Can heroes lie? What does it mean to become a "brave warrior of the sea"? What makes Usopp such an unlikely, but compelling character? And is his story ultimately an inversion of Montblanc Noland's?
Join me today for a "short" talk about tall tales, brave warriors, and a storybook that doesn't exist yet - all centered around a hero named Usopp.

@CrysasDan 9 ай бұрын
@@Deeper489 basically. Usopp's biggest problem is that he doubts himself. Usopp has done so many brave things, id actually argue that he's the bravest character in one piece. the problem is that he lets his fear control him in the moment and allows doubt, in himself, to turn what should be moments of action into moments of hesitation.

what i love about usopp is techincally his dream has come true already. being brave does not mean being without fear. it means that despite that fear you face the situation ahead of you. his story isn't over but usopp is already a brave warrior of the sea. within the definition of brave it says to show courage. 'brave: adjective, ready to face and endure danger or pain; showing courage." Courage is "the ability to do something that frightens one." Usopp is a brave warrior of the sea.

That's a valid take! In my personal opinion, his title is contingent on the recognition he gets from others. In the beginning of the story he's famous in his home town for lying, so to become a brave warrior of the sea when he returns home, I believe he needs to be famous for being brave/heroic rather than for lying. He may have the courage necessary to face danger, but he's had that ever since the day he left his home for the Grand Line. So if that were the only factor, then his goal would have no true purpose. That being said, I do think he has a lot of the qualities he needs to become a hero already, he just has to tap into them.

I dont think he is just there yet. At least in his own mind. He conquers his fear time and time again. Dude faced Kizaru for sake of Zoro, but then again he shakes in face of much lesser danger. He ran away from Trebol and Sugar for example. He still thinks and feel like a coward. Fear dictates a lot of his actions and he is easy to lose cool when facing it. He doesnt have to be Luffy or Zoro when it comes to fear, but he needs to get to at least Franky or Brook level. Usopp was ready to face an entire pirate crew alone on Syrup village arc, one could argue that he was brave to begin with, but when things dont have to get crazy dire to bring this side of him out, I think he could say he achieved his goal

Usopp is really a great inventor. True, the things he designs are mostly for the purpose of delivering gags (the clima-tact was literally filled with about 90% party tricks as a meta joke), but they really have come in clutch on many occasions. Franky easily outdoes him obviously, but then of course Franky *is* a once in a generation talent. But I don’t see how anyone else on the crew could have dealt with Sugar from Usopp’s position. There are still clear, definable strengths that he has over his friends.

I love the fact that after the events of Wano even chopper beats out Usopp, but his dream isn't to be the strongest or most powerful, his dream is to be able to conquer his fears and become brave and we see him doing that more and more, he's now casually getting into fights that he would never think of back in the Grand line, not to mention the east blue, so I'm excited to see where he goes now that he gets to claim that he's a part of the crew that took down two emperors, I'm hoping he doesn't become all stoic and Zoro-esque by the end of the series, I hope you still keeps that slapstick with chopper and Luffy and has that jovial younger attitude, but his character growth is definitely some of my favorite by far because when I was younger I had a lot of social anxiety and I could barely hold a conversation with someone my age and eventually I realized how goofy that fear was and started getting older and started maturing more and realized how easy it is to hold a conversation and become brave in those situations so I find a bit of myself in Usopp

Based on everything you laid out I think Usopp’s climax would come from lies about his skill, but the lie actually gets him in an argument with a giant who calls his bluff and Usopp is forced to back up his talk to defend his honor as a brave. Oda could add impact and tension to this moment easily especially if he doesn’t make his lie come true the crew could be in danger or if it’s connected to a final power up for him. Like a dangerous trial he has to overcome after talking out his backside and betting “anything” that he could best the record of said trial. Either way loved this video, I think Usopp is underrated. This is the Usopp video we needed! Only you would have clicked on Sogeking's theme song = Kamen Rider's. Everything you said here was right on point. All the SHs are going to be legends, and Usopp will be one of the most colorful. I agree there's going to be a sniper challenge at some point; what I think/hope we'll see was foreshadowed by Igaram when he warned Vivi that she could be shot by someone from a great distance. We saw Van Auger shoot down those seagulls from miles off Jaya. If Van Auger takes aim at Vivi in the last battle, Usopp's greatest sniper feat would be shooting that fatal bullet out of the air before it hits Vivi. And the great irony of it? Only Usopp would ever know he had done it.

I like to imagine post series Usopp will return to Syrup Village and they will ask him where he disappeared to for a few years. He will obviously smugly tell them he travelled the grand line on the pirate kings crew. That he has a bounty worth hundreds of millions. That he is a brave warrior of the sea. Only to have them all laugh and go "Oh that's classic Usopp" and not believe him when he for the first time told them the truth. Then I imagine he will just laugh and go "You got me," while winking at Kaya and the kids who know he was telling the truth.

