oh my god you explained what pi is, the ratio of circumference to diameter, in like 5 seconds was and my mind was blown, they never told us what it actually was in school, they were just like “magic number !”
@iamyaniii_3637
@iamyaniii_3637 3 жыл бұрын
Wow! This is truly fascinating. I realized during the first part that school never really explained what pi is. It's just this number you multiply to the radius or diameter to get the circumference. And I was surprised I never even questioned how we got the number for pi or what it does to the circle. And this video absolutely blew my mind... Thank you

When kyne said that circles are everywhere, I looked at a pepsi bottle next to me and wondered, why are bottles round? Why not cubed and rectangular?
@paulboard8221

Circles have the most volume per surface area so a cylinder minimizes the plastic used while being easier to store and manufacture than a sphere

Sharp edges are points where stress can concentrate, so cube shaped bottles would be much more fragile than round ones. That is also why plane windows don't have sharp corners.

Kyne, these are so beautiful! Thank you so much, because the whole world needs these. ALSO - look into Pope Sylvester II. He was a mathematician and scientist who brought Arabic numerals and zero to Western Europe in the Middle Ages. I recommend a book called "The Abacus and the Cross." Just the introduction and first chapter offer tons of information. Cheers!

Ahhh man, I don't even know what to say. As someone who's very much interested in math, I have always had this thought in mind. Contrapoints... but with math? Like it sounds pretty fucking crazy and I didn't pay that it much attention as I thought "well... this is just what happens when a whole generation is raised high on contrapoints and drunk on philosophy tube" but still... I really wanted it. And whoa... would you look at this. I mean this video is not necessarily a perfect, I feel like showing the calculations and messy diagrams on screen can be overwhelming for some people. I think having a computer software to sort of zoom in on the important parts might have been better (of course, I'm not saying Kyne's video is terrible, I think she's amazing and I do understand this is her first big video like this. I'm just giving my very important and rational 2 AM critiques.) But yeah, I do want more videos like this on math. I'm pretty sure as time goes on, these videos will just get better (even contrapoint's earlier videos (the ones she has deleted) aren't that good comparatively) but also... I'm pretty sure kyne isn't going to make more videos like this (maybe she will??? Idk, gonna post it on twitter soon, maybe kyne will respond). It's quite an unexplored territory. I remember searching about "math and theatrics" a while back and pretty much nothing came up. So yeah, I do get why kyne wouldn't, but I do want her to... If I have to guess, I'll say kyne won't just because the established audience doesn't really seem to like it very much. Yeah sure, kyne gets alot of support from these comments but it's still VERY little compared to the other videos. So yeah. I get it. I don't how to end this comment, so just gonna stop right there.

I don't think it is absolutely certain that "Pi, but replace every with a 7" is irrational. Imagine that, at some point after a gazillion digits, Pi just ended up looking like ...131603474474447447474444774777444474774744747... , with no digit but 4 and 7 ever occuring again. That would not contradict its irrationality, but if you replace all the 4s by 7s in this case, you would get a repeating 7, so you would get a rational number. Of course, the probability of something like this actually being true is literally 0, but it's not impossible.

12:50 - the "and vice versa" bit isn't true. Example: tan(π/3) = sqrt(3). In fact, since the irrationals are uncountable, and since the tangent function is injective in the interval (-π/2, π/2), and maps onto the whole of R, there are uncountably many examples of irrational numbers that map to irrational numbers.
