Finding candidate moves quickly and efficiently is something every player needs to master.
I have divided the process of choosing candidate moves into five simple steps, each of which is designed to limit the chances of making a mistake and missing a defensive or attacking move which might decide the game.
Finding moves you are going to be calculating is the first step. What follows is calculation. Here is the video on how to calculate variations correctly to follow up on the lesson: • How to Calculate Varia...
Choosing candidate moves in five stages:
1. Are any defenses needed?
This step is crucial, and that’s why it should be done before anything else. You need to know if your position is in danger. What was your opponent’s last move? Is he threatening anything with it? If you just blindly follow your own ideas, you will often overlook the threat your opponent is posing and blunder. I do this step by playing the worst move I could find in my head and trying to think of ways in which my opponent could punish that. If I can’t find any, I will conclude that my position is in under no immediate danger and that no defensive measures need to be undertaken.
2. Do I have useful checks, captures, or forcing moves?
Look for the aggressive moves first. Moves you opponent will have to react to. Start with checks because they are often simplest to find and to calculate. Don’t miss out on the absurd ones either. There will often be a tactical gem hidden under a seemingly bad move. Same goes for captures and forcing moves. Find them all and discard one by one if they are bad. The ones remaining will be your candidate moves!
3. Do I (or does my opponent) have bad pieces?
Find bad and useless pieces. Find candidate moves which improve them. This will be the most common type of candidate move you consider. The game is long and complex, and there will seldom be attacking moves, while slow, positional improvement will be present at every move.
4. Can I provoke weaknesses?
Take the same approach as with step three. Can you permanently damage your opponent’s position? Look for static weaknesses you could provoke, create or exmploit.
5. How many candidates are there?
List them and do a final check before moving on to calculation.

Pushing b5 needlessly weakens Black's c6 pawn (and his pawn structure) while leaving a gaping hole through c5 and b6. Plus, it turns c6 into a target for White to put pressure on. If White follows with 2. a4, Black pawn structure on the Queen side is now under attack: 2. ... bxa4 Rxa4 activates White's rook on the Queen side and removes Black's influence over c4; 2... b4? wastes a move and defeats the whole point of playing b5, since Nc4 now becomes available again. So only 2... a6 would be playable as a defending move, then 3. axb5 and the now weak c6 pawn is a target with White now a pawn up (you can't retake with... axb5, which immediately loses the hanging Black Rook). Only the Queen may be used to defend, but now Black is under pressure to defend, White has seized the initiative, and Black's is distracted away from the main point of his opening : pushing e5 or c5.

Your thought process of discarding "before" going into "calculation" (eg: the tactic you explained at the 9 minute mark (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9h1pMuZvr-zooU.html) is what I think of as "calculation". Am I missing something or am I just weak?

I think Bxe7 is the top move, because it removes the Knight on e7 which can jump to f5, at the same time repelling the attack from the c4 knight to the bishop on a3. And after Bxe7 and Kxe7, now you can play Qh7 and Rg3, and play a comfortable position as white here.

So, I saw the Nxc4 and the Qh7 plan, but was contemplating between the Nxc4 plan or pledging never to play Nxc4 (because then the rook will be weak) and starting with g4 with the idea that there is no Nf5 making Qh7 a more serious option. Would this be better or am I weakening my position too much and just begging for something crazy like f5 to appear on the board?
@ajrowe5845
@ajrowe5845 5 жыл бұрын
Don't have to calculate Qh7 because you calculated 6 moves ahead and found you can get your queen trapped. So as long as you can calculate 6 or so moves ahead you don't have to calculate it. 🤣

Can you please do a video on ZWISCHENZÜGE? Both spotting and avoiding them. I am intermediate and sometimes in a seemingly strong position, I get bloodthirsty and fall prey to Zwischenzüge. It makes me second guess in situations where I really do have a winning position, and I sometimes draw winning games to avoid imaginary threats. Vielen Dank!!! I watched the Jennifer Shahade video and it's 50 minutes of her being condescending to her class and poorly explaining the mechanics of intermezzo and also boring as hell. Your approach is fun and infinitely more instructive.

About the second position. I think black has to play e5 now. But I lack the tactical ability to foresee all the different threats that come after white plays Ne4. I mean there is white ideas like Bxh6, NxF6 followed by Bxh6, Nxf6 followed by Bh7 and on top of all that there is Nxd6 and if exd there is more coming after 0-0. Like I said, I think over the board I would think "okay I don't know what is going to happen, but I know that I need to play e5 now." If I lose oh well but I am not for one minute letting those positions I imagine after Nc4 arrives on the board.

How did you arrive at these questions? It seems so random to me. Working through it may take 5 minutes per move on its own, and you want to make your moves within 5 minutes. It is also too many questions to realistically remember. Your method has no application. You'll have plenty of positions with 4+ checks, 4+ captures, and 5-10 forcing moves and the method you propose breaks down because there is no logical ordering to it. You should probably rethink it all.
@HangingPawns
@HangingPawns 5 жыл бұрын
I know it can be time consuming to go over all of the questions on every move. But, as you mentioned, critical positions will have tons of checks, captures and forcing moves, and I find this method to be helpful in a sense that you miss far less then usual. This is only my thinking and I didn't say that it's optimal, but I use it and it has helped me improve and miss less good moves and blunder less often.

@blacklivesmatter6098

@@udaytejsingh3998 It is random because it is not arrived at logically through any verifiable process. It is just some random ideas he has hashed together. He is 1900, not a titled player, so I don't know why he has such high confidence about some ideas he made up that didn't even make him good yet. If his thought process was better, of course he'd be 2200 already.

@@blacklivesmatter6098 what is your rating to judge this? These are the factors that a master evaluates. I have spoken to several GMs about games, including those in which I've beaten them by using this very thought process. Unless you are a titled player or have a FIDE rating higher than this, you can be sure nobody else will give a rat's fart about your opinion. His playing strength would be much higher as he would improved during the lockdown. How come someone so smart as yourself didn't guess this? Also, 1900 is by no means a bad rating.
