Jackson Meller Not easy, but doable and largely dependent on your speciality, your location, and your overhead’s willingness to accommodate. A ‘Shot crew will be gone way more than an engine crew, but they also make more money. If you work for an agency, you make base pay while contract crews only get paid when they are gone on fires. I worked on an engine for the Feds, and was super busy with initial attacks, but my district was along the I-5 corridor in a fairly populous area in Region 5. Another engine guy in a super remote area in a different state might have very different experience. From everything I’ve seen, I’m leaning toward a non-national resource helitack crew as far as balancing work-family and still making money. Primarily used for IA’s, larger response area for a better chance of more incidents and hazard pay for more situations. Other people might have more ideas. No matter what, you’re going to miss out on family stuff and a lot of bedtimes and dinners. Be prepared for that. That being said, I’ve never felt more pride in what I do and I wish I had discovered it sooner and skipped social work which is what I did before and went to college for.

Mexico, NZ, Australia and South Africa all show up (along with several other Canadian provinces) show up in Alberta to help fight! It is ALWAYS good to see the USA show up to help! Kenny Fey look into programs for the forest service at your nearest office. They have alot for high schoolers to set you up with a career not a job, learn about the prevention and spread the word. Take everything serious no matter how mundane or redundant it seems, you wouldn't be told it so many times if someone hasn't lost there life because of it. Also know going in you are not going to put that fire out on your own, you can try all you want but you won't. I was lucky enough to listen to the chief of the forest service speak, and he compared our job to ants. One single ant is feeble, weak, vulnerable, yet prepared to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and protect the queen, with no credit, or recognition . yet when you put hundreds or thousands together they are a force to be reckoned with and predators, or any unlucky thing to cross it's path will be eliminated. let that sink in, and ask yourself are you ready to work for somthing higher than yourself, for little or no credit just the gratification of knowing the greater good was worth your self sacrifice, and believe me you will sacrifice, whether it's relationship problems, or even just not being a kid for summer during college break. if your answer is no...than that is ok, but ifyour answer is yes, than I hope to see you out there.

You apply through USAjobs.com create a profile and a resume and in the fall usually september, october, november they will post jobs and you fill out the application. Getting hired is the hard part I suggest taking introduction to wildland fire classes, and get a job with a conservation corps to stand out.

God it's been years now but just not enough just yet. My son just turned 18 and man has talked about joining ever since I can remember. Now he's here with me, signed up rookie classes done, packtest completed and man am I proud. I came from a huge back ground of family members who served as wildland fire fighters. Look on USA Jobs. Search for the city or town that you live in and if they have openings they should be on there.

Trevor Kapral you need to start out by getting your S-130 & S- 190 certifications. Go to the ranger stations in your area and introduce yourself to the fire guys. They will give you all the advice you need. Set up your account on USAJOBS and apply.

It's hard to say it's one way or the other, since it's something difficult to measure because it's one of those things that differ based upon the individual's experiences. Given both are veteran preferred hires, but I suppose what it really comes down to is prior experiences with certain situations. Be it medical calls, campaign objectives, or task oriented actions. My best answer that I can give depends on what, if any, specific triggers on what the individual responds to.

Awesome question!,id love to see some research on it. I know with me brush fires in our area I've always felt "more at ease" because of being outside.

@@ohioboy5217 same here. I'm a structural firefighter and during brush fires I don't get as amped up. Being outside and able to breathe without an airpack is what I think helps. But that's just my personal opinion. And another thing I will add is alot of structural firefighters run medical calls and car wrecks as well. In my opinion those are more mentally strenuous than your average structure fire without entrapment. So that would be another thing to add to the table in that research.

Structural or Wildland? I am a Structural FF and we just get our Firefighter 1, most of us get our Firefighter 2 as well ( Some organizations like the one i am apart of require MAYDAY! and Haz-Mat Ops.; then go volunteer and better yourself, if you like the medical side get your EMT-B/Paramedic. Apply like crazy! You got this! As for now, contact your local FD and ask when the next volunteer Academy is. You typically will have to volunteer before hire. Now as far as Wildland i don't know too much about that but i imagine it is a similar (Maybe the same) Certs, and its a summer job for the most part. Not all Fire is started by humans. Fire starts in nature as well by itself and it's normal to let some of it burn. But there is property and human life that needs to be protected so some wildfires need to be controlled or put out. That's where the Wildland Firefighters come in.
