my university has something called "meatless mondays" in which the cafeteria is wiped clean of meat for a day, which is cool i guess, but i really wish there were more voluntary vegetarians/vegans at my school. we're very focused on social and environmental justice, yet i don't see a lot of awareness about the meat industry..."meatless mondays" are as practical as the proverb "give a man a fish...." it's a temporary solution. informing students of reasons why the eating meat so often (or at all), at least in supplement to meatless mondays, would be more effective and potentially reduce meat consumption among the student population in the long run.

it's takes 30 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef.... if it is grass-fed. which is all i buy. Any argument against industrial modern beef is not an argument against the traditional natural practice of raising beef. Just like I wouldn't argue against vegetarianism based on unsustainable monocropping and agricultural practices that dominate 99% of plant agriculture worldwide. You know what requires 500 gallons of water per pound? bread.

eating less meat is a good place to start but a terrible place stop... the issue is most people have slightly decreased their consumtiom of animals and now have a false sense of justification so they don't feel bad about eating animals for the rest of the week. from an environmental stand point switching to chicken or turkey is a better option than eating less beef. but the best option is just to go vegan.

Converting from the CAFO production system and global distribution system to a 100% grass fed system within regional distribution systems would free up enough cropland that, if converted to biomass plantations, would offset 3-4X more greenhouse gas emissions than all the cattle produce in the US alone, and that excludes the additional emissions from the distribution system. In other words, by converting to pasture-finished beef we can produce all the beef we currently consume while offsetting all the emissions and free up millions of acres that can be used to offset other greenhouse gas emissions. Industrial agriculture is the problem, not meat.

Green Goblin slaughtering animals for food is not violence. theres nothing vegans can say to convince the whole world that it is. i do agree there is carnist propaganda, if people continue to make excuses to eating exorbitant amounts of meat instead of including lentils, when this is obviously hurting the planet, yes i agree that is carnist propaganda. but eating meat in and of itself is not carnist propaganda, it is a tradition over 10,000 years old, that has given perfect health to mankind.

Green Goblin i understand why you feel so strongly. what you have to understand is, Americans have been lied to regarding saturated fat. look up the traditional diets of tribal africans, native americans, australian aborigines, pacific islanders, etc. they all ate meat with the fat and had perfect health, no diabetes, no heart disease, low rates of cancer, etc. of course, the meat they were eating was very different than the meat we eat.

Its baffling how almost every good video I manage to find on this topic goes downhill at their conclusion by appeasing meat consumers, compromising because "we don't have to give up meat, just cut down a little bit" since the idea of promoting actual change and effort is apparently unreasonable for people who've just been told we're destroying the planet through our consumption of animal products. Earth will die right under our feet through our choice to accept inaction.

They're going in the right direction, but this video has many flaws. To name a few, it states that pigs & chicken's don't produce methane, which is incorrect, & they push the misguided & common myth (which is beautifully debunked in a movie you may have heard of, called Cowspiracy) that "grass fed" cows produce less methane than "grain fed" cows; of course the reality is exactly the opposite, by many times over. They also mislead viewers by ignoring the facts that all other animal agriculture also unsustainably uses huge amounts of water & feed,contributes to massive air/water pollution, & benefits huge from corporate welfare. There are many great short videos that explain the realities of animal agriculture, but this sadly isn't one of them.
@ashevillecat
@ashevillecat 4 жыл бұрын
Good points. However the amount of methane that pigs and chickens produce is practically insignificant compared with ruminants. You produce methane too lol Grass-finished cows do produce more methane than grain-finished ones, but the millions of acres of cropland that would be freed up by converting to grassfed livestock could be used to offset at least 3 times the greenhouse gas emissions of all cattle in the US alone by converting them into biomass plantations. Saying that "All other animal agriculture also unsustainably uses huge amounts of water & feed,contributes to massive air/water pollution, & benefits huge from corporate welfare" is totally misleading. It is true for industrial agriculture but not for regenerative organic practices. All our livestock can be produced on pasture, some crop varieties and livestock breeds use much less water, regenerative organic practices should not cause any air or water pollution and generally doesn't benefit from ag subsidies/corporate welfare. Industrial agriculture is the problem, not meat.

