Great Big Story

Күн бұрын

Budapest’s Dohány Street Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe, easily accommodating 3,000 worshippers. Beyond being a monumental architectural gem known for its distinctive Moorish Revival design, the place of worship also offers a lesson in survival. Built in the 1850s, the Dohány Street Synagogue endured Nazi occupation and heavy damage inflicted by bombings during World War II. Today, it’s a place of beauty and solace, where hope and resilience are felt.

At 0:43 all the way to the right just below the dome is the Holocaust Tree of Life. It's a metal weeping willow with tens of thousands of leaves...the name of a victim of the holocaust is inscribed on each. Really stunning memorial indeed.

@@air2091 yes true. In Jerusalem (my hometown) we have 2-4 beautiful synagogues but not even close to the churches around them. I wish our religion had a gothic architecture base. Maybe one day🤞🏰

Se·mit·ic /səˈmidik/ adjective adjective: Semitic 1. relating to or denoting a family of languages that includes Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic and certain ancient languages such as Phoenician and Akkadian, constituting the main subgroup of the Afro-Asiatic family. 2. relating to the peoples who speak the Semitic languages, especially Hebrew and Arabic.

@sonnegates 1654 but... all words are made up. Literally every word in every language that has ever existed and will ever exist, is made up. Someone coined it and eventually, it was added to the dictionary. What's your problem with the word "semitic"?
@OverdaleRd
@OverdaleRd 5 жыл бұрын
@ sommegates 1654 It's also used by linguists to refer to a group of languages that share similar syntax and grammar. And it's completely different than Columbus calling Native Americans "Indians", because the word "semitic" is not use to classify people in the same way. No one goes up to a person who speaks a semitic language and calls them a "Semitic", nor is the word used to classify people who live in a particular area, as the word "Indian" is. As someone who has grown up speaking a semitic language, I don't understand your argument.
@OverdaleRd
@OverdaleRd 5 жыл бұрын
@sommegates 1654 Semitic, Anti-Semitic and Antisemitic are three different words. The first, I have already discussed. The second word is often incorrectly used to refer to discrimination against Jewish people. Rather, the term actually refers to discrimination against any person who speaks a Semitic language (Hebrew, Arabic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Aramaic and Tigre, among others). Hence the hyphen, which signifies that the word "anti-semitic" is an amalgamation of two words. Antisemitism on the other hand, was developed in 1879 by Wilhelm Marr in order to try to validate and justify hatred against Jewish people.

I've been there last summer. All I can say is that the Great Synagogue is worthy of the title. I've been to many synagogues in my lifetime, both for religious and tourist purposes, but so far this one is my favourite.

I was there too to see it. But unfortunately, I could not enter without the small head. I did not know. Otherwise, I would have taken a regular cap. The reason I cannot wear the Jewish cap is because I do not associate myself with practises of other religions than christianity. If I am in a buddhist temple, I will not bow down. But I am still welcome there... a pity I could not enter the synagogue as they charge crazy for it..
