Every bowling lane has a hidden oil pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards finds out what that means.

Every lane has a pattern. In this episode of Vox Almanac, Phil Edwards explores how they change the game.
Bowling isn’t just about a great ball and good form - if you want to understand the sport, you have to understand the lane.
Every bowling lane, including the one in your neighborhood alley, is coated with an oil pattern to protect the wood. But these patterns aren’t just for protection - the way in which oil is applied to the lane can affect the speed and direction of your ball.
These patterns are so important that recreational bowlers and professional bowlers bowl on vastly different patterns - the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) even classifies the patterns it uses in tournaments.
Phil Edwards met with professional bowler Parker Bohn III at his childhood bowling alley, Howell Lanes in Howell, New Jersey. He guided Phli through the complex strategy a pro bowler uses when encountering different oil patterns. Not only do they have to assess which pattern is in use, but they also have to judge how that pattern changes as the oil shifts and slides over the day. Knowing how to play a specific lane can be the difference between a title and second place.
But these patterns aren’t just for the pros - they’re relevant to recreational bowlers as well. Watch the video to see how you can use these patterns to step up your game.

I’ve been bowling for 14 years and a girl on my high school team was standing on the 39th lane out of 40, and she threw it over both lanes and down the side of the alley to the back of the house by the pins, but not on a lane.

Used to work in a bowling alley as the guy that maintained the machines and the lanes. The house oil pattern in this video was most common for every day bowling near the weekends (kids birthday parties, college kids on a saturday night, etc). However around the middle of the week there were league bowlers that usually requested special oil patterns (heavy on the right and decreasing to none on the left, or it would be heavy in the middle and thinning out to the sides, a "Christmas tree" pattern, etc). That pattern changed every day and the lanes would get stripped twice per week. Sometimes a new oil pattern covers an old oil pattern if the lanes were not stripped of the oil. If I remember right, lanes got stripped Monday and Thursday at the alley I worked. Other days new oil was just placed on old oil. If the oil patterns are important to you, you may want to find out which ones they do each day, what days have league bowlers, and when the lanes get stripped. However, most of the time my boss told me not to tell people what the oil pattern was (but to this day, not sure why he told me that) Oh, and one day I was stripping the lanes and a screw got trapped underneath and put a deep groove in lane 6 that it seemed nobody noticed. Nobody said anything but you may want to look for things like that because I sure didn't say anything.

It's good to talk to another pin boy. I worked my way through school on bowling machines- at two different houses and as a roving mechanic. I only worked on AMF machines, not Brunswick. I didn't work on the lanes because they were done manually by one guy with an industrial floor polisher. As to your comment about why someone might want to keep quiet about the particular oil pattern a house uses, I've talked to several owners about this and have some insight. The most probable reason is that the owner feels that information is proprietary, not so much if a standard pattern is always used, but especially if unusual patterns are used for different occasions. For example, I worked for one house that kept the lanes loaded with oil in the middle and dry on the edges with a distinct edge pointed directly at the pocket. His reason was that the average bowler likes to score well and will come back again rather than someplace else. Everybody knows this, but the degree to which an owner goes is a competitive difference that some more serious or more experienced bowlers don't appreciate because they know their scores are inflated and would rather not return. Some owners I've talked to think that if taken too far, such practices border on unsportsmanlike behavior. Another reason is that a house needs to keep itself certified for "official" league and other scores, and if they get caught exceeding limits then entire leagues might leave and go to other houses. Same is true with some tournaments, and of course for PBA events. Finally, if word gets out about how a particular house does things, a snowball-down-a-hill situation could emerge and then individuals and may be entire leagues start asking for specific conditions and at some point the owner may have to start saying no. All the best.

I'm in the UK but used to look after twenty four lanes of AMF machines, ball returns and lanes on a daily basis, really enjoyed the job and part of my daily maintenance was servicing four machines and then testing them, we used to dress the lanes every day before open and twice on a wednesday when the evening "scratch" league would require highest quality performance from the lanes and machines, loved the job but hated working in the leisure industry.

As someone who has been bowling competitively for about 13 years there's so much that goes into the sport that most people would call us insane for knowing. There are even actual classes that coaches have to take in order to coach professionals or even collegiate. Granted to be a good bowler you don't really need to know all the intricate stuff but it comes in handy especially if you want to help your teammates or even go into professional or collegiate.

