keep up the great work, bless.

I used to play this on my old PC and this cutscene at 6:35 wouldn't load properly most times. It would loop between the beginning of the cutscene and end with Spidey falling to his death.

Undoubtedly the best Spider-Man game ever. Mine and my friends' favorite in fourth grade on PS1. Around the time when TAS was still rerunning in my country, which just added to the awesomeness of it all. One of my favorite PS1 games.

I don't remember specifically, but Jameson commissioned the creation of Scorpion's suit,and hired Gargan to wear it and confront Spider-Man. It was an accident that Gargan became infused with it,and he has blamed Jameson ever since. This origin story was told in a very early issue of Amazing Spider-Man. Issue #11 or 12, I think. Jameson makes a brief reference to it in his podcast in the PS4 Spider-Man game.