If you already said this, forgive me. But I think a key factor in Usopp's transition into his dream is when his virtue of bravery ceases to be vanity. He wants to be a brave warrior not because he can not be anything else, but because he thinks that's what he should be. His heart isn't in it yet. Like a king who wants peace because his followers will revere him highly, instead of wanting safety and security for his people. When Usopp stops trying and simply is, is when he will achieve his dream in my opinion.

Usopp’s battle vs Perona is one of the greatest battles in all of One Piece. I think Thriller Bark in itself is vastly underrated and that fight is at the forefront of why this arc is so highly underrated. To start off, I think Usopp’s fight in particular is not only underrated, but it’s one of my favorite One Piece experiences. Usopp does such a great job of using his limited resources to mass effect pulling out a win vs an opponent who is vastly superior to him in almost all areas save for creativity. And it’s this creativity where we see Usopp shine. His absolute fear drives him to his peak much like the power of friendship drives Luffy. When he pounded down with Usopp’s Hammer I cheered loud enough to frighten my dog. It was such a kick ass moment. And the bugs was such an ironic touch using fear in the house of fear. And it is this irony that makes all of Thriller Bark shine. There are so many great moments where Oda uses pop cultural references to create gags that make me laugh as hard as any gag in One Piece. For instance when the zombies broke out into the spontaneous flash dance had me howling. And when the cowardly trio hid inside of Kamusey and he couldn’t tell Perona because she wouldn’t let him talk because she hated the sound of his voice. Brilliant. And how Usopp wasn’t affected by Perona’s ghosts because he was already at his lowest is not only hilarious but it also shows us what Usopp has to deal with during every Straw Hat mission. I know one of the reasons why people dislike this arc so much is due Sanji’s pervy declaration in his fight vs Absolam but I think most have it wrong. Sanji doesn’t want to actually do these things, it’s just his fantasy. Dark and gross as it is it’s only a fantasy. And for Sanji to see this fantasy in real life disturbs him in numerous ways, mainly it taints his own fantasy and it violates his nakama. So he gets more angry than we’ve seen him prior and he makes Absolam pay the price. I mean, come on, let’s give our curly eyebrowed friend the benefit of the doubt. So yeah, this arc is awesome. It’s funny. It has great fights. It introduces Kuma, shows us that nothing happened, and finishes with Brook’s tale of Laboon. What more do you want?

The parallels to Don Quixote are always a bit uncomfortable, because the intent in which this character was written, the goal of the author back then, was to make fun of "nerds" (or the equivalent at that time), people who got so caught up in their books and fantasy that they lost touch with reality. Whereas One Piece in general and Usopp in particular are all about the importance of not limiting yourself to "reality", about how "reality" can be improved upon, but only if people are allowed to dream.

I honestly have grown to love Ussop since water 7 conflict. To me, he is already a brave warrior of the sea but he himself has such little belief in his own capabilities. I remember that scene in the pre time slip where Nani asked Usopp to make her a weapon because she and he were not monsters like the others, they’re just normal people. However, as was shown in Dressrosa where Usopp potentially awakened his observation haki, he has huge potential to be great, if only he believed in himself. When I considered Usopps character, I see myself and how much self doubt I’ve had to overcome and still do. Like him, I never thought I’d amount to anything but always dreamed of being great. I’ve made a lot of progress just like Usopp but the fear of hope is what sets me back. I think Usopps character is going to grow massively during the Elbaph arch and I think Loki might be a big factor in this.

I think that Usopp may not even need to prove himself as he might already be revered by the Giants and we don't know for sure yet. It isn't only Broggy and Dorry. There is also the 2 giants freed from Ennys Lobby and there is the Giant from the Strawhat fleet that might already has spread legends of how Usopp freed an entire country in Dressrosa. I wouldn't be surprised if they arrive in Elbaf only to see a giant statue of Usopp with the words "Brave Warrior of the Sea" in it.

Honestly, Luffy vs Shanks would very likely be a super wholesome fight. Not a fight to save the world, not a fight to save a nation or a friend. Just a friendly duel between Luffy and Shanks, for Shanks to see first hand how much Luffy has grown

For anyone who hadn't seen Saint Jay's "One Piece is Real", in his edition with recon they basicly point out how Jaya as an arc is the embodiment of "art imitates life" with Oda just off his biggest moment up to that point(Enis Lobby), his first thought was ti write an arc about dreams and imbewing how he felt at that time irl into the story. All that to say that I personally believe all the arcs where Usopp gets a big "Usopp Moment" are parts where all the themes of his charecter perfectly tie into and enhance the plot and themes of the arc. The perfect examples are W7/Enies Lobby, Skypia, and a little in Skypiea arguably, and ESPECIALLY Dressrosa. It's actually amazing how much this video recontextualizes the way Oda was able to tie all these things together. I could literally rant about just how amazing all the connections Oda makes are perfect in terms of just 1 arc based soley off this video, which goes to show how masterful Oda is when his Pen on Mera-Ifrit timing.

