(subtitles in all major languages!!)
Pedestrians walking by it say they feel an aura of foreboding,
yet the Dakota Building is an iconic landmark that has become
one of the most sought after private residences in New York City.
Excerpts from the presentation:
(1) The building’s original owner,
Edward Clark, was an avid spiritualist,
and would often host séances in the
Dakota to communicate with the dead.
Over the passages of decades some of the
former residents and the séance invited dead,
have chosen the Dakota as
THE place to be seen....sometimes.
(2) …..she was the property manager of
the Dakota from the ’30s to the ’50s.
Elise suffered a tremendous amount
of grief while residing at the Dakota
after her young son was killed by a
passing truck right outside the building.
The Dakota was the last place
Elise saw her son alive, and even after
her own death she still cries for him,
searching the halls in vain.

“The cries of the dead are terrible indeed; you should try not to hear them.” ― Philip K. Dick, VALIS “Ghosts don't haunt us. That's not how it works. They're present among us because we won't let go of them." "I don't believe in ghosts," I said, faintly. "Some people can't see the color red. That doesn't mean it isn't there," she replied.” ― Sue Grafton, M is for Malice This video is already 2 years old and I hope you will enjoy also my productions after this - as I'm continually honing my skills with this media (on a non-hollywood budget of course) www.patreon.com/ObsoleteOddity

Even as a wee one, I was always drawn to The Dakota. My da told me I’d just automatically walk to it. It’s absolutely breathtaking on the outside. Once I was able, I purchased an apartment in The Dakota and LOVE it. The inside is just as phenomenal as the outside. We visit as often as possible, despite our dislike for New York and my family even stays when we’re in Ireland. They love it as well. I will say though, I’ve not ever seen John Lennon. Perhaps because I’ve not ever been a fan!? I don’t believe it’s cursed in any way shape or form but it definitely has a draw. As for the elevators; every building in New York has that one elevator that is always malfunctioning. You’re welcome to stay anytime, for as long as you wish. Plenty of rooms to accommodate you. ❤️

It’s very interesting that you were drawn to it as a child, I’m very happy that you were able to finalise the attraction by having your own apartment there, how wonderful! How lovely, it must be to stay in such a historic and elegant building.

I've been fascinated with The Dakota since the first time I watched Rosemary's Baby; (roughly thirty years ago)I never knew they actually filmed inside the building, I thought they were only allowed to take shots of the exterior and the courtyard. I wish I could explore just one apartment in its original state.. thanks for this Oddie❤

I visited NYC for the first time in 2022. I made it a point to walk through Central Park and visit the Dakota. I also love Rosemary's Baby and I my heart skipped a beat when I saw the building from the park. I was able to sneak a peek at the courtyard and the fountain is still there. The building is also featured in another one of my favorite movies, Vanilla Sky. The history of the Dakota has always fascinated me and I was so happy to have seen it in person. 😊

Having never lived in anything but a private house and loving historical buildings, I loved visiting the Dakota in New York as it once was. Are visions and emotional exhibits left from those who once lived there, or are they from current people's own emotional impact of those who lived previously? Many people recall the announcement of the terrible shooting of John Lennon. The former first lady of the USA passed away in the apartment she owned in the Dakota. A building standing over a century must have so much history and stories of past owners who make it home.

I love your videos they are well researched and interesting and your attention to detail is excellent. But the photo of the building that you show at two minutes and 38 seconds was a building named the Spanish Flats that was demolished. My experiences at the Dakota goes like this, I had a Great Aunt who had an apartment there and the elevators are powered by water pumps. My great aunt had an apartment close to where Lauren Bacall lived and when I would visit I would sometimes see her but when I was young I didn't know who she was yet but as I got older I would nod and smile and leave it at that. When I would visit sometimes with my grandmother who was my great aunt's younger sister we sometimes would hear strange sounds that had no explanation but my great aunt took it in her stride but it would scare me terribly. But when my great aunt passed away in 1982 that was my last time visiting the Dakota when I was in her apartment for the last time I felt uneasy and when I could make an excuse to leave I did never to return. Its a magnificent building but I would have second thoughts about entering again.

Another great feature, Oddie. I have walked by this building so many times and have always gotten an eerie sensation. However, I must confess that when I’m in the UWS, I always walk by it. It does indeed have a strange fascinating aura.

Thank you so much for this very interesting video about the Dakota ,I had seen some indoor photography from Yoko Onos apartment . Seeing the beautiful building from out side, I thought to myself how nice NY would be if they had kept the old fashioned design. Built out instead of up ,there was plenty of land back then. Mrs Yoko has added so much huge furnishings to her rooms. It makes you wonder how big the elevators are if they can get massive pianos or heavy columns of marble up to the top floor ,maybe enough to fray some of those cables spoken of ?

Very glad you enjoyed it, thank you! I’m not sure if the windows can open wide, I remember working for a decorators company back in the 80s, and we would bring up large items by crane through the windows.

I had the extraordinary luck to have attended the 1st birthday of Leonard Bernstein’s granddaughter. I entered the building with a sense of awe and tried to take everything in. The Maestro’s apartment was huge , with balloons in every single room. My only moment of fear came as my daughter, just a bit older than the birthday girl, sat herself at Lennie’s Baldwin grand piano and started banging her little plastic dinosaur over the keyboard. It was at that moment that I realized that “Lennie” was standing behind me, appreciating my discomfiture at my daughter’s “performance”. At least she didn’t go into the room with a magnificent 18th century double keyboard harpsichord! If only I had seen a ghost, but spending a lovely afternoon in Leonard Bernstein’s apartment was almost as surreal as seeing someone from the 19th century walk through the massive walls.

This has to be one of the most fascinating buildings in the world. Yes it draws you in like a magnet. Would love to see inside but I know that will unfortunately never happen. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was only the outside shots of the dakota that was used in Rosemary's baby, not the apartments as filliming is not normally allowed in the building. Great video
