Starr Carter is constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighborhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what's right. THE HATE U GIVE is based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller by Angie Thomas and stars Amandla Stenberg as Starr, with Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Issa Rae, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Common and Anthony Mackie.
Director: George Tillman, Jr.
Producers: Robert Teitel, George Tillman, Jr., Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey
Screenplay by: Audrey Wells
Based upon the novel by Angie Thomas
Cast: Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, KJ Apa, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, Issa Rae, Sabrina Carpenter, with Common and Anthony Mackie

black parents having to tell their kids what to do when they get pulled over is probably the saddest thing ever
@gfoer
@gfoer 4 жыл бұрын
I understand your reaction to that scene, I got terribly sad during a number of scenes. We are a white couple and don't live in a city, but we've given that talk to our son, too. And when I've been pulled over or otherwise come into contact with police, I have on a few occasions been treated rather poorly, if not mildly threatened, for no reason - I follow those same instructions that the parents in the movie gave. Racism or not, angry and aggressive cops can be anywhere, and so it's good advice to give to anyone. You never know who you're going to run into....BUT, things are pretty quiet around here, and I don't have to fear the police - or getting robbed walking down the street.
@dreamyanon5151
@dreamyanon5151 4 жыл бұрын
gfoer Thats cool, but don't try to minimize racism. There is a difference in the conversations black people have with their kids about police. Racism exists. No matter how uncomfortable it makes you or how ignorant you can try to be. And cops were historically known for NOT having the purpose of protecting us. Or else Tulsa Black Wall Street would not have been able to be completely massacred. Finding a way to relate (which you were clearly not doing) is one thing, but don't ever try and take away from our story. And you need to actually watch this movie and educate yourself if you can even allow yourself to think that way.

gfoer I don’t quite think your confrontations are equal to those of black people, at all. By now..you should know that.
@gfoer
@gfoer 3 жыл бұрын
@@c.6267 I didn't say that, so please don't put words in my mouth. I am not trying to minimize the experiences of our black population. Quite the contrary. I AM concerned about the lack of nuance in the conversations around racism, police violence (and many other issues..). If you are open to it, here is one honest attempt by a very thoughtful person to tease out some of these nuances: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNOXq9eUx8mYmYk.html It is perhaps more important now than ever to really listen and hear each other in order to create a more just world. Peace

As long as we're talking about movies and people that deserve Oscars, can we talk about how YA book-to-movie adaptations NEVER get the credit they deserve at the Oscars? "The Hunger Games" and "The Fault in Our Stars" are some of the greatest YA movies of all time, with Oscar-worthy performances by Jennifer Lawrence and Shailene Woodley, and yet... Hopefully, "The Hate U Give", given its subject matter and incredible performances, will fix that. Fingers crossed!

I read the book and loved it. I thought they would ruin the film since they usually end up changing stuff in adaptations but I was so surprised. Yes there were minor changes but it didn’t take away the message. There were a few scenes where I even felt like crying. This deserved to be nominated for the Golden Globes. Deserves to be nominated for an Oscar.

I grew up with black neighbors and they are my family. I learned a lot from them growing up and I knew about everything they went through. Everytime I was invited to their house for New Year's, 4th of July, or Halloween, I also took care to learn and understand who they were. They are my family. I am biracial and I experience the world differently then they do. This movie was more of an awakening to me about what they go through. I first heard about the talk when I was 12. I understood why they told their kids that, but I didn't understand how bad it really was. We are all human. We should treat each other as such.

Idk if I’ll get hate for this but does this really happen in black households? Is there a talk that black parents give to their kids like? I’m just wondering so I have a better understanding.
