This story is so inspiring, and as someone who has never had to experience racism the most eye-opening story I’ve ever had the privilege to watch/read. I’m very glad it’s on my school curriculum. It breaks my heart that people have to go through oppression like this

I experienced racism in the medical field I literally had a doctor tell my dad and tell him that I needed to be in a group home my dad was pissed obviously but that doesn’t change the fact that there’s a lot of fucked up stuff about this world and I gotta be prepared for anything also you know how I need my medications almost routinely? I am so angry with Hollywood changing the part with Khalil and the officer.In the book Khalil just went to the window and asked Starr if she was okay.HE DID NOT GRAB THE BRUSH JUST TO MAKE HER LAUGH.This is just a Hollywood add which completely change the story!!!This is so sad

Man this movie sent me out of the movie theater crying. It’s crazy how this movie came out almost 3 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I got picked up from school, told I was going to see this movie, and complained. But when I walked out, I saw everything and everyone differently yk? It truly had a message that would hit you hard if you understood it. And now this is one of my favorite movies.

I hate that Khalil reached for the brush and was joking around about it. That didn’t happen in the book. It’s a small detail, but it really matters. In the book, the brush is simply in the car. Having him reach in for the brush just gives the cop a reason to shoot him. I can’t get over that detail.

I just finish watched this movie, I've been crying for the entire movie. I am an asian and I didn't lives in the countries with this kind of problem. But I felt the pain that Starr got. She felt guilty but scared at the same time, she wants to do somethjng but she is afraid for what happen next and she still took all the risk, she is stood for her friends, family, especially for herself even tho the cope & the entire society in there didn't hear her voice, she still stood for the justice. THIS MOVIE IS A WHOLESOME, THE ACTING, THE ACTRESSES & ACTORS, THE SCENARIOS ARE EXCELLENT. I am in tear rn.

Whether it was in the movie, where the officer never told him to drop what he was reaching for before opening fire, or George Floyd, where the officer didn't listen to him beg for his life and lift his knee despite being handcuffed, officers are notoriously more likely to use deadly force on black people.

Whoa whoa.. there was no hairbrush in the book. Why does Hollywood always have to add their own flare. The whole point was that he didn't do ANYTHING to give the officer suspicion.

@@poly8899 but he didn't pick up the hairbrush in the book. in the movie he picked up the hairbrush and joked with it, but in the book he solely went to the window to ask if starr was okay. and that small detail completely changes what happened to khalil. in the book it is solely an unjustified killing because he was asking starr if he was okay. in the movie it is possible to argue that it was justified because the cop wasn't to know if it was a hairbrush or a gun. that's the one thing i really hated about the movie - as well as devante not being there - but apart from those two details, it was a powerful, emotional movie that i really loved.

This movie is talking about a serious message, yet some people are complaining about the actress being light skin. In fairness I've never read the book, but apparently no one is sure what Star looks like. On the cover it's a dark-skinned girl, but some say she was light others say dark. Black is black no matter what shade you are. I'm sure this pointless topic all started when black family comedies replaced a dark-skinned actress with a light-skinned one. I found that annoying myself as well, but this movie shouldn't be judged on whether the girls skin is too light. Being black isn't about the shade of your skin or where you live or how you talk. It's about being who you are.

Trin May23 yes it does. When you take mixed people and make them the face of black women, it’s a problem. It’s called colorism. It’s the same mentality of the house slave and the field slave. The light ones were the “preferred” and that’s a problem. It just farther spreads self hate unto black people. Dark skinned men and woman not wanting to have kids with somebody their complexion, because they think it’s ugly, out of fear of having kids with that complexion. It’s real. Which is why a lot of dark skinned people grow up wanting to be lighter, (I was in that group, but not anymore) because they associate it with being white, and therefore, better.

in my middle school ELA class we had book clubs for social issues. i was placed in the book club for The Hate U Give. We were supposed to read it in parts at a time but i got so invested in the book that i read the whole thing the same week we got it. its so eye opening and now i see the things my friends and family and even i do that are wrong. thank you, Angie Thomas, and any other writer who is bringing these issues to light. you're all saints.

