Chris French is here demonstrating how to teach pitching with the High 5 Drill.
Here we are at Zone Sports Academy, I'm Coach Duke, and this is Coach Chris Franchen. We got a question asked the other day, there's a coach that has a bunch of his players at eight years old, and they're getting around the baseball, and what that means is, their hands are getting to the side of the baseball when they're throwing it. So, they're getting around it and throwing it, and not getting behind the baseball.
So, Chris is gonna give us a good drill to help those coaches out there that have kids getting around the ball, and how to get behind the ball, get out in front. So, Coach Chris, what's a good drill for that?
So, a good drill for that is, why I say also like Duke was saying, a lot of times kids come around the ball like this, or sometimes kids let go of the ball ... just like that. So, one good thing to do, I call you high-five drill. You have a coach, a parent, mom or dad, or anything like that, kid gets on the mound, you want the coach probably standing around where Duke's at, right here. And what you're gonna do, stick up high-five. The whole point of this is the pitcher wants to give the person a high-five ... just like that. This is where you wanna be. It's nice and straight, as long as you let go of the ball properly, that ball will go right down the middle, giving you the best velocity and location.
Let's do that a couple times. So, he's gonna have the baseball, he's gonna show, he's gonna come back ...
Right there.
... high-five, it's also getting us out in front, is getting us right here, that's good location. Now, if they're going like this, this is incorrect. If their hand cuts, they're gonna miss the ... They're gonna miss the high-five. So, I'm just ... placing ... Super, simple drill, don't get too crazy with it, yes, we're not talking about different arm slots and glove side, and all that stuff. This is just a simple way to prevent kids from casting out, and getting out in front.
