As of March 15, 2016, estimates placed the number of Native American remains in U.S. museums at about 500,000. Having worked with three tribes, I strongly support their efforts to get them back. It's a matter of respect.

Native burial grounds are all over this nation. We had something like that happen when I was a boy.We we're sewing wheat seeds when the seeder got stuck on what we thought was a root,it turned out to be an old old femur bone.We dug the rest up and moved it next to our fence(same field)and reburied them, only much deeper. We had no problem with haints.

Great story Donnie. I just found your channel and really enjoyed this one. I live near to Fall Creek Falls State Park in Bledsoe County I am half Native American. My mother is Shawnee Cherokee her mother was Shawnee and her father was Cherokee they were brought up in Oklahoma near Tahlequah. I moved here 22 years ago and bought an old shack and 27 Acres on the Cumberland plateau. The old house I live in was built in 1895. It has very low ceilings and at the time was a poor man's house and is still a poor man's house. I live here alone with my dogs and tend my vegetable gardens. I frequently see visions of Indians around the property and even coming through the house. There is an old spring on the side of the mountain just below my house that has old rock walls at the back. There is still two old grinding Stones where they ground their grain at the edge of the spring. All Old-Timers around here said that the walls around the spring were put there by the native people. I love this place and I love the spirits that come through. I have never felt afraid or threatened or anyting.

That was decent and right of your folks to respect that field. There was an Indian burial mound on one of my grandpa's land. He just left it in woods and never even logged near it. Speaking of guardian spirits, I was raised on property that was passed down on the other side of the family. One of my great uncles farmed it just before us and he really loved that land. I had been working in his old orchard and didn't start walking hime till after dark. When I got to a spot where he'd built a springhouse decades ago (and long gone), I distinctly felt a presence and the hair stood up on the back of my neck, but I wasn't afraid. I spoke softly to the presence and just said a bit about what I'd been doing that day. I could feel a sense of relief in the night air and I don't know, I just felt like it was OK with the presence for me to keep walking home. My wife has said she saw someone checking on her when she spent the night at my folk's house. I never saw anyone, but I believe my great uncle's spirit still watches over the place.

Wow! What a great story Donnie!!😊👍🏻 Loved this one! ❤️ It’s easy to tell you were raised by a wonderful family and that you come from ancestors that had such a great respect for the land. They instilled in you a great love of the earth and all who dwell on it. We who love & take care of the Earth much as the Native Americans did and still do, are few and far between these days. It’s such a shame that so many are not as evolved or as enlightened about taking better care of the earth especially now with climate change. We as a collective really need to have a greater respect for her and thank God for his beautiful creation and all that she provides in nourishing and sustaining us every day. 🙏🏻🌎❤️🙏🏻🌎❤️🙏🏻🌎❤️

Donnie I so believe this story! My father and I and a cousin, leased land in Lashmeet WV. across from Shawnee park. One evening I was resting and eating a sandwich, after a long hard day rolling hay, in the field across from the park. When I heard the words 2 times, Waapa Helini Naakala! Week went by, I told dad and the others, they laughed at me. The next morning as we came back, Archaeologist were digging Native American graves up. We had to move our cattle and leave! Those 3 words Waapa Helini Naakala, ate at me i wanted to know what they meant! I tried searching but no luck! Later I contacted an Archaeologist I knew. He searched books and found it meant, "White Man Leave." God Bless you! (Glen). WV.

I grew up fishing Lost Creek back in Sharps Chapel. When the fish weren't biting I would walk the shorelines. You could see old house seats and even a couple wells when the water was low, I would occasionally find arrowheads and other artifacts laying in the mud & dirt. There is a rich Indian history in this area.

When I was a little boy there was an old fellow in our community who believed he had a homegaurd. He would leave food for it. He was Native American and I have heard that it is a belief that it is usually a friendly spirit, sometimes a relative who has passed on, who gaurds your house. I was a teacher and mentioned something about it. One of my students said, "we have one. He comes through the kitchen and living room and goes upstairs. " I said ,"do you ever follow him to see where he goes?" " Not me," he said, "if I follow I might come out some place I don't wanna be."

