I posted a comment a couple of years ago in regards to this video, saying how pretty these girls were and that their musicianship was superb, and after viewing this video again, I still would say the same thing. 😁😁😁😁😁 💕💕💕💕💕 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

This was from the Happening Band Contest on the Happening '68 TV show hosted by Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay. The show was originally broadcast in color. All the competing Happening bands mimed to a recording with VOX guitars, amps, and drums as VOX was the contest sponsor.

Love the choreography. Very original, never duplicated moves. They can't drive but they can do the hip slide.

At the very end Mark Lindsay says that they will be back in a moment with Boyce and Hart, who were big for a while back then. Just something I picked up on the audio and thought was kind of cool. These old shows spark all kinds of memories. Thanks for posting blacflag. A lot of people appreciate the time and effort you put in. I know I do.

I get a kick out of it every time the Debbie in front starts to cut loose, then pulls back. She reminds me of the girls in high school that I found fascinating but a bit intimidating, the ones who seemed to know something I didn't. Also . . . I notice that this was filmed in 1968. Great garage rock of this sort was well on its way to falling out of fashion.

This may have been one of the first all-girl groups to play instruments while performing and on their records, some fifteen years before the Go-Gos.
@johnnyaa8 жыл бұрын
These girls' ages ranged from 12-14. They were offered a chance to go out on tour but the moms nixed it (as somebody mentioned below also the record contract). Check out "I'm Crying Inside" also by the Heartbeats. Yes the blonde was definitely a looker and a half!
@witheringi94928 жыл бұрын
+johnny aa record contracts were obviously easier to come by then. They don't write and just barely play.
@johnnyaa8 жыл бұрын
+Withering i Lighten up bro! They were good enough to end up in first place on this variety show and continued to perform regionally for years. I don't think Elvis ever wrote a song either.
@witheringi94928 жыл бұрын
johnny aa yeah your right-It was gutsy for girls to get out there and even try in such a male dominated activity like pop music. Still it was a whole lot easier for bands to get ahead then it is now. The whole scene was so much more accepting. I never liked Elvis :)
@stevehardman46868 жыл бұрын
Actually, they were 12-14 when they started playing together, this was 2+ years later, so they are 14-17 here

While the boys in other bands were partying all night at the hotel they stayed at, these young ladies stayed in their room, rehearsed and rehearsed their song and routine. Guess what, they won. So it don't pay to get thrashed the night before an important show.

I remember they would have this segment on the show every week and feature different bands/singing groups and one of them would be picked the "winner." I distinctly remember one show where they had a little kid band called "Paula and the Pipsqueaks." They weren't even in junior high yet. They were matched up against these four black guys who sang soul. They were great, but they lost out to the little kids. Like that was a surprise.

There is a Cd available on Cicadelic Records called "Texas Girls of The 60's" with 25 cuts by the Heartbeats...The presentors or (creeps as they were described up above) , are none other than Mark Lindsay and Paul Revere the clip is from their TV show Happening 1968.
@YosenBMamma5 жыл бұрын
Excerpted from the ABC-TV variety show *_Happening 68,_* - hosted by *Mark Lindsay* and *Paul Revere.* - Where they won *_The Battle Of The Bands_* with this song. The mother/manager turned down a record deal with ABC because she wanted to keep the girls in school. Unfortunately they never got another deal.

Is this the Paul Revere and the Raiders daily summer show? I think it was called It's Happening and it came on in the summer of '67. I used to watch it every day with my brother...I remember on the show they would celebrate Wednesdays as if they were really special. they also had a lot of competing bands on the show. I remember one band called Moby Dick and the Whalers...haw!!!
