Stephen King has said that John Coffey’s initials were J.C. for a reason… At one point in the movie a character says of Coffey that there are no records of him anywhere, “It’s like he just dropped down out of the sky.”

That one line when John looks at the stars “Cassie, the lady in the rocking chair” Is a reference to the Constellation “Cassiopeia” that’s mythology is of a lady in chair. It’s significant because that means John has knowledge of constellations. Ship navigator would use the constellations at night to navigate what direction they’re going. John knowing the constellations could be a hint to how old he is, possibly a slave from an early slave vessel, perhaps even the navigator of a ship.. so by the 1930s he could’ve been hundreds of years old...

Rats and mice normally live only about 2-3 years. Up until the year depicted in the movie (1999) Mr. Jingles had lived about 64 years. That means that Mr. Jingles had lived about 21 times his normal lifespan. Since most humans can live 80 years or more, it is conceivable that Paul Edgecomb could live to to the age of 1,680 years (Assuming that he also lived 21 times past a normal human's lifespan).

It's ironic that the black man in The Shining had a special gift too. I have read a lot of Stephen King novels, and they don't often have black characters in them, but the black characters I know of, saved people.

John Coffey’s initials being JC isn’t a coincidence

The accent is Louisiana Creole. They speak English, French and some Portuguese all mixed up together. Unless you live around them most of your life you will have a real hard time understanding them. John Coffey was a gift from God, born with the gift of Extreme empathy. John was one of Gods true miracles. He took back what was wrong with people he encountered. The mouse was 64 years old and he was 108, so the old man probably has another 100 years to go.

One thing that I’ve always thought about with this movie … how old was John Coffey? Tom Hanks’ character at the end was 108 yrs old bc John Coffey infected him with life (he said he had to give him a little of himself to show that it was Wild Bill who killed the girls). And how much did he see? If you think of American history from 1700s to 1930 something. That’s a lot of anguish, pain and death especially since it was Louisiana which is the south (civil war, Spanish/American war, Native American displacement across the country). We don’t know where he originated from but if we assume he’s from the American south since it’s based in Louisiana than John Coffey dealt with a lot. Plus going back less than 100 yrs from the time of the movie he would have probably been a slave which tracks bc he mentions the woman in the rocking chair when looking at the stars. ⭐️. Which would be Cassiopeia which is near the North Star. Escaped slaves would look for Cassiopeia in the night sky to follow the North Star along the Underground Railroad to freedom. Even if John Coffey didn’t escape he would have heard of the constellation. Plus 1930s is right before WW2. He would have seen the horrors during reconstruction in the south after the civil war to people coming back from WW1. As an empath who would have lived so long, that had to be a hard time to live through with his abilities.

One of the BEST movies ever made. And like The Shawshank Redemption, King had his hands in that, also. Those 2 films just show that KING is not JUST Horror. But, he IS the MASTER of Horror. Paul says he runs E Block (Death Row, Green Mile) like a hospital ward, but it's more like a monastery; the guards treat the prisoners with dignity, restoring their humanity to them. Executions need a practice session so that there are no accidents. It's less for those attending the execution and more to minimize fear and pain for the one executed. Electrocution is supposed to be a quick and humane way to execute. Paul arranges ways to get the condemned individual out of the cellblock (final family visit for Arlen Bitterbuck; Eduard "Del" Delacroix, a Cajun, was taken out under the ruse of having Del's mouse perform for an important political figure), then he has the cellblock's trusty (a trusted prisoner from the regular population who gets small benefits for menial duties) to be the stand-in for the prisoner to next be executed. While Coffey is so rooted in the immediate present that he has difficulty remembering things from one day to the next. Details elude him, including how he got the numerous scars on his back, but he remembers things like 'Cassie, the Lady in the Rockin' Chair'. 'Cassie' is a big clue. It's a reference to Cassiopeia, a constellation adjacent to Polaris (the North Star). So, he could be a LOT older. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Stephen King has allowed in interviews that John Coffey's initials being 'JC' is no coincidence. Coffey has an amazing empathic ability, having no filter against what others are feeling. This is why he said "Careful" when they were bringing in Wild Billy; Coffey could sense Wild Billy's intentions to attack the guards. This is why Del's execution hit him so hard. And it's why he finally just wanted to go 'home', back to heaven. Coffey's healing powers seems to be based on a belief that God the Father gave us perfect bodies. The problem is that demons corrupt the perfect vessel God has given us, manifesting as disease and death. So long as the body is not too long dead, Coffey can draw the demons out, which leaves the body in its intended pure and healthy state. After drawing them out, Coffey spits the demons out as 'flies', where they each quickly disappear in tiny puffs of smoke to return to Hell. The 'flies' seem to relate to the demon Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies. In this way, Coffey 'takes it back'. If death has occurred, healing has to be done while 'there's still time', before 'it was too late'.

I think my favorite scene is when Paul asked John "what do you want me to do?". As a religious person, you would have some hard conversations in your head about "right vs wrong" and trying to decide if this was a test from God. Like he said... "On the day of my judgment, when I stand before God, and He asks me why did I kill one of his true miracles, what am I gonna say? That it was my job? My job?” That scene always gets me lol.

