A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his KZfaq channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Man you always seem to answer something I start wondering about. Fell off on my learning but started thinking what if I think of this as going to grab certain notes of a chord with my fingers rather than a shape and here you are teaching it. 👍🏾

That voicing of the m6 that you show around the 11 minute mark -- something I just noticed when playing around with it. Move it down to the 5th fret to make Am6, then move the 6th up a fret to make the usual Am7. Alternate back and forth between them, 4 beats on the Am7 and 4 beats on the Am6, and enthusiastically sing "Yeah!" on the fourth beat of each measure, and you have "Hole In My Life" by the Police. I love stumbling across stuff like that. Thanks!

when jumping to the third, it might be helpfule to count off, first, second, third, etc. so that when you say third, those not familiar with the chord/note numbering system will get on board with the note numbering system

So, I f I have my root or 1st note of the E Major scale on the 7th fret of the 5th string, then add the Major 3rd on the 6th fret of the 4th string, then add the Perfect 5th on the 4th fret of the 3rd string it adds up to 1+7+5+3+6+4+5+4+3= 38, divided by 3 = 12 and 2/3s, so this is really a 12 tone chord with two thirds? Thanks for posting 🤡

but wait ... given the fact of inversions, how do I determine the root in the first place? This is a very genuine question because I work with a songwriter who knows no theory and invents his own weird inverted voicings for every song.

If you know your chord triads, then you can identify the chords. For example, C-E-G makes a C major chord, no matter what the order of the notes.
@theelderskatesman4417
@theelderskatesman4417 2 жыл бұрын
I do know my triads, as well as my scales, and I can find the key of any straight diatonic progression in seconds. when my friends chords are that simple, I can find how to accompany. But they very rarely are. He uses open shapes all over the neck with all kinds of extensions in the chords and modulations in the progression. I believe that when chords get more complex they can be quite ambiguous. for example, there is still a raging debate about how to name one of the most recognisable chords in the history of rock, the 'Stairwy to heaven chord'.

@@dpatt6175 I think Ian is a great teacher because he'll withhold certain pieces of information at different times. I think it's probably easier to learn the way he's describing and is more immediately impactful to think about, but then technically you'll run into the minor6 problem. Which in the grand scheme of things isn't that big of a deal.

You can't be true G if you are a poser. Watching other peoples videos can help you to cover topics such as navigating to adjacent strings and navigating from the tonic to the dominant and subdominant. Topics like navigating through the pentatonic and playing the diatonic as well. True G? defo more like poser. Can you do a video about how to visualize patterns and navigate?
