Android 10+ has the possibility of attaching a system level EQ or DSP which Android 9 and below do not have. That means, with Android 10+, you can use Wavelet or Poweramp EQ (not the player) to (P)EQ Qobuz or any third party application. This is a huge benefit for EQ users.

Forget the M17, it does not compare to the N8ii. I have tested it. You really pay what you get.

@@greaterbayareahero1401 agree. I sold my m17 and got the n8ii because there is no comparison. M17 is dry , flat and almost lifeless. N8ii is the most musical dap I've ever heard but also carries through more technical prowess than the m17.

Any guesstimates on price yet? There is not much that would move me from my N8 to a new one,as i am very pleased with it How much onboard memory does this have? Are there dual micro/sd cad slots this time? has the library/search function improved? & other niceties IE Add to playing now function? Dual micro sd slots may push me over the edge tho PS What is the DISPLAY screen size? Cheers

People can say what they want about iTunes, but man did it make creating Playlists easy. My Cayin didn't have the Hiby player (just the Cayin Player), but I'm having trouble trying to make playlists on this thing. You can create folders in your SD card, but if you go to that folder, you can't organize by album or custom order songs, it'll just be by filename rather than metadata. And it looks like there's some work to understand how to create a playlist (haven't figured that out yet). None of this was in its manual for their custom player made for the device. Good player, but "user friendly" it is absolutely not for me.

I'm fairly happy with RS6 and LP6 Gold is my go to when I want some intense listening, I'm curious on N8ii and was waiting for your take specially considering your intimate insight of Hugo 2 and N8.

The Lp6 Ti is a very high quality retrieval player with very neutral sound, hitting all the highs. The sound is much thinner but technically precise. The N8ii is a different flavour of sound. If you like a more fuller, warmer tube sound focused on the mids and vocals this one is the best on the market right now. It has a very wide sound stage and still technically very detailed as well.

@Currawong thanks for this video! Your mention of Roon running bit-perfect caught my eye. I am on the look out for roon-ready DAPs, and none are listed beyond a limited # of A&K DAPs, which sound great but have a rather annoying Ux. Would controlling Roon play from this device deliver original resolution from Roon core (e.g. 24/192 or DSD) to this device? that's pretty valuable to quite few users out there like me.. also, given your mention of Anroid 9 choice, would using Roon on a newer Android 10 device like Shanling M9 limit the resolution played on the locally installer roon app? (why?) sorry for long questions, and thanks :)

Roon Remote does not run bit-perfect on Android, unfortunately.

@@goldwerger Even though it is limited to 44.1KHkz when converted from Roon to play on the N8ii the sounds is still very good with MQA. But if you want to avoid the downsampling put in a HQPlayer as a bridge to upsample it. If the slight difference bothers you just download to the microSD and play locally. I have a 1TB microSD card and it's super fast in reading which I am so surprised.

which way should i use to pair the n8ii to a wa7 3rd gen? i want to check if the n8ii improves the sound of the wa7. i thought about either type c from n8ii to wa7 usb, or 4.4mm from n8ii to wa7 rca in? any benefits of 1 way over another sonically or maybe volume control? (the wa7's volume is lacking sometime so a volume boost would help). thanks! : )

Were you sent this to keep? If so, do you just end up with a box full of DAPs that remain unused while you daily drive your favourite DAP? Or do you sell/giveaway your less used models? Interested in what it's like when you accumulate too much gear.

It's on loan and will go to another reviewer at some point. Anything else that is given usually sits in a charging station and is used for comparisons, for headphone or earphone reviews, BT earphones or as a digital transport for other gear in for review as required. Selling "review samples" is considered highly immoral and will get you blacklisted. Anything that has been discontinued and is no longer needed I give away.

If you have $3500 to throw away on an amp (not a very good one at that) go for it. I would go with the Chord Mojo 2 and save myself like 2K and you still get an amazing dac/amp.

Hi. Ergonomy is important on these small devices. When you navigate in "folder mode", does it display the complete name of the title ? Does it scroll to display it completely ??? Thanks for the information.

Since any Android-based music player should work on the N8ii, you can use whichever you like the ergonomics of. You can also download the Hiby Music player and try it for yourself on your phone -- either iOS or Android.

Even though the review is favourable to N8ii, comparing the Hugo 2 and M17 is like comparing a Macintosh MA9000 to a SP2000. We should be comparing DAPs - portable players please. No. One will be carrying a Turntable with a Hugo 2 in the streets lol.

The Hugo 2 comparison was one of the most requested, but point taken. Some people feel that the N8ii is too large as it is.

It would be good to compare to SP2000T or any other tube based DAP. But we all know that in terms of tube DAP Cayin is already miles ahead of the pack. I suppose even comparing to the LP6 gold would be different because they both try to attain a different flavour of sound.

With the Cayin, yes, as the crosstalk will be lower from the 4.4mm output.

Not hearing the only faults i can see 1. The connections being on the bottom is an odd choice If i am carrying it in my shoulder bag etc,i can`t put it in the right side up because i would put pressure on the cables,but upside down is putting pressure on the volume knob 2. Just 1 micro sd slot these days is an odd choice & in saying so i don`t need anyone to tell me that a 1 TB card is enough These are not deal breakers, but this and a better search and add to playing now function were the only things i was hoping for, because i am already sold on the sound. Even the N8 cannot be topped on sound So is the search function the same on this? It was the weakest part of the N8 That and no way to "add to playing now" function is a bummer i would love to add a song to playing now, it`s a way more convenient method for the way i and many listen to music Can we now add to playing now? It does seem an odd choice to use that DAC a t this price when IE Ibasso uses the same DAC and tubes? At a fraction of the price?

Very good points. I don't know in detail for some of this, but my understanding is: 1. Top or bottom -- you'll end up annoying someone. You can always use the screen rotate function to reverse it. In the leather case, the volume knob is slightly protected, so I don't think it's an issue so much. 2. I think there's an issue with Android that causes problems with 2 micro SD card slots. FiiO had this problem with the original M11 which had two. I'll check with Cayin though, they would know for sure. You can always add storage via USB. I've seen some weird adaptors that allow attaching micro SD cards neatly. 3. You can download Hiby Music and check the features on your phone first. Otherwise, you can use other Android players on it. 4. It's not just that the N8ii uses the Korg Nutube, but the quality of the components and the complexity and care in creation of the design are a huge factor here. That being said, I don't consider $3k+ DAPs to be good value at all.

Hello, can I ask lets say a high-end IEM has frequency response between 5hz-40.000lhz. So, if I connect this IEM to a dap/dac player, the frequency response still will be between 5hz-40.000khz or if it depends on if dac/dap have frequency response between 20hz-20.000khz, the frequency response of IEM will only be between 20hz-20.000khz not 5hz-40.000khz?

I sold my m17 and got the n8ii purely because my EE Legend Evo sounded completely average on the m17 and sounds like a complete dream on the n8ii.... So saying that there are little to no differences between dap audio quality is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

"Gimicky" Tubes are less of a Gimmick then Dual Dacs, and I wouldn't even call that a Gimmick, but Tubes can wayyy change the sound (for better or worse, depends]

Because with a 30,000 hour lifetime, if you listened to music through the player for 8 hours a day, non-stop with tube mode engaged, you'd get over 10 years of listening time, so it's arguably unnecessary.

Does it work as a Roon endpoint?

Using the Roon APK in Android, it doesn't output bit-perfect. I had to use it hooked up to USB as a DAC to do that. This may change in the future at some point, depending on Roon.
