In this meeting of the Building Construction Awareness panel, the group reviews an incident that claimed the lives of five firefighters in Hackensack, New Jersey.
July 1, 1988 was a Friday, and firefighters Richard Williams, Steven Ennis, Richard Reinhagen, William Kresja and Leonard Radumski all went to work that morning just like you and I do. By sunset that day their names would become synonymous with tragedy and an event forever marked in fire service history.
Guests: John Davis and Mike Christensen of the Hackensack Fire Department
Panel: Jack Murphy, Glenn Corbett, Paul Dansbach, Joe Pronesti

Very good presentation. I am not a fire Fighter I took a Fire service class in junior college in 1975 as an elective for my Law Enforcement associates degree. I served active and reserve side for 27+ years with many Chicago fire fighters and police. Much respect to all take the fire service as a vocation. Medal of Honor awardee Dakota Meyer just became a fire fighter down in Texas. I have seen many old structures burn as I was a Messenger for 15 years in the Chicago Metropolitan area. I live in a house built in about 1883 picked up and moved and rebuilt in the mid 1950's. We had one fire at the house that burned for 45 minutes before I woke up smelling smoke. Painters using a blow torch to remove paint after being instructed to only use scrappers and brushes. Full dimension timber and 18 inch plaster over reach fire stop on 12 inch centers slowed it down a lot. I put the falling coals out from the basement with a garden hose on a 90 degree on valve setup I installed just in case years before. Then called the fire department as no flames had yet showed. Keep the push going to educate both Fire Fighters and the Public.

That building was a Ford spec building and there were many of those same Ford dealerships all around the country.

Fire fighters should note that there is a movement toward using wood for large load baring members in modern buildings. They are not the same. as traditional solid wood trusses. They incorporate laminated partical board. It is a big deal, and it will be coming to a new large factory near you.

No. Sprinklers. Always no sprinklers. What needs to happen before they are mandated in all new and old public buildings?