This video was about oil, but one important piece not mentioned is the actual ball itself. There is a weight inside the ball. A house ball will have the weight in the very center. This is to help amateurs keep it straight in the middle of the lane. Bowlers who use their own ball, have the finger holes drilled in a certain spot so that the weight is off center. In the video he talks about the ball hooking back to the pocket once it passes the oil. This is helped by that off center weight inside the ball. There is definitely a certain wrist action in throwing a curve ball, but the majority of the movement to that sweet spot in the pocket is done by the off-set weight bringing it there. You just have to make sure you have thrown the ball so that weight reacts at the right time.
@kawaiioverlord1082

Agreed mate, i kept noticing the gaps in little explanation on the ball as well since the game is really a combination of ball + ball surface + lane condition + lane material (they said wood but in Aus, most are synthetics these days, the last wood lanes in the area were killed off a few years ago) + speed + hook + position of release from the approact, etc I guess it's kinda one of those things where you have to skip a few things since you'll end up making a 1:30h video one a single subject really since it's a sport, it has many many components that make up how it's played and how to stratergies for it
@ErrantChordier
@ErrantChordier 5 жыл бұрын
you have a point, but I believe it is implied to be talking about competitive bowlers who have practiced their technique and are using their own ball, not house balls. As I understand, people who are reasonably good using their own ball can average 210 on house oil patterns, but on pro patterns it drops to like 160-170 for the same people
@katiepage8049
@katiepage8049 5 жыл бұрын
There is so much more to the technology of bowling balls than the average person realizes and most likely they don’t care about even though a bowler may find it fascinating. Plus the oil patterns are bit easier to explain.
@Kavlingesucker

It the weight is not off center by definition. A bowling ball is made out of 3 parts, shell, core and some stuff inbetween that i dont know what it is made of x) The core in an agressive ball is asymetrical to tempt the ball to rotate in a specific direction and a "spare ball" doesnt have a "core" at all, just a weight as any type of ball you can find in a bowling alley! :)
@ryanbradleyrankin
@ryanbradleyrankin 5 жыл бұрын
.......Actually The core of a bowling ball accounts for about 30% of the total hooking power. The Coverstock (the shell of the ball) and the surface prep (sanded with 500/800/1000/1500/2000/3000/4000 grit paper and/or polished) accounts for most of the balls hook. Take a typical plastic ball and slap a big assymetric core meant for max hook power you wont get much out of it. Different coverstocks achieve more or less grip by being spongier and/or absorbing oil as it goes down the lane. The layout (where the fingers are drilled in relation to the core) does have a noticable effect on the balls motion but is estimated in standard ranges to effect 5-10% of a balls performance. 70% Cover+Surface Prep. 20% Core 10%Layout.

The reason why you aren't supposed to go there is obviously because the lane has oil.If you don't slip that is because the oil has been dried up/are moved towards different boards. The lane after the foul line are obviously supposed to be used only for the oil,reference,"sticky" notes (Rectangle/Circular size),and the ball (etc.) Just make sure you tap on this comment and press the reply button,that way I can know if you have any other question.

One of my balls was hugging the gutter down to the edge, and my coach and I thought it would just either fall into the gutter or merely touch that corner pin. The oil helps you a bit but it's worth mentioning and it wasn't said here the house balls at pretty much every bowling alley are plastic or cheap urethane, weighted without too much differential balance, and drilled traditionally (not for fingertips). They're totally fine for fun or throwing straight balls but they're really not going to hook much at all. Best to just try to get that smooth release and point where you want it and that's your best bet.

I need to understand how to not get my bowling ball in the gutter first...

Your accuracy is in your approach. Walk on a 'tight rope' keep your hips perpendicular to the lane and shoulders squared up. Drop your arm into your second step pull it back and let gravity bring it forward like a pendulum.

Back when I was bowling quite a bit, every regular league bowler knew about the oil patterns. It's not that each lane has a hidden pattern. The owner can change that pattern night after night. You might have a great mark figured out one night but it can be totally different the next. When you'd take your practice shots the big thing was to try to figure out what that night's pattern was. Also, if a particular bowler would start hitting a lot of high games then the owner would change the pattern. Also, as the night goes on, the oil dries and you start getting more hook. The only people that don't know about oil patterns are the non-league bowlers that just show up once every few years for a night out with the kids.

fyi the reason why bowling centers tell you not to cross the foul line is because of the oil and all that liability stuff too

that other guy throwing the ball into the air to land on the lane with a bump is actually destroying the woodwork on the lane! SECURITY: KICK HIM OUT!
