The other thing you can do with the numbers, 2000 and above, and that is identify the class (or type).... 2××× are B class, 30xx are C1 class, 35xx are D1 class, 50xx are D2 class, 51xx are C2 class, 6xxx are currently all E class.... leaving 1-230 as Z classes, 231-300 as A classes, and the remaining as the various W class and heritage fleet. Until the G classes arrive to be numbered in the 7xxx range.

I volunteer at the Ballarat tramway museum, and I’m slowly figuring out names to give all the trams. I have three I’m settled on so far: #13 is Sampson, because the spring on the pole that connects to the overhead wiring is stronger than most of the fleet. #33 is augustus, the windbag, because the air compressor on that tram goes on much longer than most of the other trams. And finally, #38 is backwards Barry, because of all the trams in our fleet, he’s the only one where the “A” end and “B” end are back to front.

This is something that also applies for carriages on Victoria’s train network while with the Comeng trains you can see what number a three car set is by removing the first 1 from the trailer carriage number! Also for some reason the Comeng motor car M388 ended up in Werribee station as a refreshments shop in 1988 which was roughly a year before the last batch of Comeng trains were delivered! :)

trains in UK also have this if there is 5 digits it means the first 2 numbers are the type example: 91131 91 means its a class 91 but 6 digits the first 3 numbers is the model example: 380106 380-class 380 the 1 in 106 means its the /1 subclass which is 4 cars a /0 is 3 carriages long
