As a self taught hack this is all far to sophisticated for me and yet I just love this. It’s like listening to a conversation in French I have no idea what there saying but I appreciate the beauty of the language .

Thank you for taking Pat Metheny seriously. The stuff he did on Guitar synth when I was coming up as a bassist just killed me. It was like he was just pulling at something deep inside me, a way of expressing music that excited me even though I was more into transcribing Jaco at the time. But Pat. SMH. Thank you Rick for tracing things down. It makes me want to cry when I learn about what all Pat was able to express. I just know it moved me so much I wanted to explode. And crazy as it may sound I didn't know those guitar synth solos were even Pat in the beginning. I knew I loved them though. I figured maybe Lyle, I don't know. Barcarole? Are You Going With Me. What the heck? It's so cool to hear the mentality behind his playing and how he approached things. That makes more sense, a little, about the flat wounds and the picking style. I can't begin to thank you enough for these videos.

Sir you have totally explained the soundtrack of my childhood! :) All those sunny summer days as a kid in the 70's listening to my brothers Pat Metheny records! I think the grooves wore through we played them so much!

What's really hip is his timing, phrasing, use of accents and dynamics on off beats. Sometimes the notes are very simple chord outlines w/a chromatic here and there but where he puts the notes in the phrase is so, what, 'conversational'? Great video, thank you!

Way over my head ... but not over my ears. Thank you for doing justice to PM's genius. The world could use more of this. I would love to see you deconstruct one of PM's classic albums. Say, New Chautauqua. Kind of under the radar, and not as musically sophisticated (I think, but I may be wrong). So why is it so emotionally satisfying? I believe it has something to do with what Pat call's (musical) narrative, or sometimes even 'glue.' See PM"s interview in the great book, The Jazz Ear by Ben Ratliff. Discuss!

Picked up on Metheny back in the late 70's along with Weather and Return. Always been a fan. I haven't a clue as to any of the shop talk about the music techno music stuff. Just like the vibrations that come from the music. Rick's video's are cool.

In 1990 I was working for a Barcelona's based company that did audio-visual stuff and we were sent to Andorra to set up some giant projectors at the Escaldes Jazz Festival. My knowledge of any kind of jazz at the time was 0.I was a working class family kid from Barcelona that listened to pop and heavy metal. The line up was Oscar Peterson Quartet, Past Metheny Group and Manhattan Transfer. I knew Manhattan Transfer. The afternoon of Pat-s night we were with the final adjustments on the projectors when they started rehearsing. t was my colleague and I seating on first row and no one else. I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!!. As he realized of my enthusiasm {air guitar and all) he started pointing at me before some solos and trying to talk to me but I didn't speak any English at the time, so we smiled at each other. I was having a fucking ball with this guy I had just discovered!!!. I watched the concert at night hoping for the set up to work faultless so I could concentrate on the show. That was it. Seen him live about 7 or 8 times since and have listened and still listen to their albums thousands of times. He opened a door by pure chance that I crossed and never looked back. Music is life!!!

I’ve listened to Pat my whole life for the the joy and inspiration, never understanding musical theory. As a basic Folk style player I am mesmerized by Rick’s comprehensive breakdown of the magic of Pats composing and playing. Easily the most entertaining and educational subscription I have found. But, I would love to hear Rick breakdown the playing of Tony Rice, especially his early Coltrane influence Jazz playing.

You promised part 3 on substitute changes. I'd love that. In my opinion a lot of his reharms are based on Herbie and McCoy. Still, I'm having a hard time trying to understand it. I know you could help people like me to understand these reharms. When I hear Herbie play standards with Miles around 65 (plugged nickel) his playing is so deft and contemporary, and I can't wrap my head around it. Thx for your great insights.

Rick, great job! By the way, the Bbmaj7 (not Gm7) Pat uses on the C7 in the beginning is a classic Wes Montgomery sound. For example, check out the beginning of Wes' solo on Moving Along. It's in Eb and Wes outlines a Dbmaj7 in the beginning of his solo on the first Eb7. Of course, Pat makes it sound like Pat!

Most intresting. I’ve always been intrigued by the chromaticism in Pat’s playing. Makes me think of Miles in the sixties. By the way, your singing shows that you transcribed a lot of Keith Jarrett’s singing and try to emulate his style, haw, haw. Thx for solid info!

I guess Pat is from the ‘bebop school’ or ‘vertical’ style of playing, while John McLaughlin is from the ‘modal school’ or ‘linear’ style. John comes from the Coltrane influence, the spiritual, indian inspired playing. But Pat comes from the Charlie Parker, Charlie Christian tradition. Is that fair to say? I’d love to watch a video that gets into some McLaughlin’s solos just to get a good glance into that other side of jazz improvisation and parallel it to this one. Great vid by the way.

Thanks for this Rick. Even though I'm a bass player, I have seen Metheny more than any other artist (easily 25 times). I personally love soloing and this has been fantastic to incorporate some Metheny chromatics. I hope you do more parts to Metheny playing as well as his composition. (You can even get into Lyle Mays solos too :-) Keep up the greaat stuff. (and more Steely Dan "What makes all their songs great!") :-)

Great video Rick . I love the dbmin triad over the Bb . That is all it really is when you break it down .Just dbmin with a Bb in the bass . I also think of it as Db melodic minor scale. I have been transcribing a lot of Metheny ideas from live videos myself to get new ideas to play on these tunes . Instead of just playing the ones from the studio recordings . I was checking out a version of it's just talk from Italy where he takes a synth solo . Metheny is an incredibly creative and gifted musician . Love your videos . You mentioned you studied with Mick Goodrick was that at New England Conservatory ? I recall was he one of the teachers there ? Great videos very informative . You know the language of harmony very well . Keep making the videos .
