Here’s a psychoacoustic trick for insanely wide stereo effects, and why it can be dangerous to use in a mix. Try or buy Cableguys plugins: www.cableguys.com/products.html

a kind reminder: haas effect is particularly dangerous in low frequencies, so it's better to combine it with a high-pass filter

@@kharbandaww That's about where I've put the HPF on the delay when working with acoustic guitar. I always check frequently in mono while I'm adjusting.

also if your left/right signals are strongly correlated (like if they're copies of one another) you'll get comb filtering when the two are summed together, like in mono playback

i love haas so much i like combining it with Mid/Side gain to dial in perfect space for the sound

I've used it in the past very subtly on acoustic guitar for singer-songwriter pieces. Avoids the bland virtual mono where there's the voice and guitar sitting in the middle with only the ambience to add width. Careful EQ of the delayed signal and optimizing the delay time in mono sorts the problems. The result is a guitar with some size to it. Some might not like this technique but when it works, it works. Anyway, multiple mics on the guitar can have similar issues.

Been critically checking out music that I like and this might explain the synth stabs. It seems to come from the left but some in the right. Wasn’t sure if it was double tracked and panned but this would make sense. I’ll try it. Song is Starchild by Level 42. Awesome jazz funk before they went full pop. Still a great band :)

If I'm correct, you can resolve the issue with the Haas effect through phase flipping, not for sure if I'm right but I'd assume phase is the issue here

In my opinion this technique should not be used, period. Learn proper stereo enhancement techniques, avoid comb filtering your sounds in mono. But to each their own I guess.
@divineintervention7925 Жыл бұрын
What would you call proper stereo enhancement techniques? Got any examples? I’m genuinely interested as I just tend to use chorus, reverb and/or delay and just dial them in until they sound right. Which might be just a very basic solution? What can I do that’s more advanced?

Why are you using two stereo takes as mono tracks, instead of recording in mono in the first place?

@@Cableguys Whilst I'm here tho.. yeah it is effectively the same, but takes up double the HD space and I've noticed you record mono as stereo files often across your videos, that's gotta be adding up? One thing if you're going to do that, you can split the signal and gainstage them so you have much more headroom on one allowing you to scream and avoid peaks, allowing you a wider dynamic range on the way in, as a way to utilise the extra HD space for a logical reason

just record 2 times the same take and pan right and left
