Friends, a couple years ago, there was a poll conducted in Great Britain that revealed that the majority of people there feel that Jesus was not a real, historical figure, but rather more of a mythic character. There are all kinds of spiritual systems that trade in mythic language bearing spiritual truths-but that’s not what Christianity is.

The rule of allegorical interpretation is that if it does not make sense or if it contradicts science or reality, it must be interpreted allegorically, as in Genesis creation. Jesus' resurrection does not make sense and contradicts science, so the resurrection must be allegorical or a symbolic resurrection, not a literal one. This points out, that although Christ may be historical, he sure is not divine. 🙂

But Greg , yes there was an Historical Jesus , but him walking on water like a ghost and feeding 5000 people with 5 loaves and 2 fish and ascending into heaven from the mount of olives are all mythical elements . If Christ literally ascended into heaven and travelled at the Speed of light , he would still be somewhere in our Milky way galaxy. Our milky way galaxy is 100,000 light years across ( 186,000 multiplied by 60 and 60 again and then by 24 and then by 365 and then by 100,000 and only then equals the miles. Luke thought heaven was just above the Clouds and God was there seated on a throne and surrounded by a myriad of angels. There are at least 200,000 galaxies with 100's of millions of stars in each galaxy . The silence of those empty places leaves little room for god.

@@russellmiles2861 Russell, I will not debate you, because I know I won't be able to change your mind, but I will let you know, if the story of Jesus is not historical, it is a tragic story of wishful thinking, and hoping for something beautiful, to relieve human suffering, and justify human existence, in spite of all of the evil we face. The Bible SAYS about the RESURRECTION of Christ in 1 Corinthians:12-19 "But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied." Here THE BIBLE testifies about THE BIBLE, that if an aspect of the account of Jesus as written in the New Testament is NOT historically accurate, then it is vain and useless to have anything to do with Jesus. That if this WASN'T historical, then it's not worth THINKING about. The BIBLE clearly states about itself, that it is accurate, BUT that if it's not, then leave it alone, because if you believe it is, you are to be pitied. The accounts of Jesus were not meant to be a mere story of God's love for us. If they were, they fail miserably, because they don't paint a picture of God's love for us. They paint a picture of a Man, Who WAS God, Who walked among us, and Who made strict, and heavy demands of those Who followed Him, Who told them that He was more worth following and trusting than their families, their parents, their wives, their children. He told them they ought to be prepared to DIE some day if they want to be His disciples. He made the conditions to be His disciple COMPLETE AND UNCONDITIONAL DEVOTION TO HIM AND HIM ALONE. And then He died for us, and rose from the dead to prove that He is worth that devotion. If you think the story of Christ is just a powerful parable of God's love for us, you haven't read your Bible, old man. As I said, I'm not here to debate per-se. You don't even have to read this comment. You won't change my mind, I won't change yours. We'll both find out who's right in the end I suppose :) God give you peace today, friend!

If I'm being honest, of the two of us, I see only myself as having any open mind. I'm looking for evidence of a god, I believe it is possible that one is out there, just haven't found any evidence of his existence. I get the feeling from you though, that you think it's impossible that there is no god. That's closed minded. Where I try to follow the evidence, wherever it might lead. it sounds like you have your mind made up and pick and choose what to listen to as long as it already fits your preconceived notions. Platitudes are entirely unhelpful. 'open your heart' doesn't really tell me anything, unless you referring to surgery of some kind. I realize that's a bit pedantic, but I'm trying to understand, and phrases like that frustrate me more than anything because they don't tell me anything of substance. Can I politely suggest you take a look at some of Bishop Barron's other YT talks on this e.g. Violence in the Bible which demonstrates how the Bible should be read i.e. as the Early Church Fathers ( Ireneus, Augustine etc.) did. I also recommend reading a solid text on Biblical Archaeology which would provide an evidential prop to many of the events in the Bible. Crucifixion, by the way, was invented by the Persians but co-opted by the Romans against the Christians. A mere two crucifixion artefacts have survived. I take no issue with accepting that some of the events may have taken place in history. How exactly can archaeology demonstrate the existence of magic? Stories morph and grow, especially when told via word of mouth, they get embellished constantly sometimes consciously sometimes subconsciously. I've had mundane stories told about me that haver veered away from fact in as short as a couple days. I'll take a look at what your suggesting, just trying to be clear on where I'm starting from. And what specifically do you mean by reading a 'solid text'? Not sure what you're getting at with the history of crucifixion. Or the Tom Holland book. I haven't yet gotten to it myself, but a buddy read it. Said it had more to do with like portraits of those key to Christian history, but I don't think I said anything about the history of Christianity. I can imagine, other by distraction, how stories like that might answer my issues about Christ himself. I appreciate the effort, but I think my level of evidence needed to accept something is just higher. That's not an insult, I can't get myself to accept something so lacking in evidence, based solely on someone's say so, especially when that they're saying includes never before or since mentionings of magical events. My mind just doesn't work that way.