Stephen King stories are perceived as horror or terror. I’ve never seen them that way. His stories are full of interesting and average folks. Stories about people facing horrible circumstances. King chooses creatures and the supernatural to illustrate his points. But at their core, they are stories about people facing situations they could have never imagined and trying to find their way through them. Your hearts are large. Thank you for the good time. I never took it that John could feel the whole world. I took it that he has walked all over the world because he was hundreds of years old. He had been all over Africa and been a slave and roamed the countryside as a free man. He had seen and forgotten all. BTW, at the time of this setting, antibiotics were only just barely discovered. You have to power through a UTI and pray. They would treat you with sulfa drugs, but they weren't very effective.

It's nice to see you again! The story is about a lot of things, but the main part of John Coffey who "fell from the sky" is a metaphor for Jesus Christ. Any time a character in a novel has the initials of JC it is usually meant to be a Christ-like figure. I personally believe the story is also about how wrong it is for the "state" to murder people even if they are murderers. One of the things that most people don't catch is that in the film you never know what The Chief or Del did. In the books you do. The director said he wanted the audience to feel each electrocution get progressively worse without the complication of knowing why they were being executed. He also wanted it clear that the men executed were all from the marginalized: a Native American, a Native Cajun, and an African-American. The two white men were the true bad guys because they couldn't learn from their actions (something you pointed out) but they didn't get executed by the state. They were judged by JC and dealt with. In case you were wondering, The Chief, Arlen Bitterbuck, was found guilty of killing another man during an extremely violent bar fight over a pair of boots when he was drunk. Eduard Delacroix was executed for raping and killing a teenage girl, then trying to cover up his crime by burning her body. The fire was near an apartment building that caught on fire and killed six more people, including two children. Stephen King's books are even better than his movies (which are usually based on short stories) and I hope you check them out. My favorites are The Stand and Talisman.

"Infected you with life" is what I take as a sentence from God from keeping them out of the kingdom for killing one of the gifts to the world.

The reason john coffey could feel dels pain was because he can feel not just dels death but also the death of other people because the voices in his head cause him to be connected to others and eventually being tormented by sensing the pain of others

Even if they could prove that John didn't so it, that knowledge would cause immeasurable mental damage to that family. Knowing that they welcomed the killer into their home would completely destroy the parents.

In regards to dels death. I know its only a movie, and it has to have a certain kind of brutallity in it. However, all of those guards had sidearms on during the execution. All it would take is one bullet, and del would be dead without dying like that.

Thers a misconception about Stephen King that he's a horror author. While he has written horror, he doesn't limit his writing to just that. As someone who has read every one of his books, most of them at least twice or more, i can tell you he touches on every genre

Directed by Steven Spielberg, with a great performance by John Malkovich and a very young Christian Bale.

Stephen Kings has many stories with people that have the "Shine", which could be healing powers, telekinesis, ability to start fires (Firestarter movie) and ESP. Great reaction though.... watch "The Mist", it is the third movie that King and Frank Darabont put out along with this one and Shawshank.

This is what I was able to find about what John Coffey was “He was a force of nature. Some power made him a huge hulking creature that could only be and do good, for him existing as a human was painful and his death a relief. He isn't a protagonist, that's Edgecomb, he is a piece of the heavens, or of the beam, that came in to being possibly as a direct counter reaction to the Walking Dude's presence. Old Flagg never directly appears but his evil is spread everywhere during the great depression, showing up in sickness that downs the wardens wife and in Wild Bill. Edgecomb and the other screws got caught up in a battle between these primal forces and they saw miracles. As a literary tool John Coffey is an homage to Lennie from Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. Lennie was killed by his best friend George as a kindness because his size and strength and his child like mind made him a target for the wrath of the times he lived in. George and Paul kill Lennie and John as acts of kindness is very hard times.”

If you like martial arts movie, there are some I can reccommend. The first is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It' set in medivial time in China about a famouse sword that was stolen. A funny movie is Kung Fu Hustle. It's about a man trying to make his way unemployed to survive on the streets. It's a comedy. Another comedy is Shaolin Soccer. It's about a group of monks who decided to join a soccer tournament to raise money to save their monastary. Use subtitles as the dubbed version is correct.

You are correct, John Coffey was an "Empath" (Among other things ..... Seer, healer, etc). Empath is derived from the word "Empathy" ..... Meaning that he had the ability to share and understand the feelings of others. When Del was electrocuted, John could feel every bit of what Del was going through.

Not many emotions are ever shed on this channel. Sometimes it feels, like this one, they are just hanging out to get it over with.

Like to recommend some 1980’s Classics: “Clue”, “Labyrinth”, “War Games”, “Legend “, “The NeverEnding Story”, “D.A.R.Y. L.” (all family friendly). And some grown up mystery/ thrillers: “Wild Things”, “Oscar”, “Two Days in the Valley”, “Jade”, “Fatal Attraction”, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle”, “Kiss the Girls”, “Along Came a Spider”- (nothing supernatural or paranormal in any of these. )

The Shining and Doctor Sleep are the next two in this “trilogy” that isn’t a trilogy.