Kudos for significantly reducing your environmental impact. Many people are becoming "Flexitarian" aka "Reducitarian" for the environment. The most effective version of that besides reducing overall, is to completely boycott beef, and preferably also dairy, since cows have the biggest negative impact and use the most resources like fresh water. However, going fully plant based has the biggest impact.
@someguy2135
@someguy2135 11 ай бұрын
Can anyone refute any of these compelling reasons to boycott animal products? 1-Your own health (vegans are less likely to get the most common chronic, deadly diseases) 2-Helping to end animal agriculture would reduce the chance of another pandemic & other zoonotic diseases 3-Helping to end animal ag would reduce the chance of the development of an antibiotic resistant pathogen. 4-Animal ag wastes a huge amount of fresh water. Each vegan saves 219,000 gallons of water every year! 5-Animal ag is a major cause of water pollution 6-Animal ag is a major cause of deforestation 7-Animal ag increases PTSD and spousal abuse in the people who work in slaughterhouses. Workers in meat packing facilities often endure terrible, dangerous working conditions. 8-Animal ag is a major cause of the loss of habitat and biodiversity 9-Needless killing of innocent, sentient beings cannot be ethically justified. 10- It is the single most effective way for each of us to fight climate change and environmental degradation. 11- Longer lifespan. 12- Healthier weight (vegans were the only dietary group in the Adventist Studies that had an average BMI in the recommended range.) 13- A healthy plant based diet significantly reduces the chances of ED later in life, and even 1 meal can improve bedroom performance 14- Vegetarians and vegans have lower rates of dementia later in life 15- A plant based diet could save money! You could reduce your food budget by one third! 16-A fully plant based diet improves the immune system according to a study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition Prevention & Health 17-A fully plant based food system would greatly reduce food borne illnesses like salmonella 18-A fully plant based food system would be able to feed millions more people. Our population is growing! 19-A fully plant based food system would save 13,000 lives a year from the air pollution caused by animal agriculture, according to a study 20- A vegan world would save 8 million human lives a year, and $1 trillion in health care and related costs (Oxford Study) Links for some of these are at my channel under "About." If you doubt any of them, I would be glad to cite evidence from credible sources to back them up. KZfaq only allows a certain number of links at my channel. After I made my list, I found this video with his own list which overlaps mine. He cites evidence from credible sources in the description. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q8lmgM2e2JfWmIE.html

Sandra Carli I think she mostly said that because some Americans are so unwilling to give up meat. If it did happen it would help but definitely not in the long run, but people that still choose to eat meat nothing we say will change their minds. It's so easy for some people to just drop everything & be vegan. I didn't do a transition period I became vegan after I watched one video for others it doesn't impact them the same way sadly..

Actually it would, farmers and ranchers use what is called a stocking rate, which is the amount of acres of grass it takes to raise a cow and her calf. In eastern Kansas the average stocking rate is around 10 acres per cow/calf pair. In drier climates it can be as high as 100 acres per cow/calf. So if we went to raising all cattle strictly on grass you can only imagine how much more land area we would have to utilize to raise all of the feeder cattle that we produce.

@@supermario69kraftgami23 But it also frees up all that cropland used to produce their feed. One grain-finished cow requires 1 acre of pasture (where they spend the first 6-9 months of their lives) PLUS another quarter acre to grow the feed. Meekseek 40% of the planet is B12 deficient. Vegans roughly make 3% of the world population. You don't wanna take pills, you can get injections our sublingual supplement. By the way, B12 is artificially given to cows, wether you want it or not, you're actually getting those pills. So the world's dying now... What are you waiting for?

Very interesting but to fully comprehend this one needs to look at the money system that drives our economy. Most of our money is created by private banks and loaned to us at interest. This control of the reward system gives those banks a lot of power. They give money to factor farms because they can make big returns even if they trash the planet doing it. People who engage in humane clean farming are less attractive and get less capital for research to improve clean methods

"Improve cleaning cost" good point but I don't think you k ow the whole story. Recently I found out more and more about big companies like Tyson, and Ibp (I'm not sure of the name) for example. Most farmers get into huge debt and contracts with these companies. I suggest watching Food inc. It talks a lot about the problems in the food industry, the USDA and FDA, and families that have been affected.

