I was so happy when I decided to jump up from 220 to heavyweight. My coach always wanted me under 220 so I could wrestle either weight class if needed. But my junior year we got a new freshman that was perfect for the 220 class and I was free to eat whatever I wanted. For those who don't know, the only weight class after 220 is 285, so I had 65lbs of wiggle room. The down side is you could be like me, 225lbs against 284.9lbs

I wrestled a guy once at 220 lbs when I weighed 184.2 lbs at a tournament that pretty much did a round Robin. There wasn't 2 lbs allowance yet and I didn't make scratch weigh either so it was okay for me to wrestle 220. I'll never understand my coaches' logic in thinking this was okay lol.
@xqiuvmah2 жыл бұрын
@@Cubanburrito305 I also had a questionable coaches decision when I was in junior high. I was 12 years old and weighed 147lbs. Our team went to a tournament that had 3 age brackets, middle school, junior high, and high school. There was only 1 other junior high kid in the 150lbs class and the next weight class was 185 and it only had 2 as well. My coach wanted me to get more experience and all my competitors where very new to wrestling and not at all athletic (big round dough balls, basically). So my coach entered me into the high school age bracket. I was a 12 year old, wrestling 150lbs in a high school tournament. 3 of my opponents were seniors and the rest juniors or sophomores with no freshmen. I actually did pretty well winning my first 4 matches and getting into the semi finals. Then I was up agaisnt a giant 17 year old ginger who elbowed me in the nose after only a minute. It was bleeding too much and I had to forfeit because I couldn't get it to stop. My next match was for deciding 3rd place and this kid was very strong, with very little experience or wrestling skills. He was beating me because of the difference in strength (I was 12 and never even entered the weight room yet) and then he put me into an illegal arm bar that just happened to dislocate my shoulder. I couldn't continue the match and since it was an illegal move, I won 3rd place in the tournament. That was my first ever dislocation and for the next 4 years I was plagued by near weekly, sometimes daily, dislocations of that same shoulder. It was finally fixed after I tore my rotator cuff my junior year and had surgery. Of course, now my range of motion is reduced by a large amount

If you’re on weight a day before, your not doing it right. A proper weight cut can be done by just drinking access water several days before your weigh in then stopping fluids 12-18 hours before weigh ins. The excessive water makes your body release water to try and balance itself, when you stop the excessive water your body will still excrete water. I did this for 6 years and never missed weight. I’d walk around 220 for a 205 weigh in. Never went more than 18 hours without food and water or had to use a sweat suit or sauna.

Your weight fluctuates normally a few pounds so all your doing is taking advantage of that to lose weight quickly but temporarily. Cutting weight is probably the one thing convincing me not to get into any kind of combat sports honestly
@telmnamm75492 жыл бұрын
Cutting substantial weight isn't nessicary if you're an excellent fighter. You can be the best without cutting. Cutting just provides an advantage (or if ur in hs an easier spot)

Cutting weight taught me a lot of valuable lessons and can help make you disciplined. If you mess up, even a little, you see the consequences IMMEDIATELY. However, it’s also the reason I hated wrestling actual matches more than once a week. If your a few pounds overweight, no problem to cut weight the day before. But if you have to then KEEP it off for multiple days it becomes exponentially more draining. I recommend wrestling at a weight class you can comfortably make weight at. I felt so much better at practice because I was actually hydrated and ate

What a miserable existence. I'll never live my life in a way in which I have to suffer and harm myself for weeks at a time for one night of wrestling. Absolutely no way.

@@Makynzee__Brooks you can do that every single day. As a man, fights at bars aren't uncommon. 95% of the time, getting into a fight at the bar results in both parties just going home, no police involved.

Cutting weight sucks... remember last year cutting 5 pounds in a day and a half after finding out that i had to go down a weight class so i could wrestle that weekend. Worst days of my life

The real ones who suffered through this understand the feeling of extreme thirst. Food wasn’t even a thought. Everyone thinks it’s the not eating that is hard. Nope it’s limiting the fluids and then still going out and practicing hard and needing to chug a water and instead only taking a few sips of it. I don’t miss any of it

Respect to wrestlers out there... putting your body through that all the time is rough. Especially if you cutting a lot of weight to reach your weight class. The wrestling team wanted me to try out on school...but they wanted me at 112 and I was walking around at 145... plus I love food too much lol

Honestly, people say it’s really bad and makes you feel weak because they rush it. I’ve had teammates who didn’t eat anything for 2 days before a tournament and still missed weight because they’re body isn’t receiving anything, so it try’s to withhold everything to sustain itself. Drink lots of water and eat light. Chicken breast, grapes, yogurt, fruit. Anything that is low in calories but still has some nutritional value really.

That’s why I started managing my weight during football season. Get to running 10 miles a day by wrestling season and with my weight where I wanted it I could virtually eat whatever I wanted, and kind of needed to for energy for the day. I miss the grind
