A very unique and iconic xenotype, Highmates are not just a type of modified xenohuman, but an actual career opportunity on certain planets. #aliens #rimworld #lore

ah yes, the xenotype that is either non existent in the playthroughs or appears once to form a bond with best colonist to then die or disappear somehow

Rescued a Highmate from the ancient danger in my current colony. She got with one of my original colonists, had a baby, then cheated on him with another of my original colonists. Now the half-siblings are running amok while she cooks all day and occasionally helps with research.

Fun fact: Novaroma is one the placed that can be mentioned in the randomly generated descriptions given to Ideologions. They don't call it a planet or a nation, but a planetoid.
@thenightarchives41484 күн бұрын
That's an actual interesting fact! Do you have any sources or quotes for that? I'd like to mention it in a future video about Rimworld named locations :)
@DSlyde4 күн бұрын
@@thenightarchives4148 you can see it if you randomly generate enough ideoligions, but the information fragments that they generate the descriptions from are defined in a file called something like "place.xml" in the Ideology install files somewhere. I can't look at the files Rn but if you can't find it let me know and I'll look when I get home. I think the wiki lore page also has the info?

@@thenightarchives4148 I swear I replied to this, but YT seems to have lost it. You can see it if you generate enough ideoligion descriptions, but the information fragments that they build the comments out of are also saved somewhere in the Ideology install directory in a file called something like "places.xml". I can't remember off hand exactly where, but if you can't find it, let me know and I'll look at it when I can get back to my computer. I think the wiki also has a copy of all the info on their lore page.

i think a psycasting from a lore perspective would be a cool video maybe even goin to psyonic related topics like the garulant trees and its dryads, the archotechs and darkotechs of anomaly and its obelisk and the misterious tree in my map that psycically complains that i build my house too close to it

That's not really how I perceive highmates. The lore description for them also contradicts how they function. You assume that they are sort of sex slaves, and that they are exploited, however both of that is very unlikely given how the psychic bond functions in the game. Imagine paying for an escort, and after the night you spent together you're bonded for life, and you basically suffer withdrawal when far from her.. wouldn't make sense. Also, making them incapable of violence seems to be a consequence of their psychic abilities, and likely very strong empathy. Not to make them exploitable in a relationship. The constant psychic bond with their partner also implies that they their thoughts and feelings are also somewhat shared. And leaving their partner leaves both of them in a horrible state, so you wouldn't want to abuse and chase away a highmate partner. Also, highmates are extremely charismatic, succeeding on first romance attempt, implying that it is them who choose their partners, and that their power is within their control, rather than something that is used against them.
@EighmyLupin4 күн бұрын
The psychic bond is to control them. You can't betrtay your master if you are psychically bound to them. They only succeeded in their first attempt because of the psychic stuff. They are custom made and then shipped to their new owner and forced to make a pass at them and thus bind them to the person who had them build. The lore makes all of this clear.
@thenightarchives41484 күн бұрын
That's a positive way to perceive them. You could be right about all of this, but if a highmate was incapable of violence due to empathic reasons, they shouldn't have a problem fighting mechanoids, undead skeletons or creatures that otherwise cannot feel pain/have no emotions. Plus, the feelings and thoughts are not shared. The psychic bond is based 100% just on proximity. If a highmate is kept as a prisoner or as a slave, that won't affect its partner's mood, they will be happy regardless of their partner's situation as long as they are in close proximity.
@Marqan23 сағат бұрын
@@EighmyLupin But the psychic bond doesn't control them. Not more than they control their partner. Any psychic ability that controls, if that's what you mean, the Highmates would be able to use it just as well. The bond is two-sided, not just one, since both parties suffer from separation. This would be like a mutual kill-switch, kinda like you see in some sci-fi prison transports. The fact that they can instantly bond with someone would make them very dangerous. Your last line is kinda what I said as well: the lore is very disconnected from their in-game abilities.
@Marqan22 сағат бұрын
@@thenightarchives4148 Good point about mechs and zombies. But that seems to be more because of in-game limitations. Like you can just attack grass with a granade, but then it can still blow up humans. Not to mention heavier weapons. Also, Highmates can make weapons, so it's not a complete opposition to violence. For example if they can make weapons, could they set a trap? As far as I know they can do that in-game. Or could they still poison someone (lore-wise)? It's probably not as simple as I said with the psychic bond, but it's also not as absolute as being completely helpless, especially in case of an absuive lover. Furthermore the abusive partner part doesn't make sense to me, since the psychic bond instantly increases the partner's opinion of the highmate. Plus Highmates are delicate, so they would make a terrible punching bag. Yeah, the close proximity is enough, but realistically difficult to maintain, and possibly dangerous. I mean overall highmates seem extremely high maintenance and risky just to have a lover/sex slave. I can get behind them being the perfect mate, but I have a hard time imagining them in a malicious/forced servitude. I'm not saying my version is 100% the correct one, but there are definitely contradictions between lore and in-game.

Having one in your colony can be incredibly useful. They can boost everyone's moods and their good social makes them really good moral guides for ideologies and very good negotiators when trading. You can also pair them with pawns that have the pessimist trait to counter that.

What I think about Highmates? ONE in a colony of 10 baseliners is enough😅... It's kind of sad 😢 to hear that Highmates are incapable of violent thoughts , even not capable of defending themselves😢. I am experimenting with a large colony, there the Leader & a Hero: Simply nicknamed "Benji" (short of "Benjamin", a friend of mine) has a Highmate. And 😅 he has to take this Lady Highmate everywhere, and when the caravan is ambushed, she's a burden.😮 Who would've thought that the perfect companion and Benji's Toy is just THAT, a companion and a Toy. If Benji's Wife would be a baseliner😅, she could: 1. Not go every time with Benji😂😂 2. When caravan is ambushed (107% visibility because I like to go with a BANG!) a baseliner could defend herself, but a Highmate could not. 3. Would be "My Pet" instead of "My Burden"..... If you get THAT reference 😂 you're a man of culture. Also, did you know you can play as Royals? And their names? In Ideology creationn screen, Royal's culture is "Sophist", meaning... "Wisdom-ist" wow 😮😂 THANK YOU SO MUCH !!

a charitable read of Rimworld child highmates is that they are raised to LATER be partners. in game mechanics they can't be in a relationship until they are adults and you could read that as the mental bond and other design features dont mature until the highmate themselves is mature. its still messed up to specifically set that kids entire life path but at least it isnt ...ya know...stuff