Fyi a cow is a female that has given birth. Beef cattle consists of steers and heifers. Steers are castrated males, and heifers are females that have never given birth. So there actually are no "cows" in feedlots. Currently there are 89 million head of cattle including dairy cows. This number is the same that it was in the 1950's in the US. GLobally the numbers are the same that they were in the 1970's. So no there hasn't been a big increase in cattle population or consumption of beef.Beef consumption is actually down. Chicken and farmed fish consumption is up significantly and accounts for the increases in meat consumption. Additionally contrary to even more misinformation presented here most cattle are not eating grain in feed lots. Of that 89 million, at any given time only 14 million beef cattle are in feed lots where they go to as yearlings (at one year of age). Another 9 million are dairy cows mainly in dairy CAFO's. Where are the other 66 or so million other head of cattle: the bulls, cows, calves and replacement heifers? Eating grass, the majority (85%) of which isn't suitable for growing crops. Converting non-arable land used for grazing cattle and other ruminants watered by "green" water (rainfall) to crop land requires more "blue" or ground/surface water to be diverted and used, so the REAL environmental impact of water use is worse for crops than it is for cattle. Water foot prints are often pretty meaningless when assessing environmental impacts.Most people cite these water foot numbers, like the case here, without any understanding of how water foot print numbers are derived or what they actually represent. Grass fed and finished cattle have even less of an impact water wise on these natural ranges and pastures. Such cattle actually improve the soil infiltration rates by improving the soil health when properly managed. This means any rain that does fall is utilized more effectively with less run off . Healthy untilled soils with perennial grasses and roots also do two other things, they sequester carbon and bank methane. Methanotrophs in healthy soils capture atmospheric methane, so in reality, the entire impact of enteric methane belched by cattle is offset by carbon sequestration and methane oxidation. At worse, cattle when properly managed on grasslands are GHG neutral. As for deforestation in the Amazon just for cattle, this is the grossly oversimplified representation often made. There are many other factors involved including agriculture for CAFO pigs/chickens, agricultural for man, sugarcane for ethanol, mining, timber, political corruption and land speculation. Sugarcane is 10 times the yield of soy, none of Brazil cattle eats any of the soy (or corn). Cattle in Brazil eat grass. In Brazil only 2.5 mil head are in feedlots. 55% of sugar cane crops goes to making ethanol.

This video was great until the end. We need to completely cut out meat from our diets. It's too late for us to simply cut out animal products once a week. With the human population increasing at tremendous rates, we all either become vegan, or destroy our planet.

+Chris Lowe You're right that lots of heavily processed foods, such as some meat subs, aren't great for the planet. What I should've said is a whole foods, vegan diet. But processed food doesn't even come close to the environmental impact that animal agriculture does. Studies show that animal agriculture is responsible for up to 51% of greenhouse emissions. Compared to transportation (cars, buses, train, boats and planes) make up 13%. And all it takes for half of our greenhouse emissions to practically disappear is to stop consuming animal products.

+Jack Dempsey polarizing views don't really contribute to the cause. We need to advocate and encourage *less* consumption because taking an absolute vegan approach actually annoys people to the point where they consume more out of spite. I used to be one of those annoying people, but now I try to lead by example.
@zZjak793Zz1

+Randy Plett It didn't annoy me. I was working on organic animal farms. Helping with slaughters, and thought I was doing things right. Then came across new information and that was the end of it. People need to open their minds. The planet is the one who is really getting annoyed and has the ability kick us all out.
@AlexOvechkinSucks
@AlexOvechkinSucks 8 жыл бұрын
+Jack Dempsey that's nice. Of course people need to open their minds, but they won't if this kind of polarization and extremism actually closes their minds. Extremists and alarmists don't have the leadership skills needed to actually change the way the world works because they often lack empathy, which in turn prevents people from realizing there are some good ways to improve their diet. I prefer to take a more positive approach, and appeal to the possibility of better health, more energy, and cost savings. If you just tell them the sky is falling, they will tune you out.

there you go again. the 1% are out to get us and it is a giant conspiracy to invoke carbon taxes. arghhhhhh. wake up the elites have been hiding and putting out misinformation for years. ExxonMobil cover up goes back to the '70s and some say before that. the Koch brothers are still funding groups that act as deniers and fight any climate change mitigation. you are either a troll, a halfwit or work for a group that is paid for the Koch brothers. I would like to think one of the first two options. wake up and smell the science. and your comments that you were vegan for years is very doubtful, if you were vegan for the ethics you wouldn't revert, if you were vegan for the environment then realistically that is a new phenomenon and so is being vegan for the health benefits and so you wouldn't have been vegan for years. so I've decided. your just a troll.

Course information. From newborn to pound of packaged meat in a supermarket, 'mass-produced' leaves less a mark than small-farm organic meat. mostly this boils down to the fact that small farms produce small batches of meat, which are generally trucked around. this results in a high footprint per pound compared to mass-produced meats which are also transported in bulk.
