Toby Jugg, a fighter pilot shot down in combat, is now confined to his bed with little hope of walking again. He is also the heir to a considerable fortune - a fortune that is being administered by a board of trustees until he comes of age.
At night, he is becoming increasingly disturbed by a strange presence - a mysterious shadow thrown by the moonlight through a gap in the blackout curtains. He is convinced the shadow is cast by a malevolent and unnatural entity trying to get into his room. Toby is unable to convince anyone of the reality of this entity, and slowly comes to believe that there is a ploy against him, a plot to send him mad, or to make it appear that he is already mad in order to usurp his fortune. Is this some form of hallucination? Is this unearthly creature real or a product of his imagination? Are the people caring for him actually plotting his destruction, or are they sincerely concerned for a young man whose grip on sanity is steadily weakening?
With themes of love, madness, Communism, Satanism and Freemasonry, Wheatley builds his trademark atmosphere of menace, suspicion and supernatural dread.

Like any other book, you have to put this into its historical context, with the beliefs and class system of the day. I've loved Dennis Wheatley since I was in my teens in the 70s, and this was quite a captivating rendition.

I started to read Dennis wheatleys occult books 60 years ago, alas now my eyes are failing me I have to rely on the audio books so much enjoyment

As History Lover my introduction to Dennis Wheatley in my teens in 1970s were his French Revolution novels with Roger Brook They were surely his best novels although i was completely unaware then of other historical novels Until this week never knew about Duc de Richelieu series contemporary history Wheatley parents and own lifetime and wonderful way to learn history Sadly extracts from neither seem to be on Audiobook

Dennis Wheatley was a Brexiteer methinks. I read this as a boy and was thrilled by it. Genius.

Maybe the story gets better later one, but i stopped listing after an hour and half of fire and brimstone rant delivered by someone with sleep paralysis. I read a few of this writer's books back in the day , and they can be entertaining .He lived in a very different time and shouldn't be measured by today's standards. But man, this writer could make Tucker Carlson blush with his .'extreme conservative 'views'😅.

What you don't realize about Dennis Wheatley is. He wouldn't add all that fire and brindstone. If given a choice he'd Write how he intended. The English witchcraft laws were still in effect then And if he dared. To say the bad guys won or That the Christian religion wouldn't triumph over evil he literally could have been thrown in jail. Dennis Wheatley. Is a whistle blower but not an idiot He had to Christianize his books so that they would be published.

Lol I'm 50 minute in and Ive come to the comments to see if anyone else is bored. Can't relate to old books anymore as life has changed so much. Shame really