@@donnielaws7020 I love hearing stories about the past. I remember when I was a teenager, sitting on the carpet at my grandparents' feet and trying to draw out the family tree as best I could, and them telling me stories about their childhoods - what they could remember. I always loved that. It helps to ground us in a reality that's very important. And you have a wonderful voice. I know you've been told that but you really do.

Wonderful story Donnie, I was thinking even before you mentioned it. That is was an Indian burial ground. It was sacred to them, that's why they showed themselves when your ancestors tried to farm it. Thank you Donnie for sharing this story with us.

I love it. You're right about applachians being superstitious people. I love this channel you have it's a good one. You made me think of four or five ghost stories I heard growing up we kids would retail them to each other scaring each other. Seems like there was always one kid who always ended up crying. We swear up and down we seen something smells something touched by something.!. 😂. I moved from there and the thing I miss most is stories.

I've been enjoying all your story telling and I would love to move to the mountains. I'm from Canada and I did visit Tennessee back in 2010 and I loved it there. There is nothing like the mountains. I had some similiar lifestyles when I was a kid living here in Ontario Canada. I'm thinking that I should write down my stories and share with my children. I would love to go and visit this field and see the native Americans. I feel so sorry for them being pushed out of their land, so it's no wonder that they come back to have a pow wow. Thanks Donnie and keep on telling the history.

Wonderful story. It is heartbreaking to think of the Native American (and African American) burial sites that are ignored and often completely disrespected. I'm sure there have been many times that the builder or farmer had no idea what they were doing. Peace to the spirits who experience pain over this.

Donny, lm a third generation farmer up here in the Hudson Valley of NY state. I have felt and seen spirits around the farm and surrounding lands most my life. The other day l pulled over to pick up a foam cooler to store my potatoes in down in my root cellar. As l got in my truck l looked into my rear view mirror for any oncoming vehicles but saw a slender fellow from his shoulders to his shoes walk across the road. l whipped my head around and poof, he was gone. He was wearing a pair of 1860s faded blue federal soldiers pants , typical brown shoes of that time and lighter blueish shirt. l think it was the old timer that worked his farm down there.A bunch of them folks joined in the fight of the 1860's from this hamlet of ours. Even the fellow that lived here where l am now was in that war and lost an arm from the elbow down. my dad saw him one morning years ago looking in the window and he turned around and vanished . always, farmer john

As a boy my neighbor and I would hike the forested areas around our home just doing what youngsters do. One day we found an area that contained several mounds of raised earth. My friend was the first to bring up that they were possibly indian burial mounds. We decided we would return with a shovel and dig one up to see what was there. We returned and I was elected to begin the dig.As soon as my foot pushed the shovel into the ground we heard the most blood curdling scream one could imagine. I threw the shovel and we both ran! That shovel stayed back in the woods for years. My moral to my story is if it looks like a grave leave it be.Before cemeteries people were buried sometimes where they fell.

Glad to know strange events happened even back then. My friends bought some land here in eastern NC. They said they had what appeared to be apparitions of Indians on horseback riding thru the backyard on more than one occasion. They finally told them that the land now belongs to them and they can no longer come on this land. They said they haven’t had any more encounters after that night. Keep the stories coming.

I've got an old Indian graveyard on my property. Before I finally realized what was there, I couldn't get within 100 yards within it with a tractor or truck. Anything mechanical would just die soon as you got close. Drug it out, it'd fire right up. The dogs and the cows wouldn't get close to it. In the house, you'd hear faint chanting, things would move, you'd catch a glimpse of a Indian moving around the corner of your eye. I did some research and found out my property once had a Cherokee settlement on it in the late 1870s and 1880s. I got ahold of a Cherokee medicine man who came out and blessed the area, laid em back to rest id reckon. I never meant to bother em, and to this day I've got that area fenced off. That was nigh on 20 years ago. I was always taught, being part Indian myself, you don't mess with an Indian graveyard. You just let em be. I occasionally still catch a glimpse of a brave out in the field or hear faint chanting but they quit messing with my tractors and trucks, quit screwing with me
