curtis's strategy is to guess when the important information will be given in the question and buzz right before that. it will take a second or so for the host to acknowledge the buzz and stop reading, so there will still be a few words spoken after the buzz, allowing curtis to get enough info to answer correctly. most people will wait until they hear the info and know the answer to buzz, but curtis gets in a little bit ahead. when other players buzz in early, they have to buzz in even before the earliest possible moment where they'll get enough info to answer, almost guaranteeing they won't actually know the question. curtis's strategy really is the best one to take in this kind of game, where the trivia is so easy that all the players were know almost all of the answers.

i figure this dude was on the academic team in school because thats how lots of competitive trivia is set up - theyll tell you exactly what sort of thing theyre looking for right at the beginning of the question then give more context that makes it easier, so some people can swoop in right at the start. one of the questions in this video was "bram stoker's novel" and he was able to cut it off there, because the most famous bram stoker novel is dracula so dracula was a relatively safe guess

Actually a very smart strategy, he knows enough to get a decent amount of his buzzes right, but even when he gets them wrong he has such a lead because he literally just doesn’t let anyone else answer that it doesn’t matter, on top of that it makes the other contestants nervous and they’ll buzz when they don’t have an answer further increasing his lead
@MichaelSuperbacker
@MichaelSuperbacker 2 жыл бұрын
So was the game different than jeopardy? In jeopardy if the first person gets the answer wrong other people can buzz in. It’s the game itself that is the flaw! There were a bunch of shitty game shows in the 80s!

I am a liar, you are a liar. I am a thief, you are a thief. We have all sinned. We have all broken God’s law and fallen short of His glory. The consequence of this is death. Hell. God is perfect and He will judge you with a perfect standard. Anyone less than perfect, is worthy of condemnation. So I ask you, are you perfect? Only someone deluded would say they are. But God, out of the love He has for us, gave us a way to be saved from eternal damnation. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for your sins. He was then buried, and on the third day He resurrected. Christ died for you. He took the punishment in your place. He lived the perfect life you could not, and then was crushed under the full wrath of God, bearing our sin on the cross. He paid the fine for your crime. Jesus resurrected from the dead, defeating death. This is a sign that God almighty approved the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. And now, Christ is the only way to escape punishment. Christ is the only way to be saved. Repent, and believe in the gospel. Believe on Jesus Christ. Put your faith in His death and resurrection alone to save you. You cannot be saved by your own works. Salvation is by grace, through faith. Repent, and believe. You have been presented this today. You are without excuse. God bless you.

Watching this made me realize why Jeopardy is so much more fun to watch. The reason Curtis was able to keep winning, it seems to me, was because a) they can buzz in before the question is finished, b) if they get it wrong, the others don't get to try to answer, and c) the questions aren't that difficult. I'm sure he studied and practiced but they're nowhere near as challenging as Jeopardy questions, so you're far more likely to get it right with a guess.
@mxspokes
@mxspokes Жыл бұрын
He also is trying to buzz in in a very tight window; which is *before* the host gives important context clues but *after* he's still going to say them as part of a natural part of finishing his thought. If the buzzer cut the host's mic it would be a different story.

Jeopardy also allows the other contestants to answer if you don't know. That's why it's game-breaking here to buzz in early: you deny them the chance to earn any points ever. As long as you're right more often than wrong, you're guaranteed to win. And that's assuming that penalty is equal to points for getting it right -- which I don't think it is lol.

Curtis’ buzzing-in-before-he’s-heard-the-whole-question thing is actually how you are taught to behave in big quizzing competitions with buzzers, there’s a bunch of crazy techniques like half-pressing down the button before the question so you have less of a delay between the mental impulse and the actual pressing of the button. What he’s doing though is where you are taught to be able to tell from the start of the question what the full question is likely to be and to buzz in off of that alone.

@ldeming

The host continues reading the question for a couple more words during the buzzer, which is what I think makes the strategy viable. As long as Curtis buzzes right before he thinks the key word is going is said, he can essentially get the extra information he needs to answer AFTER the buzzer. It probably wouldn't work as well if ringing in immediately cut off the host or if the game worked like Jeopardy where the buzzers are locked out until after the question is read and an arbitrary countdown occurs.

To compare the question answering on Jeopardy, since in all honesty this is just Jeopardy but worse. On Jeopardy, a staffer has to enable the buzzer system once the host finishes their sentence. Buzz too soon and your blocked for a few seconds; which is crucial time. It was at a point where some of the best Jeopardy players like Ken Jennings were able to notice the style of how some of the staff handled the buzzer along with knowing some of Trebeks speech patterns to figure out when he would finish the question.

I was on a game show and there's a reason Curtis's strategy worked so well. The moderator would usually add one or two more words after the buzzer and it would essentially be like it was being read just to him at that point. Curtis was also on Ben Stein's money and Jeopardy where he lost. Point of note with Jeopardy, if you use the buzzer early there like his preferred strategy you actually get locked out for a split second which means you lose the chance to be first.

This is why Jeopardy! has a rule that you can’t buzz in until after the clue is read.

This reminds me of some obscure anime I once watched where the whole premise was the main characters trying to become champions at trivia quiz competitions and now I’m convinced Curtis was in this show and somehow made the insane tactics for figuring out the question from voice tone and context clues actually work.

If anyone wants an idea about how Curtis is probably guessing correctly before the question is finished: In most game shows if they ask a question about an artist it's probably going to be an artist that most of the audience is going to be familiar with. So if the question asks about an artist that was also an inventor, you should probably guess "Leonardo Da Vinci" even though he wasn't the only artist who invented things. The same logic applies to other catrgories too.

Exactly what I thought when watching this. Predictable questions and weird game rules allowed for Curtis to win like this.

As someone who _was on a trivia show_ of this style for several years - _this is why they have lock-out on the buzzers._ You've got a huge illuminated pair of icons, a green check and a big red X behind the host, and when they finish reading the question, the producer hits a button in the booth, there's an enormous CLUNK noise, and the check mark lights up green. _Only then_ can you buzz in to answer the question. Otherwise, you get shows that look like this. If you want to see some real scary speed, check out National Quiz Bowl trivia round reads - the proctor reads the questions at lightning pace, and the people answering usually get the answer within the first _5 or 6 words._

I'm confused watching this video cause the only Trivia show I know works like this ?? You buzz in as soon as you get the answer even if the question is not done ?? Sometimes people buzz but they don't have the answer and that's ok ?? Didn't realize some people would want to avoid that lmao I guess that's a cultural difference.

@@mireillecopin6183 They changed how it works because strategies like these were pretty much killing the format. A lot of people prefer to watch trivia shows and play along, as opposed to just rooting for a highly competitive contestant.

@@jade_is_tired yeah that makes sense that some people want a slower-paced show. Although I can assure you that letting contestant buzz in as soon as they want doesn't stop you from playing along from home, it just makes it highly competitive haha It's really one of those cultural things you don't realize exists until you hear about it. Like I knew time and silence are cultural, as in how long you should take before answering a question in everyday conversation varies from language to language, or how rude it is to cut someone off depends on the language/culture. I just never thought of the implications of such differences when it comes to trivia shows haha

my favorite part is the other contestants getting panicked and buzzing in only to go "nah I don't actually know lol" and everyone has a laugh about it