All that and I completely forgot to get to the main takeaway I got from this video. Usopp as a character conveys how we all try to make a name for ourselves, go down in history and live on for future generations through the medium of storytelling. TLDR Usopp is essentially a meta version of Inherited Will through storytelling which is exactly what Oda does as a living and he LOVES it.

He is also one of the only 5 Straw Hats that can actually use Haki. Sure he can only use the color of observation and learned it in Dressrosa. But nonetheless the fact that he can use it and not the other members and members like Brook who has spent years sailing and figthing says alot.

Usopp has always been my favorite one piece character, and one thing he doesn't get enough credit for in my opinion is, when the shit hits the fan and the situation is very serious/ dire, usopp mans up and plants his shaking feet firmly in the dirt to stand up for what he believes in

I think Elbaph will be Usopp's arc like how I think egghead will ultimately be Franky's arc after watching your video. He will heroically save Elbaph and be recognized for it using his marksman skills like you said. I also think he will be the one to lead the straw hat fleet in the final war. It would be a surreal tale for him to star in. "The leader of the warriors in the war to free the world of oppression". That would be epic I think.

Considering the theory that Usopp's lies become true as the story progresses, I am genuinely convinced Usopp is going to awaken to his Conquerer's haki at some point. He claimed to posess CoC during the Raid on onigashima, and I genuinely feel like it could be true. We already know Usopp posesses quite powerful haki, like what he showed in Dressrosa, so I believe it's not really that much of a stretch, especially considering the fact that he's shown himself to posess the disposition and determination of a conqueror when push comes to shove.

THIS IS WHY USSOP WAS AND IS MY FAVORITE OF THE STRAWHATS!!!!! He's a coward when facing his opponents, and kinda fails upwards, and i feel soooooo identified by that. That's why my favourite fight of the series is ussop vs luffy. Because he didn't care that he was his captain and he couldn't win, he went and gave a batman-like performace, showing his creativity on a battlefield. And that's why these last couple of arcs I'm kinda disappointed that ussop couldn't have a big achievement on the onigashima battle.

Real talk. I wish I was more like Usopp. Man knows where he is on the power scaling totem pole and he faces the insanity anyway. Low key, he's the bravest character on the whole ship (if not the show). Sure he complains, sure his knees shake, but bravery isn't the absence of fear. Its being there inspite of how much you just want to run away.

I hope with all my heart that if we get a full Elbaf arc it will heavily focus on Ussop, just like Whole Cake was for Sanji. He really deserves it, by this point he achieved his dream, he is a brave warrior, but thats something he has to believe himself, until Ussop can himself believe his own lies his dream wont be achieved and I love that. Also if he actually gets conqueres it will be so funny lmao

Amazing video, as always! I really do feel like a proud parent whenever I think of Usopp, especially as a long ass time reader 😂 But seriously, watching him slowly but surely becoming the brave warrior he dreams to be, making an impact on the people around him, particularly when he's not trying to be "brave" and just being his kind, anxious, and creative self, is making my heart swell with pride and joy. 10/10 character imo and will forever root for him. P.s. Usopp mastering botany makes complete sense to me as well. He's always been handy and opted to using unconventional methods to fight. He seems quite confident being in the wilderness too (compared to Sanji or Nami, for example). Pretty sure he uses peppers and spices as weapons at some point too lmaoo

That's weird. Usopp has always been my favorite character because he's more relatable. I don't really focus much on the escapism aspect of storytelling though. In my book good fiction should be a commentary of real-life experiences.

Ok I must say, for Oda to take Don Quixote, and make 2 different charecters(one of who shares his name) parallel him in different ways, shows how Usopp might be his self insert(if we ignore shanks and gear 5). I believe the themes of the story are literlly being shown through Usopps mere existance and it just goes unnoticed due to *agendas*. You said "It's how One Piece even came to be" and that statement has multiple layers of truth to it(Hidden can really rap, that entandre got me). Not only is it literally how Oda even came up with the idea of the story(due to mainly Vicky the Viking, Toriyama, and well literally every source of literature out there at this point) but literally on the first page Roger says it and so does the chapter title. The ability to suspend your disbelief and dream is literally the reason the world is where it is right now. Man Oda is such a GOAT! Even when he's wack he's still spitting!

Only halfway through so I haven't seen your conclusion to all this which will probably be your original input to it but up till now it's a lot that was speculated and theorized for years now and I absolutely love all the theories... I personally always felt like oda WANTS usopps story to end in a sad but heroic way, that usopp (the boy who was always the embodiment around fear of death) will somehow die a martyr death to directly save his crews life (and therefore the whole world)... And I think he'll do it by lying and in the end he'll be so brave and so happy to give his life that he basically fulfills his dream like he could've never in any other way... He'll probably act cry while dying but be as brave as no one before him