This movie is not anti-police. It’s anti-police brutality. The main character had a lot of healthy conversations with her uncle who is a cop. This book also goes into why things are the way they are. Yes, it’s fiction, but it’s meant to being awareness to many true events.

I think police brutality exists but doesn’t happen that often. Like I know there are racist police offices I’m not denying that. But just for a minute put yourself in the place of a police officer chasing someone down saying “put your hands behind your back” and they aren’t listening. Now imagine that the person you’ve been chasing down after resisting arrest stops and starts to reach for something. Now what they’re reaching for may or may not be a gun, knife, etc but as a police officer fearing for his/her thinking that they’re about to pull a weapon out as the police officer with a gun are you going to wait to find out? Also during this ordeal how much does the race of this person matter with the greater context?

TEMM bruh smh. This is a movie 95% of movies are Fiction. Typically when it is a non-fictional movie. The producers will put the is a true story. But any ways. The real reason for my response was simply that in urban neighborhoods predominantly minority’s most of the police are racist and usually break the laws bend the truth and set up people who they feel are Thugs. The system is rigged for one race to win. The truth is in the pudding. I’m not speaking out of malice or hate. It’s the truth and it hurts people who are for the establishment in hand. Double Disappointment I feel your statement on white people getting killed too. You have to look at the numbers in it’s entirety. There are more white or Caucasians in our population. So when you look at how many Minority’s vs how many non minority’s are being killed the ratios are unreasonable and apparently nobody cares that minority’s are being exterminated by a racist regime who are paid to kill and get paid time off. I read the book and it really touched me. As a white from one of the most safest countries on earth (Nordic lands) it made me realize how badly things are still going on here and how there's still a lot of racism on this Earth. The book made me feel I should do something but it also made me feel so small. I guess all I can do and the best way to help the situation is to be open minded and do anything I can to stop racism and learn.

@adam zarbon I would definitely encourage people not to break the law but then why is it that even for a minor crime black people do i.e a teenager shop lifting due to his financial condition, the American police are fully on guard and ready to pull the trigger if in their perspective~"necessary" when arresting them like I don't get it because they are so calmly behaving like a human with a white law breaker and are at peace when arresting them. Don't even start with, it's coz black people act though with the police that doesn't make them shoot at a human being. Check out "When They See Us" about the Central Park 5 on Netflix if you haven't already. I cried out loud like the ugly cry. Crazy part is seeing white people still getting defensive when it could be so healing and empowering even for them to just say "I'm sorry" and change the behavior.

So the book illustrates the struggle of this girl as she tries to balance the pressures of being not-black-enough and too-black. Combing through the comments, I see people using the same arguments that make Starr uncomfortable in her neighborhood, school, and society. I'm really looking forward to the movie, and I'm hoping that we learn something about ourselves when we watch it.

I don’t understand why they changed the scene where the cop pulls him over, in the book Khalil never reached into the car to grab the hairbrush. By changing it I feel like it’s not giving the story justice, because if a person were to reach for something in their car in real life it would be a much different scenario than the one in the book and some people would think that the shooting may have been justified in some way, the thing that makes Starr’s story so messed up is the fact that they didn’t do anything wrong. If this was just a way to include the hairbrush in there they could’ve done it differently.