Starting with The Creed, as now part-way into Catholicism, I can now easily understand your phenomenal popularity. My late mom used to say "Behave in such a way so as not to embarrass Christ, if you're calling yourself a Christian." Bishop Barron definitely fulfills this. And speaking of Historicity: In 1961 a team of Italian archeologists from Milan were excavating at Caesarea. For the third year they were concentrating on an Ancient theatre. They found a limestone block 32 inches high, 27 inches wide, and 8 inches thick. It had an inscription of Pontius Pilate. A battered stone naming Pontius Pilate may not seem especially important at first, but this is the only one. No other inscription or document written in the first century AD actually mentions him. This is the only contemporary evidence for the existence of Pontius Pilate

The frustration felt by those who believe in the life and death of Jesus is real, when one lives with the love and care of Jesus, His mother and father Joseph we want to share with those around us. You have been blessed with a beautiful gift from God, your ability to bring Jesus words to a world that so desperately needs His presence among us. This is it. And it it's been going on ever since: When Henry VIII. was King of England, Sir Thomas More was the truly important person, when Adolf Hitler ruled over Germany, it was a priest called Maximilian Kolbe who defined what true power is. Since a bunch of slaves having been freed from Egypt it was always God's breaking into history that turned it upside down. We tend to forget about this explosive intrusion. Thank you so much. My prayers are with you.

Bishop Barron, after my prayers tonight, it occurred to me that my underachieving life has been the product of following my will. And, as you've said many times, our "ego-drama" is boring and unfulfilling, that's for sure. In saying the 'Our Father', I'm always careful to say these words with meaning, especially, "Thy will be done". I'm kind of lost in life. Not sure what to do next. But, I'm now certain, the better Way has to be following God's will. How do I do this? I'm listening all the time, praying for direction. But, I wake up to the same, directionless life. How do I fulfill God's will? Thank you for opening my heart.

@@the-outsider8458 How does the historicity of Jesus compare to the historicity of Cesar Or Hammurabi? Are you more or less convinced of historical evidence of those other fellows? Answer this first then we’ll move on
@the-outsider8458
@the-outsider8458 2 жыл бұрын
@@wickedhenderson4497 yeah sure, no problem. Let me start by saying I'm nowhere near a history buff, Maths was always my preferred subject. If memory serves, Cesar has sources from confederates and opponents alike. Do I believe everything written about him? No, I think we have a general outline of his life and that's probably as close a we're going to be able to get. Hammurabi was what, almost 4,000 yrs ago? I can't say whether he existed, the Hammurabi code was supposedly his, but with the lack of technology and sources combined with an excessive time span, makes accepting anything more than the basics difficult, actually makes accepting even the basics tentative at best. I would say the historicity of Jesus would be somewhat comparable to that of Cesar, except there are even fewer sources and his story includes magic. Same reason people don't accept Merlin and King Arthur as fact.

Throughout and over history, man has often replaced reality with appearance. It certainly is the case currently in this post-modernist era. God has a « grab-you-by-the-lapel » effect as an historian as He refocuses us from appearance to reality such that those who appear in human history as powerful, in reality « shake in their boots » as Bishop Barron aptly points out. It is not sacred scripture that you want to make part of your daily life, it is God. Scripture is a means to an end, not an end. By all means use that means, but the end is the important thing. It is not knowledge about God that counts, it is knowledge of and a real relationship to the real God that God wants for me and for you.

For a person living in a modern scientific world it does not sound like history about an Angel appearing to an old priest who was sterile promising him a child. Another story about an angel called Gabriel appearing to a young virgin , who remained a virgin , but was told she was going to give birth to a king. Another story about an angel appearing to shepherds in a field about this miraculous birth and a host of angels suddenly appearing confirming this message and then disappearing into a mythical heaven. It is nearly impossible for an intelligent and educated person believing in beings like angels just floating around delivering messages from another dimension and claiming it is authentic history from an author who claimed to have interviewed eye witnesses of events 80 years earlier. It does sound like myth sprinkled with a little history to give the story some credence to superstitious people who believed the earth was flat.
