One of my favorite lines ever. “I can be very cruel.., I have been taught by masters “. Her father was,as he once called Morris, beneath contempt! Oh how I love the Catherine character by Olivia in this. ❤

Olivia deHavilland's finest role in any movie, as a gentle, naive woman who's soul had been cauterised and blackened and who learned to survive at a very terrible cost. She will never leave that house, never have children or grandchildren, and will grow old and die alone and embittered. She will be rich but her future was stolen from her.

Not necessarily, she loved him but did her last cross stitch and moved on. Who knows she might of decided to get out and find someone else and have a family. That’s the thing we don’t know how old she is, well that would be my script for her, and Maurice ends up on the street

I doubt she ever got married but idk about the alone and embittered part. If anything she looks triumphant and free climbing those stairs. By getting "closure" with Morris the last shackle keeping her in the past (and the house) is gone, and now she can move on.

not everything in life has to be about procreating. Maybe it was her choice not to have children. I can relate to the character. People tend to like you for what you can offer them. If you have money they like u for that. It is a sad reality of life. No one likes you just for you. Either they are atracted to you or fid you witty or you conquered them.

I loved the movie from the time I first saw it when I was in junior high. I'm 76, so that was a long time ago. THIS IS MY FAVORITE LINE because she had been taught to be cruel by her father who was cruel to her. A great movie, an even greater book and a performance to celebrate. Olivia truly loved the best actress award and she won it for this role.

Was she really taught to be cruel, or just taught about the world and how cruel people can be? Now she has learned that the world can be unkind and how to fight for her self.

Olivia deHavilland was superb in this role and this is one of my favorite movies. I had always thought of her character that she was a woman worn down by lack of love who in the end cannot see any way to be herself except to retreat into a lonely world. Then I saw the Broadway production of the play with Cherry Jones and realized from her performance that the climb up the staircase at the end is not an end but a beginning of a journey for the character. Jones' performance of the role was almost the same as DeHavilland's but there were very subtle differences that led to this very different perspective on the character. I feel it was a privilege to see both great actresses in this role.

A great improvement on the final segment of the novel, "Washington Square." Besides that, I don't think Catherine's decision meant she had turned into an unfeeling, bitter bitch. She survived two men who treated her wretchedly, and she became a rarity in those days. She was an independently wealthy woman who had the luxury of choosing whether or not she wanted a man or two in her life.

I love this movie. It is kind of like similar to my life because I am also an heir with a sad end. However the story is opposite circumstances. I was once as naive and loving and with so much hope in life. But life put me in my place it seems. In my case my mom and grandma instilled distrust in me. My father unlike Catherine's praised me with compliments that gave me a false sense of worth. After they passed I was/ am unsuitable for the world as no one seems to be good enough for me. Also, I may not be good enough for the ones that I am interested in. The result is a life of solitude like Catherine's. An heir like her with no one to share my life and fortune with. THe hardest part is that when my loved ones existed I felt I was the one who did not let people in, so it was my choice. Now that they are all dead I realize that is them who want no part of me. At least with Catherine she had someone who was interested in her for her money. I wish I had that at least. But being gay/bi does not help either tbh