The real story, the one in the book, never had Khalil, the boy who was shot, grab the hairbrush. The only thing he did was check on Starr to asks if she was okay. I have no idea why the movie changed it because people who haven’t read the book will now interpret it wrong and may say the shooting was justified but that isn’t what actually happened. If you read the book you can clearly see that the police officer was being excessive and more aggressive than was necessary. The cop was not doing his job right. The reason everyone was protesting and rioting was because this was a 16 year old black kid living in a neighborhood that was known for drugs, violence, etc, and that was ultimately the reason he was shot, due to racial profiling the cop just assumed they were bad kids and they were up to no good. And let’s be honest if this were a white person or a person with light skin this would not have been the result, there are steps that need to be taken and there’s proper protocol for everything. Because he was a black man he was automatically suspected. And to the people who may say that the cop was scared for his life, that’s not a reason to take the life of a kid, of a living breathing person, because of an error in judgment. Cops are properly trained for those types of situations, and what the cop did in this story was clearly wrong and misguided. So no, no it was not his fault that he got shot, he didn’t point the gun at himself.

Gabby T. The movie appears to add more nuance but it really doesn't when you analyze it. He reached for an object but he never aimed it at the cop, he was facing the girl in the car the whole time. If a cop sees the slightest movement that's not even aimed at him and perceives it as a threat, he was already jumpy and thought they were potential threats to begin with. Besides, who wants a country where the slightest movement equals being shot?

BiteSize__ I could understand if the cop was literally right next to him, and interpreted a sudden movement at close range as an attack, the same way you'd be startled if I snuck up on you. Yet if I'm quite a few feet away from you and you can't stop, look, and assess the situation before firing a lethal weapon then you're just a jumpy scary coward. I legally own a firearm, I don't shoot the cat at the edge of my driveway at 4AM cause "it suddenly moved (even though it was 20ft. away from me) and I thought it was a threat".

This is one of the most powerful movies I’ve ever seen and it’s just amazing, it shows how hard it is to be black and how they judge you just for your skin color, this was an experience to watch and I loved the acting

After watching the movie I learned it isn’t just an issue between the black community and the cops but also an issue within the black community itself with gangs and drugs. It’s highlighted that there are good cops and bad cops, and it also showed that drugs and gang violence can tear a community apart. Every story has multiple sides and it is good to take it from different prospectives. It is not a movie about “Cops being evil” and it is also not a “Black people are beings that can do no wrong” I don’t want to spoil the movie, but please if you go and see it, do not take it as a hate message against cops. I will love to know everyone else’s opinion on the movie.

in terms of black female protagonist I love Amandla ...but in entertainment we always see zendaya or Amandla play these roles for black women ! I pray soon enough we can see other women of color get these roles because there are a lot of us who are as important and as credible we gotta represent all of our people not just the beautiful mixed black beauties because that’s what they are ❤️ I’m so excited for this and love her and can’t wait!

yann m YES YES EXACTLY. She's amazing but the author herself describes Starr as a brown skin black girl with kinky hair. And it's very annoying that other black actresses are over looked even when roles are SUPPOSED to be catered toward them

They are now working on a book to movie adaptation on the novel “The Sun is Also a Star” by Nicola Yoon and the main character is black and will not be played by Amandla nor Zendaya. I forgot the girl’s name but definetly go check that out.

I’m happy for her and Z representing us and zendaya even bought this up which is great that she recognizes that and is fighting for ALL of us beautiful brownskinned young women

It's not just black people. It's bad cops. I'm a white woman a white bad cop sided with my abuser. I get it I totally get it and I love this movie. It's unbelievable the lasting damage in the scars that you carry because of these bad cops. God help us all

Wednesday, March 17th @ 12 Noon Monday, March 22nd, @ 7:40 P.M *and* @ 10:25 P.M. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The FX channel is *_not_* a channel that you have to pay extra for (e.g. HBO, Cinemax, Starz, etc...), so if you have cable, you should already have FX. 🙂 (I watched it earlier tonight, and it was phenomenal !!)

I agree but that man who was shot asked for it basically. He pulled out the brush on purpose even with a smile. He didnt think before he did it. I wouldn't blame the officer at all.

Bey R well when a cop tells you to stay somewhere or your in the pressence of a cop and your in trouble if you move and out your hane in the car you have to be able to see what the cop was thinking tbh he had it coming although the cop shouldnt have shot him he could have taken another approach
