Fort Verdala, also known as Verdala Barracks, is a fortified barracks in Cospicua, Malta. It was built by the British in the 1850s within part of the bastions of the 17th century Santa Margherita Lines. The fort was used as a prisoner-of-war camp in both World Wars, and was later known as HMS Euroclydon.

Steve - the Capuccini Naval Cemetery at Kalkara is well worth a visit. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission do a fantastic job of looking after it. I try to visit the cemetery at least once a year and lay a poppy spray on the graves of two men from my home town, Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, who were killed in Malta in 1942 and 1944. Corporal A.T Tapping (Tom), died 9 February 1942, aged 28. He was in the RAF and served at T’Qali. My late Mum was at school with Tom, although she was a few years younger. The other person was Surgeon Lieutenant J.C. (John) Ballantyne, a Royal Naval Reservist, who died on 25 December 1944 aged 30. The CWGC produced a leaflet about Capuccini Naval Cemetery and I picked one up on my last visit there on 30 December 2019. The leaflet details a tour and is very interesting. There are civilians and children as well as RAF, Naval and Army personnel buried there. There is also a Japanese memorial. It’s well worth a visit to this peaceful and very well kept cemetery.

I love history especially ours of course. I pass from in front of the Verdala gate every day during my daily morning walk. Well done👏👏

That was a good thing showing the splendor of this barracks but this is the place where i used to live nearby . During the first world war the barracks was used as a prison of war camp . It housed Admiral Donitz when he was captured while serving in a submarine . He was still a common sailor at the time. It served as a resting place for sailors that their ship was at the docs for repairs. As children we used to play football in a yard on the other side of the fort and used to call the sailors who would be sunbathing on the roof to throw us sweets . Where you showed the Girl Scout Post was the Barracks canteen . There when we as children used to go play in there was a big graffiti of Stalin and Churchill and Roosevelt on one of the walls. The barracks is also known as HMS Euroclydon , and is part of the Margherita Lines. It was built to cover the vast open space between the two fortifications Margherita and Cottonera Lines .

Hi Steve, Thank you for this wonderful video. I've been to the Kalkara naval cemetery back in the early 1960's just before I migrated to Australia at the age of 14. I never been to verdala Bastian and I originally lived in Zabbar which is the next town from the Bastian and never been back to Malta and you certainly showed me the rest of what malta looks like. Thank you kindly for these fantastic videos. Please try and make another video of the naval cemetery when it's open, it's really worth it.

Lovely video 🎦!! Short in duration but long in history 🇲🇹 📙 🇬🇧. "Fuq il- Verdala"/Bormla, actually is the name of that Place/xBarracks. Like I suspected, it belongs to the "Housing Authority" - LUCKY tenants 🏘 !!. "IHS" means "Jesus" (first 3 letters of Greek alph'bet - also seen on crucifix).I think that's StMargerita with Our Lady in the grotto (?). C'wealth cemetery still looks interesting - it's worth a visit. Tanx "MW"! . Tanx & see you tomorrow Steve 😉 ☀. . Cheers 👍 🇲🇹 🇪🇺 ©.

@EnglishmaninMalta
@EnglishmaninMalta 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is anywhere outside ...Say that it's a bit of a grey area if you are out alone you could get away with it !! But you could be stopped and fined if you are unlucky to come across police, which are now out and about most weekend and holidays the Law is you must wear a mask outside, only allow to take off in bars and restaurants when eating and drinking ...Sad times !!
