The bishop sacrifice on h7 (or h2), also known as the Greek gift sacrifice, is one of the most thematic sacrifices in all of chess.
Timeo danaos et dona ferentes, Aeneid (II, 49)
(Beware of Greeks bearing gifts)
When it comes to learning and improving your middle game play, pattern recognition is one of the best ways to do that. That is why I will try to cover as many thematic attacking, tactical or positional patterns in this series, starting with the Greek Gift!
The Greek Gift is a nickname given to the sacrifices on h7/h2. The name should imply that the bishop should not be taken (even though you lose all the same if you don’t), referring to the episode from the Trojan war, in which the Greek army was hidden in the horse the Greeks gave Trojans as a peaceful gift. The sacrifice is often just as cunning and as subtle, hence the name.
It most often includes the cooperation of bishop, knight and queen, but can often work without the knight, which can be replaced by a rook or the second bishop entering the battlefield.
During real games, the situation will not be as simple as in the textbook examples in which the perfect position is set up. You will have to calculate the consequences of Bxh7 in depth, because (as seen in the example where Yasser Seirawan magnificently survived the gift) you could be in trouble and end up a piece down for not much otherwise.
Once you know the pattern, make sure you don’t end up wasting too much time during real games trying to get it to work. I have done that once, and all I got was 45 minutes less on the clock. Accept the fact that, even though it might look tempting and good, sometimes it just doesn’t work!

4:42 Qxf7-h5-h8xg7# 7:14 0-0-0 probably best but I was attracted to h5 with the idea of Nf7+ then Qg6 and Ng5...black prob must give up the Queen but gets some material back. 11:49 ...Bf3 is a nice move. It's more of a blockading sacrifice, not allowing white to move the f2 pawn to create luft and the Queen defends on the 2nd rank 13:14 Nice example of double bishop sac, Lasker vs Bauer of course the most famous example of same pattern.

Thanks for the input:) Yeah, Bf3 was a great move. I think that you don't see very often. In fact, this is the only game I could find with the queenside fianchetto and the Greek gift.

Ciao Stjepan very nice video ! I think yours is one of the best channels for completeness and detail. I just wanted to point out that the bishop sacrifice has nothing to do with the trojan horse (Greece), but it is a combination that was first played in 1620 by the Italian chess player Gioacchino Greco (Greco is a surname). The surname Greco in the english world has been translated into greek, but it has nothing to do with it. Ciao !

Maybe someone already commented this, but at 11:08, the move Rf6 after Kxg2 is actually a losing move for black (engine gives +10). The point is that it gives white time to give the king a getaway route, by playing Rg1, vacating the f1 square. After white takes the bishop on g2, black can instead play Qg4+, forcing the king to the h-file, at which point black has time for the rooklift and mate is unstoppable.

4:42 This is incorrect as Qh7+ followed by Qh8+ is not a checkmate! The king has Ke7 escape square. The correct moves after Re8 are: Qf7+!, Qh5+, Qh7+, Qh8+, Qg7+, Qf7#. The pawn on e5 covers all the escape squares.
@madhavsanap6690
@madhavsanap6690 4 жыл бұрын
Great video. About this video : You should add the mating sequence for the attacker. That is missing. If the defender moves the rook then the f2/f7 pawn should be taken and not the h1/hi pawn. That sequence is completely missing.

I agree At 4:40 with Re8 there is a mistake: if rook e8 then Qh7+ Kf8 then Q h8+ and K e7 !!! The king escape !!! because the pawn in f7 is protecting the king. you must take it before doing the mating patern !!! if rook e8 you must play Qxf7 !! then K h8 or h7 then Qh5+ !!! Kg8 and here it works ^^ Qh7+ Kf8 Qh8+ Ke7 and Qxg7# ^^

4:43 what is he talking about queen H7 and H8 checkmate? The king can go to E7. If the rook moves then the queen takes on F7 first and it still leads to checkmate.

He doesn't explain it, but if Kg7, Qh5, Re8 is still mate, because of Qxf7 leading to mate.
@egorsitnikov8767

There is one more condition to execute this attack: the Black's LSB must not have access to a2-h7 diagonal. Otherwise after White's LSB sacrifice and Ng5 the king can safely go to g8 and flex on White's disappointment. Because after Qh5 there is e. g. Bf5 and h7 is now protected by two Black's pieces, and White doesn't have a LSB anymore. White still can try to get a rook on h-file, but Black usually has a plenty of time to mitigate the threat.

Hello Eetu. Good job at the tournament! I'm glad you want to take chess seriously! My first piece of advice would be that you build an opening repertoire. Choose one reply to d4, one to e4, one to c4, one to f3, and choose what you play with white (if you choose e4, then find one move against e6, one against, c6, d6, e5, d5, c5 etc.). The second thing you have to do is learn king and pawn and king rook and pawn endgames. Learn opposition, the Lucena position, rule of the square etc. All of these will be in any endgame book. This way you will have reduced the chances of losing in the opening or in the endgame significantly. Thirdly, I would recommend Yusupov's book, as Michael said. Along with it you should read Kotov's How to think like a grandmaster and John Nunn's Understanding chess middlegames. Lastly, work on your tactics. Solve problems online as much as possible. That will do for stage one. And, yeah, study Dvoretsky's endgames and My System by Nimzowitsch. Good luck!

I'm not an experienced chess player so I apologize if this is a stupid question, but in the Quinteros Seirawan game after black plays f4 why does white not respond with qh4? Wouldn't that protect the knight and keep the option to discover check and take blacks queen with ne6? What am I missing that made qh3 the better play?

I was asking myself the same so I scanned this position into Chessify which gave me this: I think Stjepan means taking with the king would be suicide. Because after ...Kxg6 then Qd3+ and from there Stockfish12 shows a mate in #10 moves. HOWEVER, back to your question, you could take the pawn with ...fxg6 (which Stockfish shows as the best move) and then Ng5+... delievers check again. From here, there is either the worst move ...Kh6 which gives a mate in #2. Or three other possible moves which all result in black loosing its queen.

chess is a very sick game. Two people trying to squeeze the literal life out of one another, ruthlessly. It brings out the worst of human nature: namely wanting to tear the other person apart and gouge their eyes out and taking one of the eyes and smashing and stomping that eye into a flat raw sac, while shoving the other eye up the other guys throat and smashing the guy's mouth and jaw repeatedly with one's elbow. As I say: it literally brings out the worst in human nature. A nasty game. Absolutely the sickest human invention of all times. Very worst of human invention. I mean, we are capable of such beauty and creativity. Yet' we come up with games that draws us to want to disembowel one another. Just sad. .
