I'm happy you came to love the film! There's a mysterious quality to it, in addition to all the fine details, that makes this film endlessly re-watchable. I think Morris would have been a perfectly fine husband. He would have been It's cool that you are candid about not necessarily caring for it at first (I think this is common for many films), but that you came back to it with a more mature mindset and now you actually recommend it! I've read that De Havilland was the frontrunner for Best Actress that year, one of the first times where that category was foregone conclusion. The one-two punch of The Snake Pit followed by the Heiress was too much for voters - how could they not honor her? Films based on stage plays are often tricky to produce, and they can come off as "static" or "stagey" if not done right. William Wyler doesn't let it happen with this film, and his thoughtful direction keeps everything dynamic, considering its origins on stage. The film did win 4 Oscars, the most awarded film that year, but Ralph Richardson did not win an award. He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but that award went to veteran character actor Dean Jagger for "Twelve O'Clock High" (war film). I'm not sure why Richardson didn't win, but it's likely just a preference thing. I don't know that he SHOULD have won, but I do think his performance is better than Jaggers in his film. I haven't seen the others except for the guy from All the King's Men, which I guess didn't impress upon me that much because I can't recall anything outstanding about it. Aaron Copland also composed "Hoedown", which is sublime and something you should checkout. You may have even heard it before. Edith Head's (inspiration for Edna Mode in The Incredibles) first Oscar win started here (her second nomination at the time). She would win 7 more, and be nominated a total of 35 times!

I agree, this is a wonderful movie. Funnily enough Carol Burnett did a skit on it so I thought I'd catch the real (reel?) version. Everyone who commented on the skit said they loved the movie. As for not liking something the first time: I love Stephen King but could NOT get into his Mr. Mercedes series. Now, later, it's one of my favorites. Sometimes we need to be in the right frame of mind. In "Judgement at Nuremburg" Montgomery played the poor and simple minded man who kept showing the pic of his mother who had been killed. He absolutely stole the movie.

I definitely agree! I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found the movie to do a decent job following the story while also making some decent changes for the screen. Olivia definitely earned her Oscar here! 👏

Catherine already had $10,000 a year from her mother, which her father couldn't touch. In today's money, that was $350,000 - $400,000 A YEAR. Morris was so greedy, he thought he could get more!

This movie is an obsession to me. In the end, I think she should have taken him back. I do think the movie did not really make his out to be gold digger. I love this movie!!!!! If she accepted him, I do think he would have cared for her. Maybe I missed his totaly going for her for money. I watch this once a year.

I think Monty played it so well that you almost believe he would have taken care of her. If only he didn't desert her 😔

It was pretty clear he was a gold-digger in a movie as well as the book....
