NOT EVERY PART IS A SLUM OR RUINS... This is what CNN, Nat Geo, Movies, or others never showed you guys before or after the quake. All we see is ugly! A lot is, but a lot isn't. Yes Haiti is very poor, and it just got leveled by the earthquake, it will take many years to even get back close to normal. Although it is poor, what cant be taken away is its rich culture, and strength. If you saw the coverage you saw people who already had nothing, got that leveled, and still praise God, they still chant, they still have hope, they still move on. Our culture has great sounding music, great tasting food (not mud pies that you see the kids with nothing eat on tv), nice dancing, and hard working family oriented people. It's hard to find Haitian American scum in the US... They come here and do great things. Port au Prince should have never been that poor and overcrowded, but with Haiti now all over the news and awareness is everywhere, people forget that its a whole country and not just Port au Prince. People can invest time, money and effort outside that crowded city. Many Haitians can relocate to the other provinces. Life can be restored somehow...
Its hard to make some/little forward progress and then have to deal with natural disasters that the country cant handle at this point...(hurricanes, mudslides, and now an earthquake)
Many reasons as to why Haiti is the way it is after 200 years of freedom... Yes there has been corruption, but interference has devastated the place. We have all contributed to Haiti's misfortunes, but the former colonial power France and the current colonial power the US, bear most responsibility. They punished the former slaves for their temerity in throwing off both slavery and French colonial rule: the US could forgive them for kicking out the French, but to abolish slavery was unforgivable. Washington refused to recognise its neighbouring republic for 60 years.
By then, the French had virtually bankrupted Haiti through its demands for exorbitant reparations. Haiti was in the grip of a chronic political instability that was exacerbated by foreign interests keen to exploit both its weakness and its resources. In 1915 the US finally occupied the country, in part to remove the influence of rival European powers, and ran it like a colony for nearly 20 years. Haiti has rarely been free of US interference since.
The long-running dictatorship of Papa Doc Duvalier was supported by the US, as was the succession of his son, Baby Doc. After Baby Doc's departure, in 1986, the US attempted to fix the first elections, a policy that led directly to the election day violence in November 1987. Undeterred, Washington continued to meddle. When Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the hugely popular former priest, was finally elected president in 1991, he was ousted in a coup before the end of the year. President Clinton negotiated his return in 1994, reportedly on condition that he accept a US blueprint for Haiti's economic development. When Aristide won a second election in 2001, he was again deposed, in 2004, this time forcibly flown by George W Bush's administration to exile in Africa, where he remains.

There's poverty in every country in the world! We Haitians, we have so many countries against us because we are the first black country that said no to slavery! We contributed so much to the success of the US in so many ways. A Haitian man discovered Chicago. We helped the US fight the Revolutionary War! I can go on and on! You should educate yourself before you start disrespecting Haiti and Haitians. Peace and God bless you kid.

I'm a Dominican and I know For sure how Haitians people are Very hard workers and I understand that Dominican is a Poor country and we can't have Too many Haitian living in our Country because the economy Is weak. And I know the Dominican Government spend lot of money In hospital and education for Haitians living in Dr, but the big Problem is not the Haitian people The big problem are the corrupts Dominican and Haitian governments in both sides. The Dominican army guys taking Money from people to let them Cross the border also taking money from Chinese people to Come to live in Dominican, that is Not new , that happens for years. Malditos gobiernos corruptos. I hope that the Haitians find the Way to have better life, they deserve because they are human been. Haitianos metanle Manos a sus corruptos gobernantes y que Dios les de mejor vida.

We are one island , but different Country. My wish is To see one day Haiti with growing economy, growing tourism Like Dominican Improving education, health , Environment. Then we will be proud of our island. Dominican one country Haiti another country Both with great success in economy democracy and both Independents country. Not one Country in one island, two country in one island, because Haitians are Proud of they country and Dominicans are proud of Dominican Republic.

Haiti is such a beautiful country! It has a beauty that America doesn't understand! I've been to Haiti several times 4 missions and plan to move there. I have always said that Haitians have a beauty and a joy that I never seen. The way they can praise God in the heat, while hungry (n church is like 5 hours!) with their kids (no kid's church) is amazing! They have so little and are so happy! Thanx 4 sharing-Esp the history, I learned ALOT! I loved seeing the taptaps! Bondye beni ou! :-D

But lived In Haiti and if people wanna get really into this Haitians are considered African there culture is more African. food is just like sierra Leon food. voodoo is from Benin music is influenced from west end central Africa Haitians even dance to African music Congolese to be specific at least were I lived. The first slaves to arrive on the island Senegalese people and Africans from all over from central to west Africa. So please you Americans that are close minded and never lived there can shut up.

Love from Jamaica, my brothers and sisters. Haiti will ALWAYS have a place in my heart. It was YOU who were the first to stand up to the tyranny that suffocated the Caribbean region for many years. Big to Touissaint, Dessalines, and Henry Christophe. All of us as Caribbean people owes some measure of grattitude to you. There are a lot of places I would love to visit, and right up there is Haiti, just to personally thank you, and enjoy your absolutely beautiful country. One love from Jamaica.

I'm so glad you posted this positive video avbout Haiti. I visited last year and am soon going again. It is a lovely country with many friendly people. Prices are high for hotel visitors and I believe that is because many hotel rooms are taken up by "do gooders" on expense accounts from aid organizations. The ones I met did nothing good and had a nice vacation at the expense of those donating to help Haiti.

This is what most Haitians during Papa doc time experience, Haiti was beautiful and rich in resources. This video is a warning to Americans of how the STATES will be if people don't get aware and involve. Where the 10% elites live in luxury and the middle and lower class have nothing.

Ms. ladybug, Haiti and Haitians have contributed so much to the success of the USA. If it wasn't for Haitians, you guys would be speaking with a British accent. British accent sounds nice by the way :-) . We helped USA fight the Revolutionary War. A Haitian man discovered Chicago. Toussaint L'ouverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines and so many other Haitians Heroes have fought for the success of the whole black race. We Haitians today are happy that they did. We are the originals. Meditate on that.
