One of the main criticisms of the umpire paying the free kick against Rankine was the fact there was under a minute left in a close game and the umpire needed to "sense the moment" and to "feel the moment". In round 6 Sam Draper swan dived on the ball and it was clearly holding the ball. There are 4 on field umpires and the big criticism at that time was that none of the 4 umpire had the guts to blow the whistle as they were too scared to call it in case they got it wrong. I will conced that there is a difference as 15metre free kicks are rarely called but if we want umps to umpire in a "situational sense" it becomes a very slippery slope quickly. When the player infringed by such a large margin then the umpires shouldn't be criticised for paying the free kick when we hounded them the other way a month ago.

Should change the rules to steps taken instead of distance covered for bouncing the ball, simplifies the game.

Why have the rule in the first place? 18 on the field, close the space if a player starts running.

I think it would be waaay harder for an umpire to count steps in real time when they have so many things to look at and keep track of. It also (dis/)advantages players based on their stride length
@uToobeD
@uToobeD 13 күн бұрын
I've always felt that the "15m penalty" took into consideration things like speed/whether a person was being chased, not intentionally, but just due to the nature of the rule. First umpires have a dozen things to be looking at, it's very difficult to know where a person is exactly when they get the ball, and then at what point in any given direction is 15m. If a player is running slowly it's easier to determine, or to get a sense that it's "too far". The crowd making nervous sounds is also a bit of a giveaway that they're concerned the player either needs to dispose of it or bounce (usually dispose of it). We all know what "obviously too far" looks like, but that range from "Alright he should think about bouncing soon" to that point is very hard to gauge. The fact the umpire made that call, when it was 21m probably just shows how skillful he is able to ascertain that, but to me it looked like a borderline call that should have been let go. Rankin isn't trying to run too far, he's obviously just not able to get a sense of how far he is run given the fact he's aiming on getting a goal, it's late, he's tired, he's being chased, etc. But anyway, the point is that it's very hard for an umpire to know what 15m is exactly, and that is made even harder when that player is very quick. Quick players are much more likely to "get away" with it.

Its interesting that all the Umpire calls have been against non-victorian sides. 2022 - Adelaide v Sydney ( Sth Melb), 2023 - Frem v Carlton, Adelaide v Essendon, Adelaide v Collingwood. Let me just say when it comes to 50/50 decisions, you know which team is going to get an advantage. Surprised alot of clubs are not doing stats internally.

A fit Elliot Yeo is worth that money, and that makes me wonder if he'll take it. It seems like overs given the amount of footy he's played last few years. I mean, his best footy is easily Brownlow level footy. The only reason he hasn't ever really been close (best was a tie for 13th in 2019), is that he's been injury prone over his career.

@@BackChat I think we'll be given pick 22 approx (free agency) for Yeo. Then we'd have an extra draft pick to pick a player or package together a bid for a player. Someone in the early mid 20s would be ideal.

@BDub2024
@BDub2024 11 күн бұрын
@@chriskelly9476 The talk is that Yeo due to his age will be considered a free agent pick at the END of the first round. This could be anywhere from 20 to 29. Remember Eagles had first pick in the second round last year and it was pick 30. McKay had certain criteria including age which meant that North received a pick at the beginning of the first round.

@BDub2024
@BDub2024 12 күн бұрын
@@BackChat Actually Brayshaw has a big decision. Born and bred in Melbourne with a Melbourne fiancé. Has 8 years remaining. If he went to a club with a big corporate support he'd set himself up for life after footy. Corporate career, marketing and promotion, speaking engagements etc... IF he will end up living in Melbourne, then he may as well go now and start building contacts and a career after footy. 30 years of working, you want to utilise all your footy contacts. Pointless if he moves to Melb but his footy contacts are in Perth. Being played on the wing for Freo he'd be getting frustrated.
@BDub2024
@BDub2024 13 күн бұрын
don't players need a career after footy. if he stays in Perth and works on business opportunities with people associated with the club then wouldn't he be better staying. He gets paid more and goes over east. But then he still needs to return here but will need to start again and his brand will be damaged because he left and he may have less opportunities.

The problem with Eagles is that in next 3 year you'll have 11 of their better players retired. And some of those kids won't end up developing and will be delisted. That's the worry for the Eagles long term. Players gone will be Ryan Gaff Sheed Hunt Yeo Kelly Duggan Cripps McGovern Darling Barrass. Then you still need to delist 5 guys from the main list this year. Not rookies or academy players but main list. That's tough on some really good kids that have just had bad luck. Who is in the firing line? Rotham Burgiel (unlucky) Witherden Jamieson Culley Ledwards Hedwards... remember 2-3 retirements too. But if we bring in some free agents then you'll need more of a turnover.
