Tenzin is stubborn because he wants to live up to the legacy of his father. Tenzin is trying so hard to be the next Aang when he never could be. It’s why I love his journey in this show the most.

I thought it was cause Korra kept trying it the spirit power in every spirit she came across and it has not fully did it till this episode and she saw her uncle do it at the end of the first of episode of series 2 of legend of korra

Hello, I think that Tenzin is more similar to the superego as described by Froid, trying to control the most basic impulses, trying to maintain the rules, putting into question what does not follow the rules or norms. Toph, on the other hand, lets herself be carried away by her impulses, plays jokes, says what she thinks without thinking about the feelings of others, acts like a spoiled child, etc. (more like the ID) For my taste, Tenzin and Toph are not that similar.
